1 students will be promoted to the High on time Issue 4 Assistant Teacher Spotlight This week s Teacher Spotlight is focused on Mrs. Carol Henry, our newest collaborative SPED teacher. This dedicated teacher, who decided in second grade that she wanted to be a teacher, has taught everything from kindergartners to seniors in high school in both regular and special education classrooms. Her earliest teaching experience came as working as a substitute teacher throughout her college years. After graduating from the University of Alabama, she began teaching first grade in Alabama. She has also taught in Louisiana, all three regions of Tennessee, and for the past fifteen years here in Georgia. Ms. Henry holds a Bachelors of Art Degree from the University of Alabama, a Masters of Education from the University of Memphis and an Education Specialist Degree from Piedmont College. Ms. Henry continues to love the field of education and even loves the challenge of the new technology which enters the picture almost daily. However, she shares that her greatest reward and the reason she continues to teach is experience of the excitement she feels when the light comes on for students as they discover and learn new concepts. This is Mrs. Henry s first year at. When asked how she feels about working at the school, she replied I am truly enjoying being a part of the faculty at SMS and look forward to many rewarding years in the future. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Assistant This week's Student Spotlight recognizes Martin Nunez-Mendez, a 7th grade student on the Geisz, Tate, Nash, Martineau, Henry team. Martin is a hard-worker who always shows enthusiasm for learning and a willingness to try new things. He is extremely respectful to his teachers who share that he is always engaged in his class assignments, always puts forth extra effort, and never refuses to accept a challenge. His fellow students like and appreciate Martin because he is quick to help others in any way that he can. They also note that it is hard to not notice Martin when passing him in the hallway because he is always smiling. Martin says that he is proud to be a Sweetwater Saint and is looking forward to an exciting school year on the best team in 7th grade! Anti-Bullying Saints Club Have you ever noticed someone being bullied? Have you been in a situation when you wanted to stop a bully, but didn t want to be bullied for getting involved? Have you ever been bullied yourself? Well, stop worrying about bullies and come join the Anti-Bullying Saints Club! This club is for any and every one: kids who have been bullied, kids who have seen bullying, and/or kids who are just sick and tired of bullies PERIOD!! If you would like to join our club, please contact Mr. Tomlinson, Mrs. Armstrong, or Mrs. Beach. The Anti-bullying Club meetings will take place every Tuesday, after school, from 4:30 to 5:30 PM, in Mr. Tomlinson s classroom. Let s all come together and get rid of all the bullies! WELCOME! 2 Los estudiantes de serán promovidos a la preparatoria a tiempo Volumen 4 Assistant Assistant Maestro destacado Esta semana nos enfocamos en la Sra. Carol Henry, una de las maestras más nuevas en el departamento colaborativo de SPED. Esta dedicada maestra, quien decidió que quería ser maestra cuando cursaba el segundo año de escuela primaria, ha enseñado desde kínder hasta 12 grado, tanto en educación regular como en educación especial. Su primera experiencia enseñando vino de trabajar como maestra sustituta mientras asistía a la universidad. Después de graduarse de la Universidad de Alababa comenzó a enseñar primer grado en Alabama. También enseñó en Luisiana, en las tres regiones de Tennessee y los últimos quince años aquí en Georgia. La Sra. Henry tiene un título académico de Bachelor of Arts (Licenciatura en Filosofía y Letras.) de la Universidad de Alabama, una maestría en Educación de la Universidad de Memphis y un título de Especialista en Educación de la Universidad de Piedmont. Martin es muy trabajador, siempre muestra entusiasmo por aprender y un deseo de experimentar cosas nuevas. Es extremadamente respetuoso con sus maestros, los que comparten que constantemente está comprometido con el trabajo que se le asigna en clase, siempre se esfuerza y nuca se niega a aceptar retos. A sus compañeros les cae muy bien Martin y lo aprecian porque es rápido para ayudar a los demás en lo posible. También mencionan que es difícil no percatarse de Martin cuando pasan al lado de él en el pasillo porque siempre está sonriendo. Martin dice sentirse orgulloso de ser un Sweetwater Saint y espera tener un emocionante año en el mejor grupo de 7 o grado. Club Anti-acoso Ha notado alguna vez que alguien está siendo acosado? 5 students will be promoted to the High on time Issue 4 Assistant Assistant A Message from Our Dear Saints, It is difficult to believe that we are approaching the mid-way point in the first semester of the school year. Our first Teacher Professional Learning/ Planning day is scheduled for next Monday, October 14. This student holiday marks the end of the first 9 weeks for this academic year. As you learned at your student-led conferences in September, our students are counting on your support to ensure that they are able to close this quarter with all of their work completed and turned into their teachers for grading. I am confident that they can depend on your encouragement and assistance as they close out first quarter. Please remember that our teachers continue to offer tutoring in the mornings and Mastery opportunities during the school day to support students who need additional time to be successful. Please encourage your students to take advantage of all of these possibilities to heighten their understanding of the subject matter and improve their grade point averages. As always, our faculty is committed to providing rigorous instruction to engage students and to challenge them to stretch to their full potential. All teachers attend daily collaborative planning sessions to ensure that the instruction in every classroom is designed to meet the individual and group needs of the students they teach. In addition, you will find your child's teachers working in Professional Learning Communities, (PLC's) to enhance their ability to support both teaching and learning. Moreover, teachers are working together to build classrooms that provide for varied activities and maximize the learning environment. Teachers also depend upon parental input which provides insight into student interests which is used to create lessons that will captivate their attention. By using data from daily work, quizzes, projects, and tests, our teachers are able to assess the specific needs of their students. Every teacher creates lessons designed to meet these specific needs as they continue the work of teaching and learning, with an emphasis on learning. Our school is a partnership which includes all stakeholders: parents, students, faculty and community. By working and planning together, we can assure that Sweetwater will be a World Class for the 21st Century; a school committed to honoring the dreams of families who choose us for their children.
