YO- IRREGULAR VERBS This verbs have a yo- form that does not follow the regular pattern. 5 3. STEM- CHANGING IRREGULAR VERBS In Spanish many verbs have an unexpected spelling change when they are conjugated. If you start counting after the ar/er/ir ending, the first vowel suffers a change. empez- ar almorzar encontrar entend- er repetir preferir This irregularity happens in all the forms except nosotros and vosotros. In Quizlet you have a list of verbs that suffer these changes There are three categories of verbs according to the type of change in the stem and "jugar": a) e> ie In all of these verbs the e goes to ie when conjugated, except for the nosotros and vosotros forms EMPEZAR empiezo empiezas empieza empezamos empezáis empiezan MENTIR miento mientes miente mentimos mentís mienten
Common verbs with this e > ie change: cerrar empezar calentar sentir sentarse venir tener mentir despertarse divertirse entender fregar helar merendar perder preferir recomendar sugerir b) e > i In all of these verbs the e goes to i when conjugated, except for the nosotros and vosotros forms REPETIR repito repites repite repetimos repetís repiten SONREIR sonrío sonríes sonríe sonreimos sonreís sonríen Common verbs with this e > i change: decir seguir pedir freir elegir medir reir repetir sonreir vestirse seguir servir
c) o > ue In all of these verbs the o goes to ue when conjugated, except for the nosotros and vosotros forms APROBAR apruebo apruebas aprueba aprobamos aprobáis aprueban MOVER muevo mueves mueve movemos movéis mueven Common verbs with this o > ue change: dormir almorzar acostarse aprobar contar costar volver encontrar llover morir mostrar probar recordar volar soñar remover doler d) u in "jugar" > ue JUGAR juego juegas juega jugamos jugáis juegan
4. REFLEXIVE VERBS A verb is reflexive when the subject and the object are the same. E.g. I wash myself Look how it is different: I: subject wash: verb myself; object I & myself refer to the same person, that who is speakin Yo me lavo (I wash myself) Yo lavo los platos I wash the dishes) Yo lavo al bebé (I wash the baby) When a verb is reflexive, the infinitive ends in "se." lavar lavarse to wash (non-reflexive) to wash oneself (reflexive) How do you conjugate these verbs? 1. Find the form of the verb without the -se 2. Conjugate the verb as always (stem and suitable endings and irregularities if any) 3. Add the following reflexive pronouns: me te se nos os se LEVANTARSE ACOSTARSE IRSE PONERSE (regular) (stem changing) (irregular) (yo-irregular) 1. levantar + se acostar+ se ir + se poner + se 2. (yo) (tú) (él) (nosotros) (vosotros) (ellos) levanto levantas levanta levantamos levantáis levantan acuesto acuestas acuesta acostamos acostáis acuestan voy vas va vamos vais van pongo pones pone ponemos ponéis ponen 3. (yo) (tú) (él) (nosotros) (vosotros) (ellos) me levanto te levantas se levanta nos levantamos os levantáis se levantan me acuesto te acuestas se acuesta nos acostamos os acostáis se acuestan me voy te vas se va nos vamos os váis se van me pongo te pones se pone nos ponemos os ponéis se ponen
COMMON REFLEXIVE VERBS ARE: levantarse ducharse lavarse afeitarse bañarse acostarse (ue) peinarse despertarse (ie) vestirse(i) dormirse (ue) divertirse (ie) irse ponerse (yo irr) quitarse maquillarse aburrirse sentarse to get up to have a shower to wash oneself to shave oneself to have a bath to go to bed to do one's hair, to comb one's hair to wake up to get dressed to fall asleep to have fun to go away, to leave to put on oneself to take off to put on makeup on oneself to get bored to sit down
