4 Environment Temperature SKILL LAB: MANAGER S SHEET Facilitation of Skill Lab: 1. Instruct employees to think about when they are at risk for temperature related illnesses during their job. 2. Have employees work together to brainstorm ways to prevent those illnesses. 3. Have each employee make a checklist of steps to follow to prevent temperature related illnesses. If writing ability is an issue with your employees, have the groups or pairs of employees share the strategies they brainstormed verbally. If they are struggling, prompt them to think back to the video they watched, or replay segments of the video. 4. Review the employees checklist and provide feedback. Take-away Question: Ask the employees the take-away question and 2-3 days later have them answer the question. If they are new employees, wait a week to have them answer the question. Satisfactory Needs Improvement Feedback: Preventing Hot Weather Illnesses Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Wear a hat and long-sleeved shirt to prevent burning. Do not wear shorts on the job in hot weather. Take periodic breaks in a cool, shady location. Watch for early warnings of heat stress, both in yourself and coworkers. Preventing Cold Weather Illnesses Dress appropriately with layers of clothing. Cover as much skin as possible Wear layers of loose fitting clothing. Block the wind with a waterproof or nylon layer. Avoid overdressing to the point of sweating. Wear waterproof and insulated boots. Get out of wet clothes immediately. Avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine in extreme temperatures. Take frequent breaks from the cold.
