More info / Más información: harmen.tjalling.holwerda@sqm.com The PNA website ( was launched in March 2010 and runs in English, Chinese and Spanish. Until now, visits were paid by unique visitors. The 10 countries that generated most visits were responsible for 70% of all visits. It should also be noted that 5 Spanish speaking Latin American countries are ranking in the Top 10 of the visiting countries (Table 1). Table 1. Top 10 of the countries visiting the PNA website. In all 3 languages, a range of pre-selected keywords and short phrases appear in the Sponsored links section on the right side of the Google webpage. The total number of appearances is mainly set by the financial budget spent. The most clicked link in Adwords was Potassium nitrate product features and benefits overview, which appeared to be far out the most important link in all 3 languages (Table 2). In total, this link was clicked times out of a total of clicks, which means 65%. This shows that visitors are actively looking for information on potassium nitrate product characteristics, advantages and benefits. El mayor link seleccionado en Adwords fue Características del producto nitrato de potasio y visión general de los beneficios, el cual resultó ser lejos el link más importante en los 3 idiomas (Cuadro 2). En total, este link fue seleccionado veces de un total de selecciones, lo que significa un 65%. Esto muestra que los visitantes se encuentran buscando activamente la información sobre las características de los productos de nitrato de potasio, sus ventajas y beneficios. More info / Más información: steve.oosthuyse@sqm.com or/o hortres@pixie.co.za From 19 th to 25 th May, Dr Steve Oosthuyse, (EMEA Market Development Manager, SQM Africa) attended the 7 th International Symposium on Mineral Nutrition of Fruit Crops, held in Chanthaburi, Thailand. On behalf of SQM, 3 papers were delivered, which are to be published in Acta Horticulturae, the official proceedings publication Journal of the International Society for Horticultural Sciences (ISHS). Delegates from a wide range of countries attended the symposium which provided the opportunity for scientists, professionals and students with different backgrounds to present their latest findings and discuss their current research, both basic and applied and relating to many aspects of mineral nutrition of fruit crops. Desde el 19 al 25 de mayo, el Dr. Steve Oosthuyse, (Gerente de Desarrollo de Mercado EMEA, SQM África) participó en el Séptimo Congreso Internacional sobre Nutrición Mineral de Cultivos Frutales, llevado a cabo en Chanthaburi, Tailandia. Por parte de SQM se presentaron 3 trabajos, los cuales serán publicados en el Acta Horticulturae, la publicación oficial de la Sociedad Internacional de Ciencias Hortícolas (ISHS). Delegados de una amplia variedad de países asistieron al congreso, el cual brindó la oportunidad a los científicos, profesionales y estudiantes con diferente experiencias, para presentar sus últimos resultados de investigación, tanto básicos como aplicados, e intercambiar información de sus trabajos actuales, en relación a muchos aspectos sobre nutrición mineral de cultivos frutales. Scientific topics of interest included, among others, Nutrient management and cycling in fruit trees, Plant nutrition and climate change, Plant nutrients and fruit quality, Fruit nutrition, bioactive compounds and human health, Foliar nutrition, Interaction and diagnosis of plant nutrient status, Fertiliser application and environmental impacts, Tree fruit physiology and plant growth, and, Fruit breeding for improved mineral nutrient status. From SQM s side, research on Speedfol B SP s benefits over Ulexite in supplying boron to oil palm was presented, as well as research on the benefits of fertigating banana and tomato with solutions where KNO 3 was the K source, as opposed to K 2 SO 4 or KCl. Los temas científicos de interés incluyeron, entre otros, Manejo y reciclado de nutrientes en árboles frutales, Nutrición vegetal y cambios climáticos, Nutrición Vegetal y calidad de la fruta, Nutrición de la fruta, compuestos bioactívos y salud humana, Nutrición foliar, Interacción y diagnóstico del estado de nutrición vegetal, Aplicación de Fertilizantes y el impacto ambiental, Fisiología del árbol frutal y el crecimiento de la planta, y Mejoramiento genético en frutales para optimizar el estado de nutrición vegetal. Por parte de SQM, se presentó la investigación sobre la ventaja de la aplicación de Speedfol B SP a la palma aceitera con respecto a Ulexita como fuente de boro, como también la investigación sobre el beneficio de fertirrigación en bananos y tomate con soluciones donde el KNO 3 fue la fuente de K, en contraposición del K 2 SO 4 o el KCl. 3

4 Events & Marketing Support Eventos y Marketing SQM participated in the 2012 China International Water Soluble Fertilizer Conference and Exhibition SQM participó en la versión 2012 de China International Water Soluble Fertilizer Conference and Exhibition More info / Más información: susan.gu@sqm.com From 3 rd to 5 th July, was held in Beijing, China a new version of the China International Water Soluble Fertilizer Conference and Exhibition, organized by the CNCIC in partnership with New AG International. Over 300 delegates from over 20 countries attended the conference, among which were China, United States of America, Belgium, Netherlands, France and Israel. With SQM as sponsor, the purpose of the conference is to set a good platform for the industry of water soluble fertilizer to communicate and cooperate internationally. Desde el 3 al 5 de Julio recién pasado, se realizó en China una nueva versión de la China International Water Soluble Fertilizer Conference and Exhibition, organizada por la CNCIC en conjunto con New AG International. Más de 300 delegados provenientes de más de 20 países asistieron a la conferencia, entre los que destacaron China, Estados Unidos de America, Bélgica, Países Bajos, Francia e Israel. Con SQM como patrocinador del evento, el objetivo de la conferencia es configurar una buena plataforma para la industria del fertilizante soluble en agua para comunicarse y cooperar a nivel internacional. Experts from different companies related to this industry as SQM, NETAFIM, Akzo Nobel and Haifa, gave their speeches to share their experience in the water soluble fertilizers business. Likewise, teachers from the China Agriculture University and the South China Agriculture University, provided information related to the current market situation, WSNPK development trends, characteristics of the main products and scientific types of application, including three aspects: academic, informative and practical. This conference aims not only to enhance communication and cooperation within the industry, but also highlight the great potential of development in this business. With the combination of extensive practical experience of each of the participating companies and the recognized knowledge of the universities and R&D centers, we look forward for a better soluble fertilizer industry in the world. Expertos de diversas empresas relacionadas a la industria como SQM, NETAFIM, Akzo Nobel y Haifa, dieron sus charlas para compartir su experiencia en el negocio de los fertilizantes solubles en agua. Del mismo modo, profesores de la China Agriculture University y de la South China Agriculture University, entregaron información relacionada a la situación actual del mercado, las tendencias de desarrollo de los WSNPK, las principales características de los productos y formas científicas de aplicación, incluyendo tres aspectos: académico, informativo y práctico. Esta conferencia busca no sólo enriquecer la comunicación y la cooperación dentro de la industria, sino que también poner de manifiesto el gran potencial de desarrollo en este negocio. Con la combinación de la gran experiencia práctica de cada uno de las empresas participantes y la reconocida teoría de las universidades y centros de Investigación y Desarrollo, miramos hacia delante en búsqueda de una mejor industria para los fertilizantes solubles alrededor del mundo. 4

More info / Más información: rafael.sepulveda@sqm.com Early June, Soquimich Comercial rolled out Ultrasol ONE, its new product line of intelligent nutritional solutions for fertirrigation, backed up by a full cycle of technical-commercial meetings with distributors, clients and consultants in order to spread the multiple benefits of this new SPN line. The launch was well received by the market, not at least because Ultrasol ONE facilitates the operational handling of fertilisers and ensures well-balanced nutrition, a prerequisite for quality fruit growing. The Ultrasol ONE product line saw the light in the context of a Chilean fruit export situation which is increasingly confronted with rigorous controls of its production processes, which has imposed new quality demands on the providers of agricultural inputs, especially in terms of the harmless and safe handling of raw materials. This new group of soluble formulas for fertirrigation offers a definitive solution for the storage and transportation limitations of fertilisers, while at the same time, provides a nutritional option for the application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. SQM VITAS Perú Organizó una Fascinante y Estimulante Gira al Salar de Atacama. As part of the fidelity programme for their key account customers, SQM VITAS Peru invited consultants, technicians and sales reps of the leading companies and associations of the Peruvian palm oil industry to visit SQM s facilities at the Salar de Atacama (Figure 1) and María Elena. The main purpose of this visit was to familiarize these customers particularly with SQM s MOP-G production (Figure 2) and to show them the high quality production standards of this product. Como parte de su programa de fidelización a sus principales clientes, SQM VITAS Perú invitó a los asesores, técnicos y responsables de compra de las principales empresas y asociaciones de palma aceitera del Perú a las instalaciones de SQM, al Salar de Atacama (Figura 1) y María Elena. La visita tuvo como objetivo mostrar a nuestros clientes el proceso productivo de SQM enfocado en MOP-G (Figura 2) y mostrar los altos estándares de calidad que se manejan en la fabricación de este producto. As such, this tour enabled to show SQM s entire production process and logistics flow from the extraction to the loading of the products. All the invited companies and associations represented more than 50% of the total Peruvian palm market ( hectares). The market for oil palm has an important growth potential since the unmet domestic demand for oil is around 70%. According to the participants, the Horticultural Crops Technical Tour Peru 2012 was an overall success in terms of the treated subjects, the organization, and, the high quality of the exhibitors. As is the case with all species of its genus, the oil palm has a high, single trunk. Its name is derived from the Greek word eleia which means olive (referring to its fruits which are rich in oil) and guineensis which reminds us of its country of origin, the Republic of Guinea. The inflorescences develop in the axils of the leaves, which are large and of the pinnately compound type, with lance-shaped leaflets emerging from the rachis, along two regular levels. The oil palm is a perennial plant that can become more than 100 years old in the wild, but when cultivated, it is only allowed to grow for 25 years when it reaches 12 metres of height. In the wild, oil palms can exceed 40 metres of height. Sobre la Palma Aceitera Elaeis guineensis, comúnmente llamada palma africana de aceite o palma aceitera, es una especie del género Elaeis. Como todas las especies de su género posee un tronco alto y único. Su nombre deriva del griego eleia, que significa oliva (por sus frutos ricos en aceite) y guineensis, por la procedencia de origen, la República de Guinea. Las inflorescencias se producen en las axilas de las hojas, éstas son grandes y de tipo pinnado compuesto, con folíolos que parten desde el raquis sobre dos planos regulares. Los folíolos son lanceolados. Es una planta perenne, alcanzando más de 100 años, pero bajo cultivo solo se le permite llegar hasta los 25 años, que es cuando alcanza los 12 metros de altura. En estado natural llega a superar los 40 metros. The fruits are grouped in a drupe, an indehiscent fruit, covered with a waxy tissue called exocarp, a pulp called mesocarp and a hard, round structure, inside of which houses a kernel, called endocarp, which protects the seed. The fruits produced by the oil palm are normal, but sometimes white fruits occur which do not contain oil or a kernel. When cultivated, the oil palm starts to bear fruits after 2,5 years post planting, often using nursery palms of 12 months old which reach their maximum production between 20 and 30 years. Around years ago, the natives of Western Equatorial Africa already extracted oil from its fruit bunches. Today, the main producers of palm oil are Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria and Colombia. This oil is obtained by cooking the fleshy part after it has been crushed and is a basic ingredient in the kitchen, aside from being highly appreciated in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and ultimately as raw material to produce biodiesel.
