2 By Rev. Bruce Lewandowski Fast Give Prepare Pray I ll never forget the look on the deacon s face when I asked him where to buy the palms for Palm Sunday. I was in the Caribbean, my first Lent on the island of St. Lucia, surrounded by palm trees, and asking where do we get the palms. Smiling, he said, We don t buy palms here Father. Everyone grows their own. I remember the ashes there were really white. It seemed strange to me, but not to the black people who filled the pews. The ash crosses shone brightly on their dark foreheads. And there was Calvary hill with the slow, steep climb beginning at 5:00am. People knelt on the rough, rocky road of each station as the Good Friday way of the cross was called out. Codfish cakes were sold afterwards, to be taken home to break the fast. Do you remember Lent and Holy Week in your home country? Or have you ever experienced Lent and Holy Week in another country? Do you remember the songs and prayers, the food and the traditions? This Lent, share stories of your Lenten experiences with family and friends, and as you do, think about your practices today. Pray, fast and help others. Repent. Through our Lenten practices past and present we can be transformed. We can become what we celebrate, a living memory of Jesus Christ s suffering, death, and resurrection. Cuaresma Ayune Dé Prepárese Ore Por Rev. Bruce Lewandowski Nunca olvidaré la mirada de la cara del diácono cuando le pregunté dónde comprar las palmas para el Domingo de Ramos. Yo estaba en el Caribe, mi primera cuaresma en la isla de Santa Lucía, rodeado de palmeras y preguntando de dónde sacamos las palmas? Sonriendo, dijo, «no compramos palmas aquí padre; cada uno cultiva sus propias». Yo recuerdo que las cenizas allí eran blanquísimas. Me pareció extraño, pero no a las personas de raza negra que llenaron las bancas. Las cruces de ceniza brillaban en sus oscuras frentes. Y había el monte Calvario con la subida lenta y escarpada que comienza a las 5:00 de la mañana. La gente se arrodilló en el camino áspero y rocoso mientras rezaba cada estación del Viacrucis del Viernes Santo. Después vendieron bacalao, con el fin de llevarlo a casa para romper el ayuno. Recuerda la cuaresma y Semana Santa en su país de origen? O ha experimentado la cuaresma y Semana Santa en otro país? Se acuerda de los cantos y oraciones, la comida y las tradiciones? Esta cuaresma, comparta las historias de sus experiencias cuaresmales con sus familiares y amigos, y cuándo lo haga, piense en sus prácticas de hoy. Ore, ayune y ayude a otros. Arrepiéntase. Por nuestras prácticas cuaresmales pasadas y presentes, podemos ser transformados. Podemos ser convertidos en lo que celebramos, una memoria viva de sufrimiento, muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo.

CHAPUT, O.F.M. CAP. Over the years I ve heard from many good people who want a closer relationship with God. But they re stymied by what they perceive as God s silence. What they often mean, without knowing it, is that they d like God to do something dramatic in their lives; something with a hint of Mt. Sinai that proves his credentials. But God typically doesn t work that way. He s not in the theater business. God wants to be loved and even in a sense courted which means that we can t be passive partners in the relationship. 7 On Sunday, February 2nd, 2014, the Cathedral s IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHAPEL, held a special celebration of the Feast of La Virgen de la Candelaria. This celebration remind us The Presentation of the Lord in Jerusalem. Children walked in procession with candles, and they were also blessed by Fr. Angelo Hernandez. 8 JUSTICIA PARA INMIGRANTES Somos una familia bajo Dios! M ary Beth Schluckebier is currently working a couple of hours a week with the Office for Cultural Ministries on Immigration Reform. She is grateful for the opportunity to stay involved in immigration advocacy, while also studying at Temple University Law School. Mary Beth previously worked at Visitation Parish with the SSJ Mission Corps., at Providence Center in Kensington, and in Washington D.C. in Migration and Refugee Services at the USCCB, where the Justice for Immigrants Campaign is headquartered. At present, the Office for Cultural Ministries is collaborating with various parish communities and Catholic Relief Services to set up meetings with members of the U.S. House of Representatives in order to encourage them to vote for federal immigration reform that is humane and just. Additionally, the Office is involved in advocacy for local immigration policies that protect families and individuals in the immigrant community in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. We invite and encourage everyone to take a moment to visit the Justice for Immigrants website at where you can send an e- postcard to your U.S. Representatives calling for immigration reform. Congress has delayed far too long already. Families and individuals are being harmed by the negative impacts of our broken immigration system every day, and Catholics across the country are called to act for unity and justice for the immigrant community.
