1 GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk In Case You Missed Sign Up Sunday If you were out of town last weekend or simply weren t able to get over to the Reception Hall last Sunday to sign up for one of the varied ministries or organizations in the parish, you still have time to call the office and leave your name with one of the staff members, indicating your particular area of interest. We will be sure to put you in touch with the coordinator/leader of the ministry or organization. I am grateful to all those who did stop by and to all those parishioners already serving as volunteers in all of our ministries, organizations, and committees. I am also grateful to those who took the opportunity to register as members of the parish. At a recent meeting with Bishop Sullivan, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of New York, and pastors serving in the vicariates of Northern Manhattan, East Harlem, and Central Harlem, the important question of the number of registered parishioners was again brought to our attention. These numbers, which are in fact sent to Rome, are used in many different ways when discussing important issues in the life of a parish and the Archdiocese. And so once again, I ask all those who regularly attend Mass here and are still not registered members, to please stop by the parish office and register. I would especially like to encourage all those young adults, 18 years and older, to register in the parish and remember that their parents have given them a good example to follow. An important reminder: only registered, active members of the parish are able to receive testimonial letters, references, etc. from the staff. October Count Numbers are Important As many of you have seen over the past several weekends, we have been counting the number of those attending Mass. As is required by all dioceses, these numbers are reported to the Archbishop s Office and the totals are then included in the final archdiocesan report sent to the Vatican. Within the next few weeks, I will share with you our parish attendance as well as some other statistics for our vicariate, which is a geographical territory designated by the Archdiocese (and required by Canon Law.) Numbers are often cold and don t always paint the whole picture. However, I think most people would agree that they are helpful. For instance, if I have no money in the bank, I am not likely going to make a major purchase or spend money that I don t have, thus incurring credit debt! Numbers are useful on the parish and archdiocesan level when deciding on the assignment of priests to a parish, elimination or expansion of Masses, closing or opening new parishes, ministries, etc. Numbers don t often portray the good work being done behind the scene for instance the number of office calls, the spiritual benefit of our programs and ministries, the long-term benefits of our social outreach, the spirit of community that exists in a parish, and so on Parish Anniversary Meeting Honoring Our Past, Celebrating Our Present, Securing Our Future I would like to thank all those parishioners who attended our Parish Anniversary Meeting last Thursday evening. I am grateful for the enthusiasm that was shown for all of the suggestions that were offered and I look forward to sharing those with the entire parish in the upcoming weeks. Some of the activities require immediate attention; those who volunteered for them will be contacted in the next few weeks. We are still accepting names for a mailing list in order to reach out to as many people as possible and to make sure that no one is excluded. Again, if you know former parishioners with close ties or continued affection for the parish, please do not forget to call the office with their names and addresses, or fill out one of the forms which are still available in the parish office. Light Up a Life 2010 We are once again preparing to offer parishioners and friends of Good Shepherd an opportunity to remember a living or deceased loved one or some other special intention in the community s prayers by sponsoring a light on our Christmas tree. Sponsorship packets will be available within the next few weeks. Keeping in line with the theme of light, the parish staff has recommended that the proceeds of this year s program be used for the replacement of new electric candles for one of the shrines in the church.

2 NEW YORK As in the past, parchment pages with your intentions will be displayed near the Nativity Scene in the church throughout the Christmas season. May God continue to bless you for your kind generosity and be assured of a remembrance in our prayers. Looking for Thanksgiving Dinner Volunteers With Thanksgiving now on our radar, we are looking for volunteers to assist us with our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. If you are interested in helping to shop, set up, serve, or clean up (we always need extra help with clean up so that everyone can leave at a reasonable hour!) please call the Parish Office to leave your name and area of interest with one of our staff members. This will be a bilingual liturgy and will take the place of the Holy Hour that day. Please plan in joining us during this special Mass. ANNUAL BUS TRIP TO GATE OF HEAVEN St. Joseph Council Knights of Columbus is sponsoring their annual bus trip to Gate of Heaven Cemetery next Sunday, November 7 th. CANNED FOOD COLLECTION We are collecting all types of canned food and non-perishable goods for our annual Thanksgiving baskets that are given to needy families. God bless you! 2011 MASS BOOK OPENS The 2011 Mass Book will open next Saturday, November 6 th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Parish Office. Forms for Mass Intentions will be available in the office starting this weekend. Please bring your completed request form with you on Saturday, November 6 th. Mass intention requests that are left at the office or sent in the mail will be attended to during the following week. The offering for each Mass is $ Each person is allowed a total of six Mass intentions. MEN S CLUB THANK YOU! The members of the Good Shepherd Men's Club thank everyone who supported the recent Honky Tonk Night with Orville Davis. Thanks to everyone who purchased 50/50 tickets and to those who attended the event. Thanks to Fr. Bob for giving the okay to the Club to sell chances after all the Masses. 4 OCTOBER 31, 2010 Del Escritorio del Pastor En Caso de Que se Perdió el Domingo de Inscripción Si usted estuvo fuera de la ciudad el pasado fin de semana o simplemente no pudo ir a la Sala de Recepción el domingo pasado para inscribirse para uno de nuestros varios ministros u organizaciones en la parroquia, todavía tiene tiempo de llamar a la oficina y dejar su nombre con uno de los miembros del personal, indicando su área de interés. Estaremos seguros de ponerlos en contacto con el coordinador/líder del ministro u organización. Estoy agradecido a todos aquellos que pasaron por la Sala de Recepción y todos aquellos feligreses que ya están sirviendo como voluntarios en todos nuestros ministros, organizaciones y comités. También estoy agradecido a aquellos que tomaron la oportunidad de inscribirse como miembros de la parroquia. En una reciente reunión con el Obispo Sullivan, el Vicario General de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York, y con los pastores que prestan su servicio en los vicariatos del Norte de Manhattan, el Este de Harlem, y el Centro de Harlem, trajeron a nuestra atención la importante pregunta del numero de feligreses inscritos. Estos números, que son, de hecho, enviados a Roma, se utilizan de diferentes maneras cuando se habla de temas importantes en la vida de la parroquia y de la Arquidiócesis. Así que una vez más, les pido aquellos que asisten regularmente a misa aquí, y que todavía no están inscritos como miembros de la parroquia, a que por favor pasen por la oficina de la parroquia y se inscriban. En especial me gustaría animar a todos los jóvenes adultos, mayores de 18 años, a inscribirse en la parroquia y a que recuerden que sus padres les han dado un buen ejemplo a seguir. Un recordatorio importante: sólo miembros inscritos y activos de la parroquia podrán recibir cartas de referencias o de cualquier otro asunto por parte del personal. La Cuenta de Octubre Los Números son Importantes Como muchos de ustedes han visto durante las últimas semanas, hemos estado contando el número de personas asistiendo a Misa. Como es requerido por todas las diócesis, estos números son reportados a la Oficina del Arzobispo y el total son incluidos en el reporte final de la arquidiócesis que es enviado al Vaticano. En las próximas semanas, compartiré con ustedes el número de asistencia a Misa así como otras estadísticas para nuestro vicariato, el cual es un territorio geográfico designado por la Arquidiócesis (y requerido por la Ley Canoníca.) A menudo los números pueden ser bajos y no siempre pintan el cuadro completo. Sin embargo, pienso que muchas personas estarían de acuerdo que estos números son de ayuda. Por ejemplo, si no tengo nada de dinero en el banco, no es probable que vaya hacer compras grandes o gastar el dinero que no tengo, y por lo tanto crear una deuda de credito. Los números son útiles a nivel de la parroquia y de la arquidiócesis cuando se decide en la asignación de los sacerdotes a las parroquias, la eliminación y expansión de Misas, abriendo o cerrando nuevas parroquia, ministros entre otras cosas. Los números no suelen representar el buen trabajo que se hace detrás de escena por ejemplo el número de llamadas a la oficina, el beneficio espiritual de nuestros programas y ministros, los beneficios de largo plazo de nuestra ayuda social, el espíritu de la comunidad que existe en la parroquia, y así sucesivamente Reunión del Aniversario de la Parroquia Honrando Nuestro Pasado, Celebrando Nuestro Presente, Asegurando Nuestro Futuro Me gustaría dar las gracias a todos los feligreses que asistieron a nuestra Reunión del Aniversario de la Parroquia el pasado jueves por la noche. Estoy agradecido por el entusiasmo que se mostro en todas las sugerencias que se ofrecieron y espero compartirlas con la parroquia entera en las próximas semanas. Algunas de las actividades requieren atención inmediata; aquellos que se ofrecieron como voluntarios para esas actividades serán contactadas en las próximas semanas. Todavía estamos aceptando nombres para nuestra lista de correo para poderle pasar la voz a todas las personas que sean posibles y para asegurarnos que nadie sea excluido. Una vez más, si usted conoce alguien que fue uno de nuestros feligreses con vínculos cercanos o que continua queriendo a la parroquia, por favor no se olviden de llamar a la oficina con su nombre y dirección, o de llenar uno de los formularios que siguen disponibles en la oficina de la parroquia. 5 TRIGÉSIMO PRIMER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO En línea con el tema de luz, el personal parroquial ha recomendado que lo recaudado en el programa de este año sea usado para el reemplazo de las nuevas velas eléctricas para uno de los santuarios en la iglesia. Al igual que en el pasado, las paginas de pergamino con sus intenciones serán puestas de muestra cerca de la Natividad en la iglesia durante toda la temporada Navideña. Que Dios los siga bendiciendo por su generosidad y tengan por seguro que los recordaremos en nuestras oraciones. Buscando Voluntarios para la Cena de Acción de Gracias Con el Día de Acción de Gracias en nuestro alrededor, estamos buscando a voluntarios que nos ayuden con nuestra Cena Anual de Acción de Gracias. Si usted esta interesado en ayudar a ser las compras, organizar, servir o limpiar ( siempre necesitamos una ayuda adicional con la limpieza para que todos se puedan ir a una hora razonable!), por favor llame a la Oficina de la Parroquia y deje su nombre, número de teléfono y su área de interés con alguien del personal. O puede usar llenar el formulario que encontrara atrás de la iglesia o en la rectoría, y ponerlo en las canastas de ofertorio, dejarlo en la oficina, o devolverlo por correo a mas tardar el lunes 8 de noviembre.
