LIGHT IN A DARK WORLD. Why are pornography and masturbation immoral? (1) Isn t sexual pleasure something good and natural? (2) Isn t suppressing sexual desire unhealthy? (3) As long as sexual pleasure is sought in a way that does not violate the consent of another person, shouldn t it be legal and protected as a human right? Affirmative answers to these three questions by many individuals, by many in our judicial system, and by many in the mass media, have brought about a sexual revolution and a so-called free and safe sex mentality in Western culture at large. Nevertheless, the Catholic Church continues to teach, as it has from its very foundation, that pornography and masturbation are expressions of the sin of lust. Many have decided to reject the Church s teaching on sexual morality as oldfashioned and culturally conditioned. It is rare that topics on sexual morality are presented well or at all in short homilies. Therefore, many Catholics become vulnerable to the confusion and ignorance that swirl around the questions on sexual morality. The newspaper headlines recently stated that children should have a right to sex education in our public schools. This begs the question; what ought sex education include? Whose truth about sex ought to be taught? The following principle can help us understand what has gone wrong with secular understandings of human sexuality. It can also shine a light on how it can be corrected. The principle comes in the form of this quote from St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, formerly Edith Stein, a renowned Jewish philosophical thinker and writer, who became a convert to the Catholic Church and a Carmelite nun, and then died a martyr s death under Hitler in Auschwitz: Beware of those who preach truth without love; and, beware of those who preach love without truth. Truth without love is not truth and love without truth is not love. St. Paul puts it this way, Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ (Eph.4:15) Please ponder this. 3 CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION The Corpus Christi Procession with the Blessed Sacrament will be on June 7, after the 12:30 pm Mass. Any questions call SHELTER OPERATIONS TRAINING & EXERCISE DRILL Madera County Public Health Department Emergency Preparedness Program will be having a Shelter Operations Training & Exercise Drill on Thursday, June 11, 2015 from 8:30 am 4:30 pm at Holy Spouses Hall. Because we are a part of the Community Health Assistance & Medical Care Point (CHAMP) Program, our church will be a shelter side if a disaster should hit our City. Space is limited so to register for this training, please contact Marisol Torres at Ext. 523 FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM Freedom to Bear Witness will take place this year from June 21 to July 4. Materials are available at the official website, This year's theme emphasizes the connection between religious freedom and bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel, for which so many martyrs for the faith have already sacrificed. We anticipate that the US Supreme Court will rule during the Fortnight, (around June 29), on four cases concerning the legal definition of marriage in the United States. Two special Masses will begin and end the Fortnight for Freedom. On June 21 at 10:45 am EDT, Archbishop Lori will celebrate Mass at the Baltimore Basilica. On July 4 at noon EDT, Cardinal Donald Wuerl will celebrate Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. EWTN will televise both Masses. Parte 6 (continuación) LUZ EN UN MUNDO OSCURO. Por qué son inmorales la pornografía y la masturbación? (1) No es el placer sexual algo bueno y natural? (2) No es suprimir el deseo sexual saludable? (3) En la medida en que se busque el placer sexual de un modo que no viole el consentimiento de otra persona, no debería ser legal y protegido como un derecho humano? En general, las respuestas afirmativas a estas tres preguntas por muchos individuos, por muchos en nuestro sistema judicial y por muchos en los medios de comunicación han provocado una revolución sexual y una mentalidad de supuesto sexo libre y seguro en la cultura occidental. Sin embargo, la Iglesia Católica, continúa enseñando, como lo ha hecho desde su fundación, que la pornografía y la masturbación son expresiones de pecado y lujuria. Muchos han decidido rechazar la doctrina de la Iglesia sobre la moralidad sexual como anticuada y culturalmente condicionada. Es raro que temas sobre la moralidad sexual sean bien presentados o que se presenten del todo en homilías cortas. Por lo tanto, muchos católicos son vulnerables a la confusión e ignorancia que giran alrededor de las preguntas sobre la moralidad sexual. Recientemente, titulares de periódicos declararon que los niños deberían de tener el derecho a la educación sexual en las escuelas públicas. Esto plantea la pregunta; Qué debería incluir la educación sexual? La verdad de quien sobre el sexo debería de enseñarse? El siguiente principio nos puede ayudar a entender que es lo que ha ido mal con los entendimientos seculares de la sexualidad humana. También puede brillar una luz de cómo se puede corregir. El principio viene en forma de cita de Santa Teresa Benedicta de la Cruz, quien antes era Edith Stein, una renombrada judía, pensadora y escritora filosófica, quien se convirtió a la Iglesia Católica y quien fue una monja Carmelita, y murió como mártir bajo Hitler en Auschwitz: Guardaos de los que predican la verdad sin amor; y, guardaos de los que predican amor sin verdad. La verdad sin amor no es verdad y el amor sin verdad no es amor. San Pablo lo dice de esta manera, Viviendo con autenticidad el amor, crezcamos en todo hacia aquel que es la cabeza, Cristo (Efe. 4:15). Por favor reflexionen sobre esto.
