I speak for a lot of people here when I say that I am very proud to be at Hoover High. Our students are just awesome. An AP class there is no different than an AP class here, he said. When Hoover High celebrates the Class of 2014 at its June 11 commencement, Hoang will be the school s valedictorian. Daniel is the salutatorian. Hoang is going to UC Davis in the fall to study computer science en route to a career as a computer animator, perhaps for Pixar films or for her own video game company. Daniel will attend UC Berkeley. Hoover High AVID teacher Yolanda Noyes is among Hoang s and Daniel s biggest fans. Both of these students are so ridiculously soft-spoken and neither likes attention, but they both work so hard and are so deserving and are so determined to succeed, Noyes said. Their roads to success have included more than a few turns. One of the first things Hoang had to do when she arrived in San Diego with her family seven years ago was learn English. It was quite hard, but it wasn t that bad because I was with other kids and friends in my class who helped me, said Hoang, who added, I kept working hard to get good grades to make my parents happy. When Hoang enrolled at Hoover, she devoted herself to becoming more outgoing. Her strategy? Join and participate in several campus clubs and organizations. Among them, the Garden Club, the Asian Pacific American Club, and Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA). She also has taken numerous honors and advanced courses. She did better than aced every test, said Hoang s honors chemistry teacher, Robert North. She aced every assignment, every quiz. She was always on task. Hoang concedes she may spend more time with computers and video games than studying, but her teachers say her concentration in class is unparalleled. She knows what she wants out of life and she is willing to put in the work to get there, North said. Asked if she has any weaknesses, Hoang says, I cannot do sports. While Hoang has been attending schools in City Heights since she emigrated from Vietnam, Daniel who lives with his mother in City Heights opted until a few years ago to study at campuses elsewhere in the city. He attended Green Elementary School, near Patrick Henry High in the San Carlos neighborhood of San Diego, before spending sixth-, seventh-, and eighth- and ninth-grade at The Preuss School in La Jolla. Always driven academically, Daniel said Preuss didn t do much for him. Everything is geared toward getting students information about college and getting prepared to go to college, he said. I already knew I was going to college. There was no reason for me to go there anymore. Daniel said his goal has long been to become a biomedical researcher, but when his motivation grew stronger after his father died of kidney cancer last year. Now, he wants to find a cure for the disease. Daniel lives with his mother, and the family has had to scrape to get by. There are a lot of kids who have grown up in the same conditions as mine, said Daniel, who is a member of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers. But I ve known for a long time that if you get a great education and if you go to college, you can open a lot of doors. The program is currently in pilot mode. The idea came from Price Charities as a way to support Parent Center services at Rosa Parks Elementary School. Because the information was best provided online, the service is useful to anyone with Internet access. The service works on mobile devices as well. For parents with students attending Rosa Parks, two computers have been set up in the Parent Center with the exclusive function of connecting to CityHeights- Links.org. Parents using the system there are providing feedback as to how it can be improved. P2 EDUCATION BRIEFS Local students watch history City Heights students Rosa Olascoaga and David Camacho were flown to Sacramento to attend the swearing-in ceremony for Speaker of the Assembly Toni Atkins, who is the first San Diego Assembly representative to hold the powerful post. The students received a special invitation from Atkins and attended the event with Reality Changers founder and president Christopher Yanov. David is a ninth-grader at Hoover High School, where he is active in the ROTC program and the varsity swim team. Rosa is graduating from Patrick Henry High and will be attending the University of San Francisco in the fall. The two were selected after Atkins asked Yanov to choose two Reality Changers students to attend the ceremony. The choice was based on their community and program involvement, as well as their academic achievements. It is an honor to have been selected to witness the swearing-in of one of the only females to be Speaker of the Assembly, especially since she is from San Diego, Rosa said. She is an incredible role model for females. Said David: It was exciting to be able to participate in such an important moment. David is a daily presence at Reality Changers, where he raised his GPA by a full grade point after just six weeks of being in the program. He speaks all around San Diego about the struggles he faced as an inner-city student and how he was able to overcome them. His goal of becoming the first person in his family to attend college gets a boost this summer when he will attend UCSD s Academic Connections on a $4,000 scholarship provided by Reality Changers. Academic Connections is a three-week program in which high school students from around the world live on campus and take college-level classes for college-prep credit. 3 EDUCATION Local teachers net top honors By David Ogul City Heights Life One was born in Laos, learned English when she moved to City Heights at age 4 and earned a bachelor s degree from UC San Diego in biology. The other grew up in San Diego, landed a job with the city s Park and Recreation Department after graduating from college and decided to go back to school to earn a second degree in mathematics. Khamphet Pease, a math and science teacher at Wilson Middle School, and Ken Herschman, a math instructor at Crawford High, have been named P3 Getting to the core of reading in third grade By Sue Greenberg United Way of San Diego All children reading at grade level independently by the end of third grade that s the goal of the City Heights Partnership for Children s Third Grade Reading Collaborative Action Network. Led by Rowan Elementary School Principal Kim Kossyta and former Community HousingWorks Manager Heather Laird, the network composed of principals, teachers, literacy experts and other educators knows all too well the importance of third-grade reading. With only half of thirdgraders in City Heights elementary schools scoring proficient on their assessments, reading for all elementary schools in the Hoover High School cluster has taken on more urgency, especially in the wake of the new Common Core State Standards. Certain statistics can t get repeated enough: Children from lower-income areas are 25 percent more likely to drop out of high school. And black and Hispanic students trail behind their white peers by more than 20 points on standardized tests. New standards mean new assessments. Beginning in spring 2015, standardized tests will ask students to explain their thinking and apply their knowledge more than previous multiple-answer tests could. Some school districts already have begun trials of the new assessments. The pressure is on for schools to prepare their students, and Kossyta with her trademark red hair flashing is ready to make that happen. This group is a true collaborative with schools, public agencies, libraries, literacy programs like Words Alive and the local Council of Literacy whatever is available in the community that can support children being proficient readers by third grade, Kossyta said. With 14 years at Rowan, Kossyta understands her students, their families and the neighborhood. And with fewer than 300 students, she acknowledges the challenges. All my teachers know each other well, and that s great, she said. But a smaller school does mean that folks have to step up a little more. Like many schools in the Hoover cluster, Rowan s students speak multiple languages 14 total creating yet more challenges. About 60 percent speak Spanish, and 10 percent speak Tagalog or other Pan-Asian languages, including Hmong. And though Rowan s test scores are higher than other elementary schools in the cluster, Kossyta knows that more work needs to be done. The Common Core State Standards are a huge shift, but we ve tried to stay a half-step ahead of them, Kossyta said. This includes becoming familiar with the levels of knowledge and proficiency the students are expected to have. For the last year and a half, the cluster has been holding meetings with parents. Friday morning, parents spend half an hour in the classroom, getting on the computer and seeing what the kids need to know, Kossyta said. The parents have all said, My kids are going to love this. That this includes taking tests on a computer. By familiarizing the parents, they will be in a better position to understand what their children need to know. We can do this, our kids can do this, Kossyta said. Our goal is to figure out what our kids need to know and how to use it. A big part of that shift involves technology, and that excites the students and the teachers. My teachers are into technology, she said. This is the world that kids coming up will use. To that end, Kossyta is going straight to the source. 4 INYOURWORDS Advocating for transit access By Abdulrahim Mohamed On April 22 and 23, five City Heights resident leaders traveled to Sacramento to take part in the TransForm 2014 Transportation Choices Summit and Advocacy Day. The transportation and public health advocates learned about the legislative process and met with various state lawmakers to talk about the work that Mid-City CAN is doing to support public transportation with the Youth Opportunity Pass. More than 800 students at Crawford, Hoover, Lincoln and San Diego high schools have secured the free transit passes, and the group is working to expand the program. Mid-City CAN Improving Transportation in City Heights Team members Khamar Osman, Abdullahi Mohamed, Angeli Hernandez, Barbara Nevarez and Abdulrahim Mohamed took part in the event. Abdulrahim Mohamed is a member of the Mid- City CAN Coordinating Council. I came to Sacramento with my fellow compatriots to advocate for a bus pass program on a state level and also learn about the legislative process. Breakout sessions were valuable in that we were able to learn the importance of knowing what you want and going after it. We also learned about getting the right information to plan and execute our goals and gain public support. I have a vision for the City of San Diego: having those bus passes is not an entitlement for students. It teaches students responsibility. Students need to learn the consequences of using it. I was born in Somalia, and grew up in the United States after living in Canada. I was held back a grade at Hoover High School. Now I m getting my graduate degree. She found her volunteer work was more rewarding than her profession, so she switched gears and became an educator. This was my calling, said Pease, who attended Wilson Middle School as a child and has been teaching there since earning her credential in Herschman was a youth director and sports coach who was rising up the ranks in the Park and Recreation Department, but decided to switch professions after spending several years as a supervisor. After earning a second degree in mathematics and then securing a teaching credential, Herschman went to work at what was then known as Crawford Educational Complex. It was tough going at first. After five years of teaching, Herschman s students weren t doing so well. Students don t perform that well. Failure wasn t an option for Herschman. The algebra instructor spent a year under the tutelage of math guru Carl Munn and calculus wiz Jon Winn, who also taught at Crawford and who used a datadriven process to improve results. It didn t take long for tests scores to soar in Herschman s classes. What happened after that was amazing, Herschman said. I got goose bumps on my arms and realized these kids can achieve, they can be successful. It s really about the instruction. Crawford Principal Ana Maria Alvarez praised Herschman s commitment to his craft. One of the incredible things about Mr. Herschman is that every minute, every day in his class counts, Alvarez said. Students know that Herschman is there to help them succeed, she said. Pease, too, has a steadfast commitment to her students. She is an adviser to the Cesar Chavez Service Club and leads the afterschool robotics club. She recently accompanied dozens of City Heights middle-schoolers to San Diego State University on a field trip to expose them to the possibilities of a career in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. On any weekend, (Pease) can be seen driving kids to robotics competitions or science fairs, colleague June Clark said. She even drives a minivan specifically so that she can transport interested students to extracurricular activities. Pease has a multiple-subject teaching credential with supplemental authorizations in math and science from SDSU. She also has a GATE certification from UCSD and a master s degree in curriculum design and teaching from the University of San Diego. She grew up in City Heights and attended Central Elementary School, in addition to Wilson Middle. She said a child s family is key in learning. 5 EDUCATION Salaam center drives student success P5 Mohamed Mohamed By Adam Ward Mid-City CAN Mohamed Mohamed is a testament to the Salaam Cultural Center s success. Mohamed, 19, was struggling in school when he joined the organization s youth group about three years ago. Freshman year, I had like a 1.6 grade point average, he said. He found plenty of help and support at the center, and he graduated with a grade point average of 3.6. Now he is succeeding in college. The center, which opened Jan. 11, 2011, is recruiting college students to help young people with English and math. Mohamed is working as a volunteer youth coordinator in appreciation, he said, of what he has in the United States. It makes you think, you know, how good of an opportunity you have, and it makes you want to do better, Mohamed said. A group of Cesar Chavez Service Club members from Woodrow Wilson Middle School recently trekked to Mesa College to honor renowned educator, activist and feminist Gracia Molina de Pick during a celebration in her honor at Mesa College. The sixth-graders also met long-time activists Linda and Carlos LeGerrette, who established Cesar Chavez Service Clubs around the region based on community service and values promoted by the civil rights leader. The March 20 ceremony included a dedication of the Gracia Molina de Pick Glass Gallery. It also was Molina de Pick s birthday and the Chavistas honored her by singing Las Mananitas and Happy Birthday at the event. The sixth-graders thanked the educator for her ongoing work and for inspiring them to believe in themselves and to know they can make a difference. Molina de Pick founded the Chicano Studies Department at Mesa College in She has spent her life advocating for social justice and equality for women, indigenous communities, labor union members and immigrants. Born in Mexico City, Molina de Pick moved to San Diego in She earned degrees from San Diego State University and pursued doctoral studies at UC San Diego and the University of Southern California. As a faculty member at Mesa College, she crafted the curriculum for the first associate s degree in Chicano Studies at the campus. Later, she was one of the founders of Thurgood Marshall College at UCSD. She also founded IMPACT, an organization protecting the civil rights of Mexican-Americans in San Diego, and the Comision Femenil Mexicana Nacional, the first national feminist Chicana association. As a professor at Mesa College, Gracia mentored Linda and Carlos LeGerrette, who in 2001 established the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs in San Diego County. Today, there are 21 service clubs with 400 student members. Wilson Middle School students taking part in the trip were Ruby Martinez, Mehalet Shibre, Rosario Perez and Chantal Estrada, all of whom thanked Molina de Pick for inspiring them to serve others and improve their community.
