COURSE OBJECTIVES This course is designed to help students acquire language proficiency at the intermediate level while reviewing the grammar foundations attained in Spanish 101, 102, and 201. Because many of our students want to use the language to enhance their career opportunities and to communicate with Spanish speakers this course addresses this concern in three ways: A. It introduces and practices SELECTED GRAMMAR STRUCTURES and useful VOCABULARY to reinforce the development of reading and writing skills. B. It gives students the opportunity to interact with materials in EVERYDAY situations stimulating conversation about topics that deal with global concerns. C. It presents different aspects of contemporary HISPANIC CULTURES providing awareness and appreciation of the rich legacy and the ethical values of this culture. REQUIRED TEXTS: IDENTIDADES by Elizabeth Guzmán (et al.) Pearson Education, 2013, third edition.. A Spanish-English dictionary COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Homework: Homework is assigned from the main text on a daily basis. (Also grammar structures and its pages are written on a board every day). Students are responsible for reading the pages and doing the exercises BEFORE coming to class. All written assignments will be collected by the instructor on Thursday and not late homework is accepted. Oral presentation: Students must give an oral presentation about a topic related to ONE of the chapters of the textbook at the end of the semester. Tests and final exam: There will be 3 tests as indicated and a final exam. Compositions: Students must write two compositions in order to stress writing skills as an integral part of the language acquisition process. They must follow the guidelines given by the instructor. One composition (first one) must be written twice. Make ups: Make-ups are NOT GIVEN, only in cases of extraordinary circumstances. GRADING CRITERIA Participation and preparation 10% 3 tests 40% Homework 15% Final exam 20%
