1 THE CATHOLIC MIRROR The primary task of a diocesan newspaper is to serve the truth with courage, helping the public see, understand and live reality with the eyes of God. - Pope Benedict XVI, Nov. 25, 2006 Vol. 47, No. 6 July 19, 2013 Rural Life Mass offers enjoyable day for entire family RELIGIOUS LIBERTY By Kelly Mescher Collins Staff Writer Plan for a fun day of activities for the entire family at the third annual Rural Life Mass on Aug. 25. 2 2 The Catholic Mirror, July 19, 2013 Diocesan News In the Heartland with Bishop Pates Drug trade in South America, immigration reform and more Remembering Bill Krause In the course of my ministry as Bishop of Des Moines, I had the fortunate opportunity to come to know Bill Krause as a friend and advisor. Bill s organizing ability and entrepreneurial spirit are legendary in his founding of Kum & Go convenience stores. In addition, along with his wife, Nan, he was most generous in sharing their wealth. Among gifts to Catholic organizations were those to Dowling Catholic High School, Holy Family Innercity Catholic School and parish and diocesan drives. Support to students, especially the poor and underprivileged, was basically to open doors of opportunity for them. In my relationship with Bill, two characteristics were prominent: he held people accountable and he had a strong Catholic faith. Bill was always personally interested in the activities and projects of the diocese. He would ask pointed questions and encourage ongoing action and movement. He believed THE CATHOLIC By Bishop Richard E. Pates in support but with expectations of accountability how is everything really going to come out? Bill Krause was also a man of evident personal faith. Before his death during a prolonged illness, I had the privilege of anointing him. He received the sacrament with great openness and a realization that he was now being drawn into a new phase of life. I am confident that he entered eternal life with his characteristic gusto and determination. The insidious drug trade I was privileged recently to conduct a solidarity visit to Colombia and Peru in my current role as chairman of the International Justice and Peace Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). One issue which surfaced during our visit was the Bishop Pates is twice honored Bishop Richard Pates has received two honors recently. The Diocesan Information Systems Conference has honored Bishop Pates, the group s first episcopal moderator, by renaming an annual mission grant for him. This year, the Bishop Richard Pates Mission Grant Awards go to the Don Bosco Vocational Training Center for Girls in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, The Good Shepherd Ministry Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. and Nativity Catholic Church in the Diocese of St. Petersburg, Fla. Bishop Pates also was honored by the Catholic Press Association for his 2012 article in America magazine entitled Coverage of Election which won first place in the category Best Coverage of the Election and Forming Conscience. Judges said the article posed insightful questions. production of coca (the plant from which cocaine is extracted) and the insidious chain of negative effects that follow in its wake. The first is on the site of crop development where, from the start, corruption, violence, commerce outside the rule of law create disruption in these local communities. Such destructive activity follows the trail of manufacturing these drugs and then shipping them to the United States and Europe. We know that 77 Mexican individuals have been killed in drug trafficking. The Columbian and Peruvian governments in concert with the United States have been addressing this problem at its source. In Colombia, they spray the fields where the crops are killed. It is claimed that production has declined by 50 percent and at the same time consumption of cocaine in the United States has declined by 50 percent. In Peru, the approach is to introduce alternative crops where coca is grown along with infrastructure facilitating shipping of the produce to market. This method seems to best serve the long-term benefit of the farmers. Meanwhile, on this side of the problem in the United States we know the enormous suffering and personal tragedy that are associated with drug consumption. Drug trade and usage are the cause for a high percentage of population in our jails and have wreaked havoc with families and individuals. It serves the best interests of all for us to contribute strong efforts especially to interdict their initial usage. Immigration reform The U.S. Senate has passed an immigration reform bill that now goes before the House of Representatives. There are several considerations. One certainly is the preservation of the rule of law which is at the heart of whom we are as Americans. We come from many different countries, cultures and traditions. What makes us blend together and work as one country is the rule of law. At the same time, given our own immigrant background and our deep Christian conviction, For I was a stranger and you welcomed me (Matthew 25:35) we need to recognize those actually among us and resolve the issue with compassion and realism. This hankers back to the Bishop Pates on nuclear arsenals WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Catholics concerned about the size of the world s nuclear weapons inventory welcomed President Barack Obama s plan to reduce the size of America s nuclear arsenals if Russia agrees to similar cuts. The president announced in an address in Berlin June 19 that he would seek cuts by up to one-third from the current 1,550 weapons in strategic arsenals. The number of weapons deployed on longrange missiles, bombers and submarines was negotiated under the New START treaty ratified in We strongly applaud this direction of President Obama and really feel it s an enormous, progressive step, said Bishop Richard E. Pates of Des Moines, Iowa, chairman of the U.S. bishops Committee on International Justice and Peace. He recalled Pope Benedict XVI s World Day of Peace message in 2010, which urged political leaders to undertake concrete decisions toward progressive disarmament with a view to freeing our planet from nuclear arms. words of Emma Lazarus on the Statue of Liberty opened over the Fourth of July after restoration: Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand a mighty woman with a torch, whose flame is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command. The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp! cries she with silent lips. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door! The U.S. Senate was able to fashion a resolution, though not perfect, which tries to balance all considerations. I join my fellow members of the USCCB in urging the House of Representatives to follow suit in effecting legislation that respects the best traditions of our country. A new round of nuclear reductions would save billions of dollars and help the country begin to whittle down its debt and support programs that benefit the poor and those who suffer disproportionately in society, Bishop Pates told Catholic News Service. Marie Dennis, copresident of Pax Christi International, the Catholic peace movement, said her organization supports any move toward serious nuclear disarmament. 3 Diocesan News The Catholic Mirror, July 19, Father Garry Culver passes away Rev. Garry A. Culver, 77, died June 27, 2013 at Hospice House of Sarasota in Sarasota, Florida. A private Mass was held in Punta Gorda, FL with interment near his parents. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Theresa s Church in Des Moines, Iowa on August 5 at 10:00 AM. A reception will follow in the Church Hall. Father Culver attended St. Augustin Grade School, Dowling High School, Loras College and Mount Saint Bernard Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1964 in St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, Iowa. Father Garry will be remembered as a very dedicated priest. He had strong views about many topics and often surprised people with his colorful statements and expressive tendencies. Never one to blend into the scenery, Garry s dynamic presence was always felt in a room and his resounding laughter always made his appreciation of wit and humor known. A thoughtful, kind and deeply spiritual man, he was also a dedicated teacher. His students remember him fondly and with appreciation as well as, perhaps, a bit of trepidation as he was not a teacher to be trifled with. Students did not leave his tutelage skimming by on less than their best effort! Father Culver began his priesthood as an Assistant Pastor at St. John Church in Des Moines. After Canon Law studies in Rome he returned as Assistant Pastor at St. Mary s Panama, Iowa. He was a teacher at Dowling High School, Associate Pastor at St. Pius X Church then Pastor of St. Patrick s Audubon and Holy Trinity, Exira. After a time as Associate at St. Theresa Church he became Pastor at St. Peter, Defiance, then St. Patrick Perry and afterward St. John s, Greenfield. He served in the Matrimonial Tribunal of the Diocese from 1989 to He had Pastoral Care of parishes in Logan and Mondamin and was named Parochial Vicar of Sacred Heart Church in West Des Moines. He retired in the year 2000 after 36 years of service to his students and parishioners. All of his assignments were in Iowa. After retirement, Father Gary moved to Venice, Florida. Father Garry was born October 25, 1935 to Garry L Culver and Margaret Tyner Culver in Chicago IL. Father Culver is survived by his sisters Jennie (Charles) Miller of Venice, FL, Jackie (Harry) Roberts of Ft. Collins, CO, and Cora Culver of Kingman, AZ and by 15 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Diane Culver-Veehoff and his nephew Edward Feld. 4 4 The Catholic Mirror, July 19, 2013 If you have been to the Basilica of St. John, or to any diocesan activity, you have undoubtedly noticed the presence of two sisters, dressed in traditional habits, who project a sense of calm prayerfulness. They are Mother Kathleen Francis and Sister Mary Clare, the founders of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus who have served in a variety of ministries in the diocese since Mother Kathleen, then doctoral candidate Kathleen O Leary, came to Des Moines in 1989 to complete an internship in psychology. Here she had profound spiritual experiences and felt increasingly drawn into the life of her parish and the Church.. While considering other religious communities, she began to contemplate the possibility that she was being called to begin a new community. She said she felt in her heart the sadness of Christ, who felt alone and abandoned by those who were to give witness to him and his Church. From that time on, she said she felt called to give explicit witness to the reality of our loving and living God and began to think and pray about how a new community should be formed. In prayer she came to realize that the new community should be Franciscan in spirituality, centered in the Eucharist, consecrated to our Blessed Mother, and faithful to the pope and the magisterium of the Church. The women would live in community, sharing a common prayer life, and common apostolates; and as an outward sign of their witness to Christ and his Church, they would wear traditional religious habits. Seeking women to join her, she had the assistance of one of the Benedictine brothers who were at the basilica in the early 1990s. He knew Sister Mary Clare Clark who had been a religious for 13 years but had recently left her former community as being too liberal, and was living as a Franciscan Opinion hermitess in the Peoria, Ill. diocese. In time permission was granted by Bishop Joseph Charron for the women to begin their community. In 1994, on the Solemnity of Christ the King, they donned the habit of their new community. On June 16, 2009, Bishop Richard Pates raised the community to Private Association of the Faithful, the first official step on the path of becoming a recognized religious institute. Father Ray Higgins, of Stuart, currently serves as the community s liaison with the bishop. ` As with other religious communities, the sisters take the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. They also take a fourth vow of fidelity to the Holy Father and to the magisterium of the Church. While there are currently two sisters in the community, there have been numerous inquiries by women seeking to discern a vocation. Many, according to Mother Kathleen, have been directed to other communities that would be better suited for them, while others have discerned another vocation. We re still looking, said Mother Kathleen. We re looking for women on fire for their faith, who love the Church and Eucharistic adoration and would be willing Called to give witness to God s presence Take a break with Deacon Mike By Deacon Mike Manno to teach the faith, she said. From their beginning, the sisters have engaged in a variety of apostolates including adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, reparation and intercessory prayer for priests and religious, catechesis, counseling and pastoral care, and fostering vocations. The sisters also have given retreats and days of recollection. Sister Mary Clare serves as a parish visitor at the Basilica of St. John and serves on the Adoration Committee at St. Augustin Parish. Mother Kathleen provides psychological counseling and spiritual guidance on a donation basis and is a member of the diocesan Divine Mercy Committee. Both sisters serve as catechists for the St. Jude Catechetical Program and both have hopes of serving with the newly formed St. Jude Catholic Hospice of Iowa and perhaps with the St. Gregory Retreat Center. The sisters can be contacted by phone at or through their website Deacon Mike Manno serves St. Augustin Parish in Des Moines and has a show on Iowa Catholic Radio called Faith on Trial. Progress and setbacks for Iowa Catholics in legislature The past few weeks have seen both progress and setbacks on several long-term goals of the Catholic Conference on the state and federal levels. How things end up depends in part on your taking action. Let s start at the state level. Webcam abortions The Iowa Board of Medicine has voted 8-2 to approve a Notice of Intended Action to establish a standard of practice for physicians who perform chemical/medical abortions. The proposed rule would require a physician to be physically present while abortion drugs are being provided. In other words, chemical abortions initiated over a videoconference fail to meet a minimum standard of care. The rule would not interfere with other practices of telemedicine. We oppose all abortions, no matter the method. However, if abortions are taking place, the safety and informed consent of the women involved should be among our chief concerns. A public hearing on the proposal is set to take place Aug. 28. Immigration reform Late last month, the U.S. Senate passed S. 744, an immigration reform bill, by a vote of Archbishop Jose H. Gomez, archbishop of Los Angeles, Calif., and chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Migration, commended the Senate for passing the legislation. Archbishop Gomez stated that while the USCCB Committee on Migration disagrees with elements of the bill, including the unprecedented build-up of enforcement resources along the southern border, they see the legislation as an overall improvement upon the current situation. The U.S. Catholic bishops believe the status quo is causing much suffering among immigrants and their families. N o w that the Senate has passed the bill, attention turns to the U.S. House. Leadership there has said they intend to move forward with their own bill rather than the Senate version. To keep up to date on Capitol Comments by Tom Chapman the issue and send a message to Congress, visit Final HHS Mandate rule The federal Health and Human Services Department on June 28 released the final rule on the HHS Mandate. The mandate requires almost all health insurance plans to cover female sterilization and all FDA-approved contraceptives including drugs and devices that can prevent implantation, and at least one drug (Ella) that can cause abortion after implantation. The Church objects to providing these services to its employees because it violates our moral and religious convictions. The final rule does not appear, on first analysis, to eliminate the need to continue defending our rights in Congress and the courts, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New Bishop Richard Pates recently received the following letter: Thank you for your contribution of $33, to the 2013 Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. I thank you in the name of the Customs, Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and the Franciscans who work in the Holy Land. The Christians who live there are also very grateful to you. They need our prayers and support. The Custody of the Holy Land uses the money you and your priests and Letter to the Editor people give: To keep the shrines living Christian Communities and places of prayer and to welcome Pilgrims from around the world. +To run 14 schools open to all students regardless of religion or nationality. These schools build understanding and harmony between Muslims and Christians. +To help young Christians remain in the Holy Land, the Custody offers scholarships to different universities in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and York said July 3. I encourage you to contact your legislators in support of legislation that would address the problem: H.R. 940 and S. 1204, the Health Care Conscience Rights Act. Go to catholicbishops for an action alert. Marriage The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in late June on two separate cases regarding same-sex unions: 1) The federal Defense of Marriage Act; and 2) California s Prop 8, which recognized marriage only between a man and a woman in California. Lower courts had struck down both of these laws. The Supreme Court found DOMA unconstitutional. The Court ruled no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and injure those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity. Regarding Prop 8, the Court dismissed the case and said the private petitioners lacked standing to fight a California court s decision to strike down Prop 8. (The state of California had declined to defend it.) So the ruling striking down Prop 8 is still in force. These decisions still leaves the door open for states such as Iowa to take action on the marriage issue. The Court did not yet find a constitutional right to samesex marriage. Check out your diocese s website for your bishop s statement. A link to the websites can be found at www. iowacatholicconference.org by clicking on Resources. Farm bill fails Unexpectedly the U.S. House failed to pass its version of the Farm Bill that proposed heavy cuts of over $20 billion to SNAP (food stamps). The Senate had passed the Farm Bill on June 10. That bill included cuts of over $4 billion to SNAP and nearly $6 billion to conservation programs over ten years. Neither bill made what we consider to be necessary reforms to agricultural subsidy programs. Your advocacy is still needed. We will need to keep telling Congress to protect vulnerable people in this key agriculture legislation as they consider how to move this process forward. A sample message is available on the issue at catholicbishops. Tom Chapman is executive director of the Iowa Catholic Conference. 5 The Catholic Mirror, July 19, Opinion A Year of Faith Making a pilgrimage awakens faith One of the many great ways to boost our faith is to do a pilgrimage. There are many different kinds of pilgrimage. There are Marian ones to Medjugorje, Lourdes, Knock, and Guadalupe as well as ones to Rome, the Way of St. James, the footsteps of Paul, and to the Holy Land. In June, I was blessed to lead a group of pilgrims to the Holy Land to walk in the places where Jesus himself walked, taught, lived, died, was buried and rose. It is an incredible experience. This is the second time that I have been to the Holy Land and I am planning on going again in a few years. When you walk into the Church of the Annunciation, the Church of the Nativity, or the Holy Sepulcher, you have this realization that here is where Christ himself became flesh, was born, was crucified, died and buried and you cannot help to be in awe of it. One of the most striking things is to walk the Via Dolorosa (Way of Grief) or the Way of the Cross. We as Catholics are used to doing the Stations of the Cross during Lent remembering the path that Jesus took while he was carrying his Cross to Calvary. For us, it is normally a solemn quiet time in church to pray, but when you pray the Stations in Jerusalem it is not. There are people walking by you, there are people trying to sell you things, it is distracting and noisy. This is the way that it would have been at the time of Jesus. People would have been going about their day. People would have been working and trying to sell things. They would have been trying to go places, and yes, there would have been the disciples following Jesus in sorrow, as well as people following Jesus to see the spectacle of a man being crucified. The experience of a pilgrimage changes our inner picture of what and how things happened. While at times a pilgrimage can seem like a vacation, and it should be relaxing in some ways, a pilgrimage can really enliven our faith again, whether it be going to a shrine of a saint, to Rome, or to the Holy Land. One of the things that I have taken from my pilgrimages is that I can read Holy Scripture and then picture the scenes in my mind making them more real. I can read about Jesus preaching the Beatitudes and picture the scene from the mount overlooking the Sea of Galilee or read the Gospel of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane while praying where he did. I encourage everyone to take some kind of pilgrimage at least once in their lives. You will never be sorry. Father Ken Halbur is pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Creston and St. Edward Parish in Afton. He has been to the Holy Land twice, and led a group of pilgrimes there earlier this year. My personal faith journey with the Apostles Creed Last month s discussion on the homily leads us to the Profession of Faith. There is something exciting about the Profession of Faith. I would like to share two different and powerful experiences I have had of saying the creed. The first was on Sept. 16, I was at Mass at the University of Northern Iowa Catholic Student Center the day after the wedding of two good friends. The twin towers had collapsed and more than 3,000 Americans had died in the first major attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor. I don t remember the music, readings, or homily the following Sunday. But I do remember being together with friends and my family in faith, and the creed. At the first words, We believe in one God, (this was before the revisions), One of my favorite reflections on marriage is that it s a school of gratitude. This language was used in the Second Vatican Council and by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in their pastoral letter Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan. Marriage teaches us gratitude because within marriage we encounter the many gifts of love. Marriage is filled with gifts of love, but the most profound gift we receive is the gift of the very person of our spouse, given at the exchange of vows and confirmed in the marital embrace. This selfgift is a sign of Christ s self-gift; the most radical act of love this world has seen! Early in our parenting years, when Kevin and I agreed that our family was best served by my role as a mostly stay-at-home mom, I began trolling for reasons to take myself and our young children out of our suburban Chicago apartment at least once each day, lest I forgot how to speak and behave like a fairly educated adult. Being a bit of an introvert in a new community, I had little hope of making new mom-friends at the playground, so I picked up a family event directory and decided to join a moms group at a nearby nondenominational church. Though I had been confirmed Catholic a few years before, Kevin had grown up Presbyterian and we hadn t yet agreed on where or how to price our faith as a family so any Christian church seemed like welcoming territory. We moms met weekly for breakfast and a speaker while our children Year of Faith by Father Ken Halbur Lift Up Your Hearts Kyle Lechtenberg tears rolled down my face. Suddenly, being together with my brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, proclaiming my faith in the midst of a week that was both joy-filled and terror-stricken, was too much! We do believe in one God. I usually thought that phrase as our Catholic family only. But today the phrase evokes the sense of a greater unity. We Roman Catholics, Christians Jews, Muslims (see the Church s document Nostra Aetate on the relationship of the Church to non-christian religions) we hold together belief in the God of Abraham. Giving public voice to that tenet of faith is a powerful expression of the role of the creed in liturgy. The second was April 18, Through the encouragement and support of friends, family and my parish community, I traveled to Rome for the conclave that would elect Pope Benedict XVI. At the Mass that opened the conclave, I was seated in St. Peter s Basilica among people from many nations. I sat next to a priest of Filipino origin who was from New Jersey, a religious sister from France, and two priests from Nigeria, as well as a Spouses are a gift from God Invited to Joy Adam Storey Seeing Christ s love in our spouses love can transform our marriages and families. Little acts of love begin to take on cosmic Guest Column Leilani McDonald were cared for in the nursery, and I was always grateful for that little break in my mommy day. The topics were always delivered from a Christian perspective and discussed in small groups afterward. It was during these discussions that I frequently encountered what I call Catholic-But Syndrome, when someone says, I was raised Catholic, but or I m Catholic, but I disagree with as significance. This vision helps us see the meaning of our love, and how important it is to graciously receive Christ s love offered through our spouses. Marriage reminds us how much we have to be thankful for, but marriage also teaches us how to be thankful. The USCCB points out that the joyous gratitude is expressed in the giving of one s whole self to the other. We give thanks when we give ourselves and in a cyclical way the more thankful we are the more generous we become, which leads us back to gratitude. This vision of gratitude helps us recognize even our challenges as gifts, since through our challenges we have an well as Bible-wielding Christians for whom the world is strictly grouped into people going to heaven (them) and people going to hell (everyone else). And I daresay that it seemed as if the women with Catholic-But Syndrome were fearful of being relegated to hell by the non-catholic women sharing coffee and muffins at their table. Had I been just a lonely mother with little or no exposure to Christianity at the time, I m certain that the words ofa those apologetic Catholics or heavenhell-centered Protestants would have only driven me further from the faith. Instead, these encounters inspired me to start examining my own beliefs and behaviors as a professed Catholic and whether my example was helping or hindering another s understanding. At the very least, I didn t want to perpetuate Catholic-But Syndrome, nor did I feel comfortable and never will preaching the threat of hell to anyone. Do I parishioner from the city of Rome. When we arrived at the part of the creed, sung in Latin, et in unam, sanctam, catholicam, et apostolicam Ecclesiam (and in one, holy, catholic, apostolic Church), my heart leapt because here we were, all together, singing this ancient creed in an ancient language that the majority of people of this age understand only in translation, using music from the 1600s. Catholicam universal! When we take our place to worship God in the Sunday assembly, when we join our, I believe in one God to that of countless others, we help the Church more fully reflect the Body of Christ on earth. Kyle Lechtenberg is the diocesan director of the Office for Worship and welcomes comments or questions at or klechtenberg@dmdiocese.org. opportunity to love our spouses more fully. It is precisely when we lack a feeling of gratitude that we can be most grateful. Every part of our marriage and our spouse is a gift from God, and since we know that God doesn t give bad gifts, we also know that the only appropriate response is gratitude. In my own marriage, I know that I should often be more grateful than I am, but I also know that this attitude of thankfulness is a work in progress. I invite you to join me in growing in thankfulness for the beautiful gift of marriage and for our spouses! Catholic-but syndrome and other faith repellants believe in heaven and hell? Absolutely; yet, I understand heaven best as love or light or in the presence of God, and hell as hatred or darkness or the absence of God. These are ideas I can understand, that help influence my choices, big and small, on a daily basis. Reduced to those terms, it s a no-brainer where I prefer to dwell for eternity. As we Catholics and fellow Christians go about leaving the impression of our faith on others, let s consider whether our words and actions give testimony to Christ s tangible transformation of the human heart, and his very personal touch in our own. And let s leave the heaven-or-hell assignments to the rightful and ultimate judge of all souls, our one God and Father of all. The celebration at each parish included a procession through the city streets with the Eucharist and prayer at various altars set up by people s homes. At Corpus Christi Parish, Father Joel McNeil and Father Tan Tran led the one-mile procession of the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament beginning at Queen of Apostles Church, stopping at altars at five houses, and ending at Holy Family Church. Jeannette Bowen, a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court 330, has participated in the annual walk for several years, saying she appreciated that people were handing out flyers explaining the meaning of the feast and the procession. Angie Shea, of St. Patrick Church and a CDA member in Council Bluffs, said participating in the procession is a way to publicly witness or demonstrate one s beliefs. St. Anthony Parish in Des Moines has been holding a Corpus Christi procession for more than 75 years. It s been a tradition of the parish, said Michele Romeo, a secretary at the parish. It s a way for the parishioners and visitors to show their faith to the public. About 400 people processed through the streets of south Des Moines on May 19 th with a crowd of about 400 people stopping at five altars. The procession ended at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Divine Mercy Grotto with recognition of parishioners. Father Christopher Pisut, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Chariton, remembers the annual Corpus Christi procession from his childhood. About five years ago, he began one in Chariton. I grew up at St. Anthony s in Des Moines and so I had that exposure growing up, he said. At his parish, they had fourth degree Knights of Columbus, a pipe and drum corps, a choir and about 20 servers participating in the procession. Each of the altars represented saints such as St. Boniface, St. Patrick, St. Joseph and St. Anthony. One Marian altar was dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The two-hour procession was followed by a reception at the parish hall, which was decorated with an altar representing different saints of the Church. The parish sent posters to surrounding parishes encouraging people to come. This year, I noticed a lot more people I didn t recognize who came from other places, said Father Pisut. Anne Marie Cox contributed to this story.

7 The Catholic Mirror, July 19, 2013 Kum & Go founder W.A. Bill Krause passed away June 19. Though Krause came from meager beginnings, his company, Kum & Go, became one of the largest convenience stores chains in the Midwest. Krause excelled at growing his business, but many do not realize he was also a champion for Catholic education. Martin Flaherty, principal at Holy Family School in Des Moines, got to know Krause after he started providing support to the school, known for its high poverty rate among students. Through his support of Holy Family School, he has ensured that any child, regardless of financial means, could receive a Catholic education, Flaherty said. But more importantly, he served as a testament to our students that through hard work and an unyielding faith, that anyone can achieve the American Dream. Krause felt it was his duty to give back and give the kids hope, in both big and small ways. Whether it was picking up the eighth graders in limousines and taking them on rides in the Kum & Go corporate jet or buying them Dowling Catholic High School sweatshirts, he wanted to make a positive impact. He had been successful and believed he had a responsibility to do what he could to improve the lives of others, Flaherty said. He came from very humble beginnings and had to work very hard to achieve all he had. He wanted children to Diocesan News know, especially those who may have come from families who did not have much in means, that they too, through hard work, could be successful. Jerry Deegan, president of Dowling Catholic High School, said Krause helped change the outlook on life for both students and faculty. Any time he talked to the kids, he said believe in yourself, believe you can do it, Deegan said. He created believers. Krause was the first to make a large a donation as part of Dowling Catholic s $28 million We Believe campaign with his $3 million gift the largest in school history. That $3 million gift set the campaign in motion, Deegan said. It inspired others to give, and set the bar for the campaign. It really made people believe the campaign was going to work. Krause was on Dowling Catholic s foundation board and later had a place on their honorary board. He always wanted to stay connected to the school, Deegan said. Krause was the recipient of the Elizabeth Ann Seton Award, given by the National Catholic Education Association the only Iowan in history to ever receive the award. Dowling Catholic also gave him the Civitas Award for leadership. Bill Krause had a significant impact on the state of Iowa and far beyond, said Bishop Richard Pates of the Diocese of Des Moines. He exercised a strategic business vision and shared the fruits of his success generously; especially in the Catholic sphere in the field of education and in particular with the poor. His spirit lives on in all those he helped. Catholic education champion passes away By Kelly Mescher Collins Staff Writer 7 Joan Bindel, development director for the Diocese of Des Moines, said Krause is a role model for others. Bill s impact reaches far beyond his generosity to a wide variety of projects and programs, she said. The relationships he formed, the lives he changed and the outpouring of love that he showed to others are his true gifts to us. Krause will be missed, but his influence will be felt for generations to come. Everyone, on some level, wants to change the world for good, said Principal Flaherty. Mr. Krause achieved this end. The Iowa Knights of Columbus recognize several individuals from all over the state for their extraordinary service and leadership in charity and evangelization. 9 Hispanic Ministry Statistics say one in three are Hispanic The Catholic Mirror, July 19, By Tom Carney Contributing Writer It s likely that one of every three Catholics in the Diocese of Des Moines is Hispanic, according to U.S. census figures and an extrapolation on the percentage of Hispanics who are Catholic. In 2010, the latest year for which Hispanic numbers were available by county, the 23 counties in the diocese had 42,053 Hispanics, the census says. National studies show that 68 percent of Hispanics are Catholic, which means the diocese has about 32,790 Hispanic Catholics out of a total Catholic population of about 97,000. That proportion about 33 percent closely mirrors the national figure of 35 percent. About 75 percent of the state s Hispanics live in Des Moines. The problem with those numbers is the uncertainty of the 97,000, which represents the number of people registered in the parishes of the diocese. How many of those 97,000 are Hispanic, and how many Hispanic Catholics are not registered in a parish? Ellos pueden celebrar algunos It s likely that the total number of Catholics is significantly higher than the 97,000, and that would decrease the percentage of Hispanics. On the other hand, it s likely that there are a significantly higher number of Hispanic Catholics than those counted in the 2010 census, and that would increase the percentage of Catholic Hispanics What s certain is that the traditional view of the diocese and its parishes that they are almost entirely composed of European descendents who speak English is obsolete. But here are figures that are even more telling for the future of our diocese. According to data supplied by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Hispanics have accounted for 71 percent of the growth in the Catholic Church in the U.S. since 1960, and over 50 percent of all American Catholics under age 25 are Hispanic. What s more, by 2025 the majority of American Catholics will be Hispanic. That means Hispanics are vital to the future of our church. The Diocese of Des Moines has made progress in working to make our Hispanic brothers and sisters one with us Advocacy needed for immigration reform By Tom Chapman Once again Congress is considering a needed reform of our country s broken immigration system. The Catholic Church s political advocacy efforts center on the defense of the human life and dignity of every person, including the unborn. One of the principles of Catholic social teaching is that everyone has a right to a living wage in their own homeland. It follows that when persons are unable to find decent work and support themselves and their families, they have a right to migrate to other countries. Unfortunately in our country, there are only a relatively small number of visas for lowerskilled workers. This means there s no legal way to enter the country legally in a reasonable time frame if you need work. Interestingly, a large majority of Catholics support immigration reform legislation that provides a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country, according to a recent survey sponsored by the Office of Migration Policy and Public Affairs of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Overall, 77 percent of Catholic voters support a proposal that allows earned Qué es el Diaconado Permanente? By Mayra Moriel de Bañuelos Contributing Writer citizenship through meeting requirements like registration, paying a fine, paying taxes and taking English classes. Now that the Senate has passed S. 744, an immigration reform bill, by a vote of attention turns to the U.S. House. The bishops conference believes the United States needs an immigration system that brings together legal immigration with our long-term economic needs, holds up the principle of family unity and basic human rights, and provides better control on the border. Visit www. justiceforimmigrants.org and send a message to your member of Congress and encourage him to move the process forward. The outcome of the debate depends in part on how many of us are willing to step forward and contact our elected representatives. In Scripture, God promises that our judgment will be based on our treatment of the most vulnerable. Our country s law, in effect, says to millions of people who have come here looking for a better life, go back to the poverty from where you came. Our country should do better than that, and we can with your help. En nuestra comunidad hay una gran necesidad de diáconos at the parish and diocesan levels, to welcome them and to see to their pastoral needs. Several non- Hispanic priests, deacons and seminarians who speak Spanish work with Hispanics, and the diocese is blessed with several native Spanish speaking priests. The diocesan Hispanic Pastoral Commission, which was formed by Bishop Richard Pates in 2009, has been instrumental in hiring Mayra Moriel de Bañuelos as coordinator of Hispanic Ministry and Luis Salinas as coordinator of Hispanic Youth Ministry. They are working with the diocesan staff and parishes to serve the needs of the diocese s Hispanics. The commission, together with the bishop, is working to set up programs to train Hispanic lay leaders and permanent deacons. It is helping plan for a diocesan encuentro, or retreat/conference for Hispanic Catholics, similar to one held at Dowling Catholic High School in The encuentro will be held on Nov. 17 at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in West Des Moines. Tom Carney is cochair of the diocesan Hispanic Pastoral Commission. Reaching out to Hispanics is imperative By Bishop Richard E. Pates On a recent visit to a parish in our diocese, a parishioner remarked that there are no Hispanics in our parish. As census figures show, that observation is highly unlikely. Hispanics, and Hispanic Catholics, live and work in every county in our diocese. For whatever reason, many of our parishioners, and perhaps their pastors, aren t aware of the presence of Hispanic Catholics and may not be making Hispanics feel welcome in their parishes. What difference does it make? A look at the data provides the answer. As many as one in three of us Catholics are Hispanic, and half of us under the age of 25 are Hispanic. But it s not only a matter of numbers and their importance to the future of our church. As the experience of many of our parishes testify, Hispanics bring energy, devotion, a keen sense of family and so many qualities we need to maintain lively, faith-filled and love-filled communities. I urge all pastors, deacons, lay ministers and parishioners to seek out Hispanics and find ways to welcome them into their parishes. We want them to share ownership in the parish, to contribute to its material wellbeing, to participate fully in parish life and for Hispanic parents to encourage their children to be priests and religious. It may not always be easy. We may have to find ways to help them celebrate the Eucharist and the sacraments using the wonderful Spanish-speaking priests and deacons with whom we re blessed and help them pray in their own language, at least for the first generation of immigrants. No less can be expected of us, a pilgrim people ourselves. Oficina Del Ministerio Hispano Nuestra Visión es Activar y Promover el Ministerio para Católicos Hispanos Quiénes somos: Mayra C. St. Michael Parish, in Harlan, celebrates 125 years By Kelly Mescher Collins Staff Writer St. Michael Parish in Harlan celebrated its 125th anniversary on June 16. Bishop Richard Pates celebrated the Mass of Thanksgiving at 4 p.m. with former pastors Father Bob Hoeffler, Father Dave Polich and Father Jack McClure. Other religious in attendance included Father George Komo, Benedictine Father Dan Petsche, who grew up in Harlan and is now serving at Conception Abbey in Conception, Mo, and seven nuns who taught at the Catholic school in Harlan in the 1960s and 70s, said current pastor Father John Frost. A dinner prepared by the Knights of Columbus and the St. Michael s Ladies Guild was held afterwards, and former pastors shared their memories. Displays showed photos of the three different church buildings St. Michael has occupied, photos of pastors who had served since 1888 and photos of seminarians who had served the parish. Father Frost said that while way of life has changed dramatically in the past 125 years, some things will never change. We re continuing to minister to our youth, continue to do adult faith activities, continue to grow in our appreciation for the Lord in our life, continue to share our life and share our love of others in the community, do our part to grow in faith, continue to do what we can to grow in our faith and in our appreciation for God s work in our lives. Catholic Tuition Organization boosted by new legislation By Peter Johnson Staff Writer On June 11, Gov. Terry Branstad signed into law House File 625, an act that expands the school tuition organization tax credit program. School tuition organizations assist families financially to enable them to attend accredited non-public schools. This latest act expands on a tax credit program that was signed into law in 2006 after passing with bipartisan support through the Iowa legislature, raising the tax credit cap from $8.75 million to $12 million. The bill also expands eligibility requirements for donors to include limited liability companies and S corporations. The expansion of available funds will go towards tax credits for those who donate to school tuition organizations, like the Diocese of Des Moines Catholic Tuition Organization, established in Assisting almost 1,400 students attend 16 schools in the Des Moines diocese, grants from the Catholic Tuition Organization has stabilized and increased enrollment in Catholic schools. Since 2006, Catholic Tuition Organization has distributed more than $10 million in assistance to families. The signing of the legislation took place at the summer meeting at Des Moines Christian School for supporters of school choice legislation. Several state legislators and many school administrators were present. This bill represents another victory for school choice here in Iowa, and I m really proud to sign it here today at this special meeting, remarked Branstad upon signing the bill. 11 The Catholic Mirror, July 19, 2013 Catholic Youth Camp brings kids to Christ By Kelly Mescher Collins Staff Writer More than 800 young campers have attended Catholic Youth Camp at the St. Thomas More Center near Panora so far this summer. Students spend time swimming, horseback riding, using the zip line, making friends and more. Most importantly they are focusing on their faith, said Chris Wadle, the center s executive director. It is amazing to see the vibrancy and hope in the Church through such little witnesses in both the campers and counselors of Catholic Youth Camp, Wadle said. The theme for this year s camp has been Saints for All Seasons, further drawing kids into an understanding of the church and its history. We ve focused on a number of powerhouse saints for youth: St. Peter, St. Thomas More, St. Therese of Liseaux, Blessed Francisco and Jacinta to name a few, Wadle said. The campers ranging from grades three through nine have also been participating in daily Mass, prayers and special intentions. Catholic Youth Camp is a great opportunity for youth to grow in their faith in a fun and faithfilled environment, Wadle said. James Downey, seminarian at St. John Vianney in St. Paul, is a summer employee at Catholic Youth Camp who works on the zip line tower. He sees it as an environment Several School Sisters of St. Francis, who have served the Diocese of Des Moines, are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year. where kids can face their fears and have natural conversations about God. I find a chance to talk to the kids sitting on the sidelines, Downey said. There are little, golden opportunities to talk to them. Every night they spend time in the outdoor chapel before bed, taking in nature and the beautiful night sky, he said. I tell my story and talk about how each of them are called to be saints as well, Downey added. Jenna Lynn Bindel of Sacred Heart Parish attended camp concerns they had about high school. Classmate Adam Herzog, also of Sacred Heart, agrees that Padgett helped him when saying you don t have to change to make friends going into high school. The freshmen participated in a three-day activity called The Wall, exploring the obstacles facing them in life and how God can overcome any obstacle. At the end of the three days they knocked down a 4-ft tall wall. 12 12 The Catholic Mirror, July 19, 2013 Pope calls for repentance over treatment of migrants By Cindy Wooden Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Just a few hours before Pope Francis arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa July 8, the Italian coast guard accompanied another boat carrying immigrants to the island s port. The 165 immigrants, one of whom said they were originally from Mali, had spent two days at sea making the crossing from North Africa. Most will be repatriated, although a few may receive refugee status. In his homily at an outdoor Mass, Pope Francis said he decided to visit Lampedusa, a small island with a population of 6,000 and just 70 miles from Tunisia, after seeing newspaper headlines in June describing the drowning of immigrants at sea. Those boats, instead Pope Francis carrying a cross made from wood of shipwrecked boats carrying refugees. of being a means of hope, were a means of death, he said. Pope Francis said the deaths of the immigrants are like a thorn in the heart, which spurred him to offer public prayers for them, while also awakening people s consciences. Who is responsible for the blood of these brothers and sisters of ours? the pope asked in his homily. All of us respond: It wasn t me. I have nothing to do with it. It was others, certainly not me. Today no one feels responsible for this, he said. We have lost a sense of fraternal responsibility and are acting like those in the Gospel who saw the man who had been beaten, robbed and left on the road half dead, but they kept walking. Maybe we think, Oh, poor soul, but we continue on our way, the pope said. The culture of wellbeing, which leads us to think only of ourselves, makes us insensitive to the cries of others, Pope Francis said, adding that the globalization of the world s economy in many cases has led to the globalization of indifference. Still, the pope praised the many Lampedusa residents, as well as the volunteers and public security officers who do what they can to help the migrants who reach their shores. When the seas are calm, especially when there are wars and political upheaval in northern Africa, the desperate pay traffickers to give them a place on a boat bound for Europe. Usually the boats are rickety and dangerously overcrowded. Pope Francis told the crowd at Mass that the traffickers exploit the poverty of others and are people for whom the poverty of others is a source of income. The Mass was filled with reminders that Lampedusa is now synonymous with dangerous attempts to reach Europe: the altar was built over a small boat; the pastoral staff the pope used was carved from wood recycled from a shipwrecked boat; the lectern was made from old wood as well and had a ship s wheel mounted on the front; and even the chalice -- although lined with silver -- was carved from the wood of a wrecked boat. Who among us has wept for the immigrants, for the dangers they faced and for the thousands who died at sea, the pope asked. The globalization of indifference has taken from us the ability to weep. Let us ask the Lord for the grace to weep over our indifference, to weep over the cruelty in the world, in ourselves, and even in those who anonymously make socio-economic decisions that open the way to tragedies like this, Pope Francis said. The pope said, we ask forgiveness for our indifference toward so many brothers and sisters and for the ways in which well-being has anesthetized our hearts. Bishops find problems in Colombia, Peru, echo issues at home in U.S. LAMAS, Peru (CNS) -- Conflicts over natural resources and land rights in places like Peru and Colombia echo similar problems in the United States, said U.S. bishops who visited the two countries in late June. We came to express solidarity with the church in Peru and Colombia, that we are one family in Christ, and the concerns of one part of the family are the concerns of the other, Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of Tucson, Ariz. He said the bishops also wanted to understand more clearly the challenges of the church in Peru and Colombia, so they could talk about those issues with U.S. Catholics and government officials. The group also included Bishop Richard E. Pates of Des Moines, Iowa; Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros of Brooklyn; Carolyn Woo, president and chief executive officer of the U.S. bishops Catholic Relief Services; and staff members from CRS and the bishops conference. Before traveling to Peru, Miraculous Journeys Pilgrimage to Wisconsin, Chicago area and Indiana October. 3 8, 2013 With Father Joel Derks, OSB they spent two days in Colombia, meeting with bishops, members of the Catholic Church s social ministry and U.S. Embassy officials, and visiting Ciudad Bolivar, a sprawling low-income district on the south side of Bogota, the Colombian capital. In both countries, some discussion focused on conflicts between communities and extractive industries such as mining, Bishop Pates said. Minerals account for more than 60 percent of Peru s exports and are a growing share of Colombia s economy, but environmental issues and other problems often cause friction with local communities. Él hacía preguntas directas y Our Lady of the Americas Jamaica Festival August 4, am to 7pm Come and enjoy traditional Latin American Culture at Our Lady of the Americas 2013 Jamaica Festival This festival is an excellent way to enjoy a beautiful summer day and experience the treasure of another culture. 15 By Father Ken Doyle The Catholic Mirror, July 19, 2013 The Question Corner Q. What is the church s teaching on killing insects, rodents or any of God s creatures if they are doing you no harm? (I ve seen children try to burn ants with a magnifying glass.) (Morrilton, Ark.) A. Genesis clearly states that human beings are stewards of the rest of creation and are commissioned (Gn 1:28) to have dominion over... all the living things that crawl on the earth. Yet the authority we exercise is not absolute. Animals give God glory, and we owe them respect. For a child to torture ants by burning them with a magnifying glass is a clear moral wrong and violates the teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which says in No that it is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or to die needlessly. Against the contention of some activists, however, the catechism does clarify in No that it is legitimate to use animals for food and clothing. As to your question about killing insects or rodents, which, at the moment, might be doing you no harm, I would allow it under the rubric of dominion. Such animals can clearly inflict pain, can seriously disturb the tranquility needed for humane living and may, by their presence, contribute to unsanitary conditions that can lead to health hazards. In first encyclical, pope celebrates faith as light of human life By Francis X. Rocca Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis first encyclical, Lumen Fidei ( The Light of Faith ), is a celebration of Christian faith as the guiding light of a successful and fruitful life, inspiring social action as well as devotion to God, and illuminating every aspect of human existence, including philosophy and the natural sciences. The document, released July 5, completes a papal trilogy on the three theological virtues, following Pope Benedict XVI s encyclicals Deus Caritas Est (2005) on charity and Spe Salvi (2007) on hope. Publication of the encyclical was one of the most awaited events of the Year of Faith which began in October Pope Benedict had almost completed a first draft of an encyclical on faith before his retirement in February 2013, Pope Francis writes, adding that I have taken up his fine work and added a few contributions of my own. Commentators will likely differ in attributing specific passages, but the document clearly recalls the writings of Pope Benedict in its extensive treatment of the dialogue between faith and reason and its many citations of St. Augustine, not to mention references to Friedrich Nietzsche and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. On the other hand, warnings of the dangers of idolatry, Gnosticism and Pharisaism are stated. The Bible also illustrates how men and women break faith with God by worshipping substitutes for him. Idols exist, we begin to see, as a pretext for setting ourselves at the center of reality and worshipping the work of our own hands, the pope writes. Once man has lost the Pope clears way for canonizations of John Paul II, John XXIII By Cindy Wooden Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis signed a decree clearing the way for the canonization of Blessed John Paul II and has decided also to ask the world s cardinals to vote on the canonization of Blessed John XXIII, even in the absence of a miracle. After Pope Francis met July 5 with Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints Causes, the Vatican published a list of decrees the pope approved related to Blessed John Paul s canonization and 11 other sainthood causes. Publishing the decrees, the Vatican also said, The supreme pontiff approved the favorable votes of the ordinary session of the cardinal- and bishop-fathers regarding the canonization of Blessed John XXIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli) and has decided to convoke a consistory that will also involve the canonization of Blessed John Paul II. Normally, after a pope signs a decree recognizing the miracle needed for a canonization, the pope consults with cardinals around the world and calls a consistory -- a gathering attended by any cardinal who wants and is able to attend -- where those present voice their support for the pope s decision to proclaim a new saint. A date for a canonization ceremony is announced formally only during or immediately after the consistory. fundamental orientation which unifies his existence, he breaks down into the multiplicity of his desires... Idolatry, then, is always polytheism, an aimless passing from one lord to another. Faith finds its fulfillment in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the pope writes. By virtue of his humanity, Jesus is both the object of faith and the ultimate model and mediator for all believers. Christ is not simply the one in whom we believe, the supreme manifestation of God s love, Pope Francis writes. He is also the one with whom we are united precisely in order to believe. Faith does not merely gaze at Jesus, but sees things as Jesus himself sees them, with his own eyes: it is a participation in his way of seeing. Love one another as I have loved you.
