1 Template: Hypercholesterolemia Print Name: Hypercholesterolemia Physiologic Category: Endocrinology/Metabolic Allscripts Release Date: 10/08/2009 Status: Active Edit Date: 09/23/2009 Monographs: What is it? You have higher than normal amounts of cholesterol in your blood. Cholesterol is an important building block in the body, it is made by the liver and also comes from the foods we eat. The body uses cholesterol to build your cell walls and make important hormones. Excess cholesterol traveling in the bloodstream can damage the inside of your arteries. Too much cholesterol can block blood vessels. This can lead to stroke and heart attacks. There are several ways cholesterol travels in the blood. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is often called "the good cholesterol." It can help prevent buildup of cholesterol on blood vessels. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol can make the buildup worse. We treat people who have too much cholesterol, too much LDL, or not enough HDL. What is the cause? A common cause of high cholesterol is eating a diet high in saturated fat. Saturated fat is found in food that comes from animals. These foods include meat, eggs and dairy products. Saturated fats can raise your cholesterol levels as well somehow causing your liver to make too much cholesterol. That is because the liver turns these fats into cholesterol. You may be more likely to have high cholesterol if other people in your family have had high cholesterol, heart disease, or a stroke. Some diseases can increase your risk of high cholesterol. Diabetes is one disease that can increase your risk. Some medicines may also raise cholesterol. What are the symptoms? Having a high cholesterol level will not make you feel any different. We probably found your high level on a routine blood test. If an artery that supplies blood to your heart is blocked by cholesterol, the first symptom may be a heart attack. If the artery supplies blood to your brain, the first symptom may be a stroke. How is it treated? There are three approaches to lowering your cholesterol: diet, exercise, and medicine. We may suggest all three. Eat a diet that is low in saturated fats. Foods to avoid would include high-fat foods such as fried foods, meats, pastries, eggs, and bacon. Eat more low-fat foods such as fish, lean meats, vegetables, and grains. We can help you plan a diet that allows you to eat many of your favorite foods but perhaps in smaller amounts. If you are overweight, we may suggest that you lose weight. Even a small weight loss of 5 to 10 pounds can help. Exercise will help you do this and improve the health of your heart. Exercise also raises HDL levels. If diet and exercise do not bring down your cholesterol, there are medicines that can help. You may need more than one. You may need to take these medicines for the rest of your life. Smoking can raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke. Smoking and high cholesterol together add up to a huge risk. We can help you stop smoking. It is okay to drink alcohol if you limit how much you drink. The risk of heart disease is less in those who drink moderately than in nondrinkers. Moderate means one to two drinks per day for men. For women, this means one drink per day. This is not a reason to begin drinking, however. Heavy drinking can increase your cholesterol. It can lead to high blood pressure, obesity, alcoholism, and stroke. If drinking is a problem, we can help you deal with it. What can I expect? You will need to have your cholesterol checked regularly. It may take some time to bring it down to normal levels. Lifestyle changes and medical treatment can lower your risk of a heart attack or stroke. We may want to test other people in your family for this problem. What to watch for. Call 911 or go to the hospital right away if you have any of the following symptoms. If possible, take an aspirin on the way.. Chest pain that is severe or crushing, or lasts longer than 30 minutes. The pain may spread up to your neck or down one arm.. Severe trouble breathing (you can't get your breath even while resting).
2 . Your heartbeat feels wrong and you are sweating, or feel dizzy, faint, or sick to your stomach.. Sudden loss of strength, feeling, or the ability to move part of your body. Confusion Call us right away if you have any of the following:. Dizziness for no obvious reason. Severe headache. Difficulty with speech. Shortness of breath even when you are doing very little. Any new pain in your neck or arm, especially if you feel unwell. Pain or pressure under your breastbone
