1 7 March 2008 Non-hotel tourist accommodation occupancy survey January Overnight stays in collective non-hotel accommodation decrease 0.5% in January, as compared to the same month in 2007 Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (holiday dwellings, campsites and rural tourist establishments) reached almost 5.4 million in January, 0.5% less than in the same month of the previous year. Resident overnight stays increased 0.9%, while non-resident overnight stays decreased 0.8%. Given the interannual increase in the number of travellers (1.0%), the average stay decreased 1.5%, as compared with January 2007, and stood at 8.1 nights per traveller. Resident overnight stays decreased by 2.5% and non-resident overnight stays decreased by 1.9%. Available holiday dwellings decreased 1.4%, surpassing 354,507 bedplaces. 2 Non-resident overnight stays in holiday dwellings represented 85.7% of the total. The United Kingdom was the main country of origin, with nearly 1.1 million overnight stays, 9.4% less than in January of the previous year. The next country of origin was Germany, with more than 724,000 overnight stays and an interannual rate of 11.9%. Canarias was the preferred holiday dwelling destination, with more than 3.4 million overnight stays, 3.0% fewer than in January Comunitat Valenciana was the second destination of choice, with almost 300,460 overnight stays, for an increase of 9.6%. Among non-residents, Canarias, Comunitat Valenciana and Andalucía were the preferred destinations. On the other hand, the destinations with the most overnight stays by resident travellers were Canarias, Cataluña and Comunitat Valenciana. Canarias presented the highest occupancy rate, with 70.5% of available holiday dwellings occupied. It was followed by Comunidad de Madrid (58.0%) and Illes Balears (49.4%). By tourist areas, Gran Canaria was the preferred destination in this accommodation modality, with over 1.4 million overnight stays in January and an occupancy rate of 78.7%. The tourist sites with the greatest number of overnight stays were San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Mogán and Arona. Prices for holiday dwellings increase 2.7% in January The Holiday Dwelling Price Index registered a 2.7% increase in January, a rate 0.9 points higher than that for the previous month. The tour-operator and travel agency rate, which carried the greatest weighting in the weight structure for this month (66.3%), registered a 2.1% interannual rate increase. 3 Overnight stays in tourist campsites increase 5.5% Jan-07 Feb-07 Interannual rates of overnight stays in tourist campsites in % Mar-07 Apr-07 May-07 Jun-07 Overnight stays in tourist campsites reached almost 807,000 in January, representing a 5.5% interannual rate increase. Overnight stays by resident travellers increased 6.5%, and those by non-resident travellers increased 5.2%. Tourist campsites offered 254,210 bedplaces, 2.7% more than in the same month of % of the available lots were occupied, for a 2.9% increase in the interannual rate. The weekend occupancy rate by lot reached 37.1%, that is, 1.2% lower than in January % of overnight stays at tourist campsites were by non-residents. The United Kingdom was the main country of origin, with 39% of overnight stays by non-residents (12.8% higher). The following country of origin was Germany. Comunitat Valenciana was the preferred destination for camping, with over 375,830 overnight stays, 8.0% higher than in January Andalucía was the second choice of destination, with over 158,500 overnight stays, indicating an increase of 0.5%. Among non-residents, Comunidad Valenciana, Andalucía and Región de Murcia were the preferred destinations. On the other hand, the destinations with the most overnight stays by resident travellers were Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana and Andalucía. In November, the highest campsite occupancy rate was registered in La Rioja (with 66.6% of the available lots). It was followed by Región de Murcia (59.0%), and Comunitat Valenciana (58.2%). By tourist area, Costa Blanca was the first choice of destination, with over 236,700 overnight stays in January and an occupation rate of 72.3%. The tourist sites with most overnight stays were Benidorm, Cartagena and Mazarrón. Prices of tourist campsites increase 5.0% Interannual variation rate TCPI The Tourist Campsite Price Index showed an interannual growth of 5.0% in January. The normal rate, which had the greatest weight in the weight structure for this month (54.7%), increased 4.5%. 4 Overnight stays by residents in rural tourist accommodation increase 4.1% in January, as compared to the same month of the previous year Overnight stays in rural tourist accommodation reached 269,150 in January, representing an interannual increase of 5.0%. Overnight stays by residents increased 4.1%, while nonresident stays increased 9.8%. Rural tourist accommodation offered 100,610 bedplaces, 8.8% more than in January % of these bedplaces were occupied, representing a 3.4% decrease. Among non-residents, Canarias was the preferred destination. On the other hand, the destinations with the most overnight stays by resident travellers were Castilla y León, Cataluña and Aragón. Canarias reached the highest occupancy rate in rural tourist accommodation in January (with 26.8% of offered bedplaces). It was followed by Comunidad de Madrid (14%) and País Vasco (13.7%). On a tourist area basis, the Cataluña Pyrenees were the preferred destination, with 22,590 overnight stays. Tenerife reached the highest occupancy rate (35.6%). The normal rate, which had the greatest weight in the weight structure for this month (50.4%), increased 2.5%. By rent modality, complete use, with a weighting of 70.3%, recorded an interannual increase of 3.9%. 4

5 Evolution of travellers and overnight stays in all Spanish collective tourist accommodation Overnight stays in all Spanish collective tourist accommodation (hotels, holiday dwellings, campsites and rural tourist accommodation) registered a 1.5% interannual increase in January. Resident overnight stays grew by 0.8% and non-residents by 1.8%. The average stay decreased 1.6%, standing at 3.6 nights per traveller. Canarias was the preferred destination regarding overall Spanish tourist accommodation, with more than 7.5 million overnight stays, 1.1% more than in January It was followed by Andalucía, with more than 2.4 million overnight stays (0.1% less) and Comunitat Valenciana with more than 1.9 million of overnight stays (1.4% more). The preferred destinations of non-residents were Canarias, Andalucía and Comunitat Valenciana. On the other hand, the destinations with the most overnight stays by residents were Andalucía, Cataluña and Comunidad de Madrid.
