5 July 5, 2015 The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time V Dear Brothers and Sisters, MESSAGE FROM MSGR. ART As many of you know, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, will be canonizing the founder of the California Missions during his September pastoral visit to the United States. This long anticipated event is not without its elements of controversy. As we prepare for this important event, I am grateful to my friend, Fr. Thomas Elewaut, who is pastor of Mission San Buenaventura, the ninth Mission Serra founded, for the following fascinating resource that I will be sharing with you for the weekend in July in the bulletin. Interesting Facts about Junipero Serra Did you know that on November 24, 1713, a very tiny, very weak little baby was born in Petra on the island of Mallorca? He was baptized quickly because everyone was afraid he would die. Miguel Jose Serra did grow up to be a small man. But this small man walked thousands of miles through Mexico and the Californias in the service the Church to evangelize the Native Americans. Did you know that when Miguel Jose Serra was fifteen, he was sent to Palma to continue his studies? There he worked hard and lived the life of a Franciscan friar. After two years he joined the order. He took the priestly name of Junípero. He named himself after a friend of St. Francis of Assisi. The original Junípero was a man known as "the clown of God." Did you know that Fray Junipero Serra was a famous teacher (Dr. Serra, or Dr. Junípero was what his students called him at the University)? For several years following his ordination, Serra remained at Palma as both student and teacher. He received a doctorate in theology and served as professor of theology at the Franciscan university in Palma from 1744 to 1749, when he sailed to Cádiz, Spain, to fulfill his lifetime dream of being a missionary. Did you know that when Fray Junipero Serra arrived in Vera Cruz, horses and mules could have taken the missionaries to Mexico City? But Fray Junípero said that he preferred to walk. It was a rule of the Franciscan order that friars could not ride a horse, as it was considered a luxury, unless they were sick or injured. After many days of walking, one of Father Serra s legs became swollen, blistered, and badly infected. Still, he kept walking. To be continued next week. Msgr. Qualifications: Mature adult Catholic over the age of 21 who is fully initiated (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) and is a registered member of the parish. You will be asked to be fingerprinted and you must complete training in safe environment. You will be required to attend training sessions in Eucharistic ministry. Please prepare a written letter introducing yourself and explaining why you would like to be a Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA 14to. Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 5 de Julio, Ciclo B Ezequiel 2:2-5 2Corintios 12,7-10 Marcos 6:1-6 Tema: El Espíritu del Señor esta sobre mí; me ha enviado para anunciar el evangelio a los pobres. Adultos: Cuál es la debilidad con la que batallo aún en aceptar? Niños: Qué es lo que he pedido a Jesús que mejore en mí? MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: A nada que nos paremos a pensar, descubrimos cómo en nuestro interior tendemos a valorar aquello que percibimos como fuerte, poderoso, seguro y, en ello, depositamos nuestra confianza. Una vez más, la dinámica del Reino va por otro camino. Qué casualidad! Las tres lecturas de hoy nos presentan otra manera se situarse en la vida: desde el lugar de los débiles, de los pequeños, de lo insignificante, porque resulta que es ahí donde mejor nos podemos encontrar con el Dios de la vida. Si algo dificultó la fe en Jesús fue precisamente su procedencia humana, para unos seres que seguían buscando a Dios en lo fuerte y en lo extraordinario: No es éste el hijo del carpintero...?. Aceptar esto nos cuesta. Pero... no residen ahí precisamente todas nuestras posibilidades? Porque nosotros también sabemos de nuestra debilidad y pequeñez pe rsonal. La mayoría de nosotros somos gente sencilla, con grandezas y limitaciones. Y es ahí precisamente donde quiere estar el Dios de Jesucristo, no entre los grandes de este mundo, no en el poder y la fuerza, sino presente en nuestra debilidad, para llenarla de vida. Ésta es la Buena Noticia, rubricado por Él con una entrega total. La vida del Carpintero culminó en Resurrección. Creer en la fuerza de lo débil, es entrar en la dinámica del Reino, es acogerlo como camino para encontrar la felicidad del ser humano. DICHOSOS los que no se escandalizan de este Dios! 10 X Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas, Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano Continuará la próxima semana. Como muchos de ustedes saben, nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, canonizará al fundador de las Misiones de California durante su visita pastoral a los Estados Unidos en septiembre. Este acontecimiento no llega sin sus elementos de controversia. Al prepararnos para este importante evento, estoy muy agradecido con mi amigo, el Padre Thomas Elewaut, quien es pastor de la Misión de San Buenaventura, la novena misión que Serra fundó, por el fascinante recurso que compartiré con ustedes los fines de semana de julio en el boletín. Datos interesantes acerca de Junipero Serra Sabías qué el 24 de noviembre de 1713, un bebé muy pequeño y muy débil nació en Petra en la isla de Mallorca? Rápidamente fue bautizado porque todo el mundo temía que muriera. Miguel José Serra creció hasta ser un hombre de baja estatura. Pero este pequeño hombre caminó miles de millas a través de México y las Californias al servicio de la Iglesia para evangelizar a los indios nativos. Sabías qué cuando Miguel José Serra tenía quince años, fue enviado a Palma para continuar sus estudios? Allí trabajó duro y vivió la vida de un fraile franciscano. Después de dos años se unió a la orden. Tomó el nombre sacerdotal de Junípero. Se nombró a sí mismo llevando el nombre de un amigo de San Francisco de Asís. El Junípero original era un hombre conocido como "el payaso de Dios. Sabías qué Fray Junípero Serra fue un famoso profesor (el Dr. Serra, o el Profesor Junípero como sus estudiantes lo llamaban en la Universidad)? Varios años después de su ordenación, Serra permaneció en Palma como estudiante y profesor. Recibió un doctorado en teología y servía como profesor de teología en la Universidad Franciscana de Palma de 1744 a 1749, cuando zarpó para Cádiz, España, a cumplir su sueño de vida, ser un misionero. Sabías qué cuando Fray Junípero Serra llegó a Veracruz, los caballos y mulas podrían haber llevado a los misioneros a la Ciudad de México? Pero Fray Junípero dijo que prefería caminar. Muchos hispanos que vivimos en Estados Unidos somos personas bilingües. Podemos leer la Palabra de Dios en inglés o español. Por ejemplo, el texto de Juan 21:15-19, en el que Jesús le pregunta a Pedro si lo ama. El texto en inglés nos dice que Jesús le pregunta tres veces: Peter, do you love me? Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: Señor, tú sabes que te quiero. La diferencia es casi imperceptible, pero importante. El texto original fue escrito en griego y usaba dos palabras que significan amor, ágape (amor que se sacrifica) y fileo (amor fraterno). En inglés, Jesús y Pedro usan la misma palabra, love, mientras en español Jesús dos veces pregunta por amor, y Pedro responde con querer. La tercera vez, Jesús se acopla a Pedro y sólo pregunta en torno al querer, reconociendo que en ese momento, Pedro no puede darle más que eso. Jesús le asegura que algún día Pedro sería capaz del amor ágape entregando su vida por él.
