In U3.E2 we learned that some verbs have a special spelling change in the conjugation of the verb. These verbs are called stem-changing verbs because the spelling change occurs in the stem, or root, of the verb-(the part that remains when you take off the infinitive ending). You may also have learned them as boot or shoe verbs. Sound familiar? One such change is that the letter u changes to ue in the verb JUGAR to play (sports). Here is the conjugation: juego juegas juega *jugamos * jugáis juegan
22 **Do you notice that the nosotros and vosotros forms do not change u---ue?? That is because these two subjects NEVER have a stem change! The other kind of stem-changing verb that we learned in U3.2 is the group of verbs that changes from e to ie in the following list of infinitives: cerrar - to close empezar to start, to begin entender to understand merendar to have a snack perder to lose preferir to prefer querer to want Some of the above verbs have more than one e in the stem (entender, merendar ). In these verbs, stem change the e closest to (but not including) the infinitive ending. Notice the spelling/stem change in the conjugation of the verb PERDER: pierdo pierdes pierde *perdemos *perdéis pierden **Again, notice that the nosotros and vosotros forms do not have a stem-change!! A. Now, let s practice. Write the correct form of the following stem-changing verbs. 1. Yo ir a España en junio. (pensar) 2. Gerardo no trabajar esta noche. (querer) 3. Mis amigos las mochilas antes de salir de la clase. (cerrar) 4. A qué hora tú a estudiar cada noche? (empezar) 5. Anita al baloncesto en el equipo de la escuela. (jugar) 6. Answer key: 1. pienso 5. juega 2. quiere 6. preferimos 3. cierran 7. meriendo 4. empiezas 8. pierden U SABER = TO KNOW FACTS, INFORMATION Also in U3.2, we learned that the verb SABER has an irregular yo form. Here is the conjugation: yo sé nosotros sabemos
23 tú sabes vosotros sabéis él, ella, Ud. sabe ellos, ellas, uds. saben Notice the irregular yo form!! ** Yo sé las respuestas en clase. I know the answers in class. ** Sabes tú la fecha de hoy? Do you know today s date? ** Juan no sabe dónde vive su amigo. Juan doesn t know where his friend lives. When the conjugated verb saber is used with an infinitive, it expresses the idea To Know How to **I know how to swim well. Yo sé nadar bien. **Do you know how to play soccer? -- Sabes jugar al fútbol? **My brother knows how to ski. Mi hermano sabe esquíar. B. Now you try. Escribe las ideas en español. 1. U3.3 --Present Progressive The present progressive is formed by combining the verb "to be" with the present participle. (The present participle is merely the "-ing" form of a verb.) I am studying. I am studying with María. In English, present progressive can be used to describe what is happening now, or what will happen in the future. I am studying now. I am studying with María tonight.
24 In Spanish, the present progressive is only used to describe an action that is in the process of taking place. It is not used for future actions. I am studying now. (use present progressive) I am studying with María tonight. (do not use present progressive) To form the present progressive in Spanish, combine a form of "estar" with the present participle. Estoy hablando. I am speaking. Juan está comiendo. John is eating. María está escribiendo una carta. Mary is writing a letter. In order to form the present progressive, you must know how to conjugate the verb estar, and how to form the present participle. You already know how to conjugate the verb estar: estar estoy estás está
