3 PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Dear Parishioners: Some historians believe that the month of January was named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and ends, gates and passages, time and change. Janus has two faces, one looking backward, one looking forward. The face that looks to the past is sometimes depicted without beard but with disappointment. The face that looks to the future seems apprehensive and much older. There were many jani (ceremonial gateways) in Rome. The most famous one was the Janus Geminus, which was actually a shrine that Numa Pompilius (the second king of Rome) built for Janus, at the north side of the Roman Forum. It was a simple rectangular structure with bronze doors on the east and the west sides. The Romans superstitiously believed that if their army didn t exit the city ritually through these doors, they would not be protected by Janus, and would end up in a defeat. Traditionally, these doors were left open in time of war and kept closed when Rome was at peace. But, since the Romans seemed to always be at war somewhere, these doors were closed only twice in the 700-year history of the republic. Janus s job was to keep evil spirits out of every building in Rome. His name was invoked at the beginning of every ritual, every meal, and every month. Naturally, he played a big role in the Roman new year celebration. Each year, on the first day of the month of January, people exchanged presents in his honor. The Church, however, dedicates New Year s Day to honor the Blessed Mother and to pray for world peace. With the Mother of God watching over us, we don t have to superstitiously pass through Janus s doors for protection. Instead of looking back with disappointment, let us give thanks for all that has been. And rather than looking forward with apprehension, let us welcome the new year with hope. May God bless each one of us abundantly this New Year s Day and beyond! Fr. Vincentius Do, Pastor NEW YEAR S DAY On New Year s Day, January 1, our rectory will be closed, and our Mass schedule will be: 9:00 AM (English), 10:30 AM (Spanish), 12:15 PM (Chinese). Please plan to join us at one of these Masses to pray for the New Year. Beside the Christmas trees and wreaths that lit up our property every night since the beginning of December, our church looked especially beautiful at Christmas time. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Kevin Chen, Felipe Gonzalez, Rafael Rodriguez, Vincent Estevez, Antonio Bubbico, and everyone who helped getting our church ready for Christmas. Their selfless dedication truly shows forth the Spirit of Christmas! FIRST THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY DEVOTIONS This Thursday, January 4, at 11:00 AM, our Chinese parishioners will observe a Holy Hour in the Convent Chapel. On Friday, January 5, our Spanish-speaking parishioners will stay in the Upper Church from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM to adore the Blessed Sacrament. On Saturday, January 6, our English-speaking parishioners will have a First Saturday Devotion after the 8:45 AM Mass in the Convent Chapel. All are invited to our three days of devotions. HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS Our Parish Vocation Committee will hold a Holy Hour to pray for vocations on Monday, January 8, at 7:00 PM in the Upper Church. All are invited.

5 PERSPECTIVA DEL PÁRROCO Queridos feligreses: Algunos historiadores creen que el mes de enero fue nombrado despue s de Janus, el dios romano de los comienzos y los fines, las puertas y los pasajes, el tiempo y el cambio. Janus tiene dos caras, una mirando hacia atra s, una mirando hacia adelante. La cara que mira al pasado a veces se representa sin barba, pero con decepcio n. La cara que mira hacia el futuro parece aprensiva y mucho ma s antigua. Había muchos jani (portales ceremoniales) en Roma. El viernes, 5 de enero, nuestros feligreses hispanos se quedan todo el día en la iglesia de arriba para adorar el Santísimo Sacramento.
