2 JUDY'S NOTEBOOK: OPPORTUNITY NATION 0> PBS NEWSHOUR Tw t ' 0 I:l submit If you're down in the dumps and in need of something to lift your spirits, tune in to the work being highlighted this week at the OppOrtunity Nation Summit. The word "opportunity" has been used and abused for as long as 1can remember, but in this case it rings true. The summit is a gathering of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds from au over the country, and adults representing some 250 organizations are dedicated to matching them up with schooling and a job to help them realize their dreams. Often heard around the summit, held in Washington, DC this year, was the phrase: "You're not defined by your zip code." If you had dropped by Lisner Auditorium at George Washington Universi ty Wednesday, you would have run into the likes of Dorothy Stoneman, passionate founder of Youth BUild, Inc. in 1978, and every bit as energetic and committed to the cause of finding a place in American society for disconnected youth toda y as she was )4 years ago. Having expanded into 27) communities across the nation, Stoneman speaks with urgency about the 6.7 miuion young people today, ages 16 to 24, who are not in school or employed. She and the other leaders at the summit cite a statistic that's tough to hear in the country we au love so much : Today, only six percent of children born to parents at the bottom of the income scale make it to the top. The reality is made worse, they say, "by the fact that nearly two"thirds of the jobs in today's economy are middle- and high-skiu positions, and the American workforce has fewer than half the number of qualified candidates needed to fiu those posi tions." The organizers are in a hurry to do something to change this, and they brought together young people with adults in positions to help: politicians from Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio to Iowa Democratic Senator Tom Harkin; educators like Dr. Eduardo Padron, president of Miami Dade CoUege and Dr. Diana Natalicio, president of the University of Texas at Et Paso; and business people like David Nagel, executive vice president of BP North America (also active in the Boy Scouts), Meg Garlinghouse of Linkedln and Cheryl Oldham of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. I was pri vileged to take part in a discussion with these business representatives, who told the young audience what their companies and organizations are doing to bring more "disconnected" young people into their midst. They talked about the skills gap and urged the audience to spread the word that openings exist. The youthful audience seemed to be au ears, given the latest unemployment report showing more than ZZ percent of 16 to 19 year olds are unemployed, while figures for African-American and Latino youth are even higher. As Opportunity Nation seeks "to rebuild the ladder of economic mobility in America," it's remarkable to see that a recent survey of young oeople facing tough challenges to forward advancement are optimistic about their future. Almost three in four said they are very confident that they will be able to achieve their goals In life. If these young Americans, who have faced serious obstacles such as broken families and hardships in getting an education, are hopeful -- how can the rest of us let them down? : SUPPORT,YOUR,9> ~ ;'LOCAl STATION MORE STORIES WS KG-TV Public File - WS KA PubliC File - Contact Us wvv. wskg. org/pbs/judys-notebook-{)ppo rtunty-naton 1/1

Both began operations with modest offerings but both have grown to become indispensable to Manatee County. Forty years after its first delivery of only a dozen meals to the homebound, disabled and elderly, Meals on Wheels today sends out about 1,100 meals daily -- just one of its missions. The nonprofit agency also operates the Food Bank of Manatee, Renaissance on 9th, Daybreak Adult Day Center and Senior Wheels. 15 N WS ERALo' com All ages drop in for acting, dance, circus classes TONY SIMMONS I PanamaCitycom PANAMA CITY - The Rehearsal Room was created for the people who want to learn to dance, but don't want to demonstrate their talent for the public. "I performed in New York for many years, and I got this idea of opening a studio with a drop-in policy," owner Lauren Kolmetz said. "There are no recitals, no contracts, just come and learn techniques and have fun." In addition to the typical dance courses such as tap, jazz and ballet, The Rehearsal Room has a unique program including acting for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, musical theater for k-8, body conditioning, Zumba and Circus Skills. "I want (people to know) there are classes out here for them, even if they don't want to perform on stage but just always wanted to learn," Kolmetz said. "That's what our program is." Each class is $10 (or less if you pay for a month in advance). For a schedule and rates, visit the TheRehearsalRoom PC.com. Kolmetz has been dancing since age 4. A Panama City native with a degree in theater from the University of South Florida, she moved to New York City after college and performed with (and taught for) Project Dance in Times Square. She also garnered some TV and film credits with "Law & Order," "Hope & Faith, " "The Stepford Wives" and "The Producers," among others. "I trained at the Broadway Dance Center," she added. "We moved back to Panama City after our son was born." Kolmetz does dance therapy at Pediatrics Plus and teaches dance at Gulf Coast State College, where she choreographed "Guys & Dolls," "Into the Woods" and "Annie." She also is artistic director of Redeemer Dance Co., a group that performs at festivals, schools, parades and other events. The acting and theater classes are taught by Kayla May, a recent graduate of the musical theater program at GCSC, who starred in "Guys & Dolls" and danced to Kolmetz's choreography. She has performed in lead roles with Shakespeare by the Bay, The Martin Ensemble Theatre and other GCSC productions. May said not to judge her classes by their titles, because there is much more to it than acting. "I hope to teach my kids the ins and outs of everything theater-related: acting, makeup, design, people, history, etc.," she said. "It's the same for musical theatre: reading music, learning parts, working together as an ensemble to produce something magical- everything I fell in love with as a student." Classes are ongoing, so there is no limit to what students can learn and no worries about dropping in. May added that her classes fill an important need, as many schools are reducing drama and arts-related courses. "I want them to be fully equipped when they enter high school and begin auditioning for shows and competing," she said. "But beyond that, I want them to audition for the local theaters, and because of their skill and education in these arts, the directors will as k them, 'You took classes at The Rehearsal Room, didn't you?'
