2 PÁGINA: 2 de 5 CONCEPTUALIZACIÓN CONCEPTO WHAT TIME IS IT? La hora en inglés se dice de forma distinta que en español. Primero se colocan los minutos y al final las horas. El comienzo ("It is" o "It s" = Son ) ha de ir siempre para indicar cualquier hora. Cuando se trata de una hora en punto, la estructura es siempre la misma: It is eleven o'clock (lo subrayado se puede eliminar) = "Son las 11". Los cuartos de hora se expresan con las palabras "a quarter". Ej.: It's a quarter... ten (en los puntos suspensivos habrá que colocar bien la palabra TO (para) o bien la palabra "PAST" (pasada) IT'S A QUARTER TO TEN : Son un cuarto para las 10 IT'S A QUARTER PAST TEN : Son las 10 y cuarto. Para decir la hora y media se utiliza la siguiente expresión: "IT'S HALF PAST TEN" = "Son las 10 y media". El esquema general para indicar la hora en inglés podría ser el siguiente: IT'S + MINUTOS + PAST / TO + HORA Hay que tener en cuenta que el número de minutos nunca sobrepasará de 29, pues 30 se dice "half" y 15 se dice "a quarter". Ej.: "It's ten to nine" (Son las nueve menos diez); "It's five past twelve" ("Son las doce y cinco"); "It's half past ten" ("Son las diez y media"). "It's" se traduce siempre como "Son". Para preguntar la hora se emplean las siguientes expresiones: "What is the time?" / "What time is it?" = Qué hora es? Otro vocabulario básico relativo a las horas es el siguiente: MINUTE (minuto), SECOND (segundo), MIDDAY (mediodía), MIDNIGHT (medianoche), a.m. = in the morning (por / de la mañana), p.m. = in the afternoon (por / de la tarde-por la noche) Nota: La manera mas usual de decir la hora es como lo hacemos nosotros normalmente: 11:15---It s eleven fifteen 12:30---It s twelve thirty 2:45----It s two forty-five 5:50----It s five fifty 6:10----It s six ten

3 PÁGINA: 3 de 5 CARACTERISTICAS Se utiliza 'a.m.' y 'p.m.' en un lenguaje más formal y normalmente escrito. Ej. Banks are open from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Es más normal decir: 'In the morning', 'In the afternoon', 'In the evening', 'At night' 7:00 a.m. = It s seven o'clock in the morning. 2:15 p.m. =It s a quarter past two in the afternoon.7:30 p.m. = It s half past seven in the evening11:00 p.m. = It s eleven o'clock at night 12:00 = midday 24:00 = midnight ACTIVIDADES DE APROPIACIÓN 1.- Escríbe la hora para cada reloj, siguiendo el ejemplo 2.
