3 Shape the Future REGISTRATION IS EASY! Register to vote at any time, but no later than 15 days prior to an election to be eligible to vote in that election. You need to re-register when you move, change your name, or wish to change your political party affiliation. You may register your affiliation with any qualified political party, or none at all (Decline to State). Voter registration forms are available at the following locations: The Registration and Elections Office, offices in the County Center, U.S. Post Offices, City Halls, Public Libraries, Colleges, Department of Motor Vehicles. A full list of locations and their addresses can be found on our website at You may also call our office at WHAT ELECTION MATERIALS WILL I RECEIVE? 1. Voter Notification Card a postcard will be sent to you confirming your registration. 2. Sample Ballot & Voter Information Pamphlet starting approximately six weeks before Election Day, the San Mateo County Elections Office mails you a Sample Ballot & Voter Information Pamphlet containing information about local candidates and issues on your ballot. 3. State of California Official Voter Information Guide for statewide elections (in even numbered years), the Secretary of State sends you a booklet (one per household) describing state candidates for office as well as state propositions on your ballot. San Mateo County is subject to federally mandated minority language requirements with respect to persons whose primary language is Spanish or Chinese. Results of the 2000 Census showed that San Mateo County has a significant number of voting age citizens of two single-language minority groups who may have limited English proficiency. Information and materials pertaining to elections are now provided in Spanish and Chinese languages, in addition to English, to assist voters in effectively participating in the political process. Please call our office at SMC.VOTE ( ) for information in Spanish or Chinese and also to request election materials in these languages. YOU HAVE THREE OPTIONS TO CAST YOUR BALLOT: 1. VOTE AT YOUR POLLING PLACE ON ELECTION DAY You may vote at your polling place between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. The location of your polling place may change from one election to another. To find the address of your polling place, look on the back cover of your San Mateo County Sample Ballot Pamphlet, call our office at , check our website at or in countywide elections, the website maintained by the League of Women Voters at 2. VOTE AT THE COUNTY ELECTIONS OFFICE You may vote at the County Elections Office located at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo, Monday through Friday during normal business hours beginning the 29th day prior to an election and through Election Day until 8:00 p.m. For directions to our office, call us at VOTE BY MAIL If you are unable to vote at your polling place on Election Day, you can vote by mail. Complete the absentee ballot application provided on the back cover of your Sample Ballot Pamphlet. The application must be received by the San Mateo County Elections Office no later than 7 days prior to the election. PERMANENT ABSENTEE VOTER STATUS Any registered voter may now apply for permanent absentee voter status. As a permanent absentee voter, you will automatically receive your ballot by mail within the 29 days preceding any election in which you are eligible to vote. You can remain a permanent absentee voter as long as you wish. However, if you fail to vote in a statewide election, you lose your permanent absentee voter status (not your voter registration) and you will need to re-apply. VOTING ASSISTANCE Anyone may request assistance at the polling place. From helping to read or understand the ballot, to making sure choices are indicated accurately, the Election Officials are there to assist. A voter may have up to two people present to help with voting. By law, you cannot receive such assistance from your employer, your labor union officials, or anyone working on behalf of either. If you are not physically able to enter the polling room, ask an Election Official for curbside voting. The official will bring the voting materials to you, whether you are actually at a curb, in a car, or otherwise outside the voting area. YOU CAN PLAY A BIGGER ROLE JOIN THE ELECTIONS TEAM! We are always looking for people to lend a hand at our polling places. As an Election Officer, you will serve your community and play a vital role in making democracy work. Depending on the assignment, the stipend provided is $80 or $125. You will receive $25 more when you attend a training class and serve on Election Day.
