2 PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Dear Parishioners: On the street I saw a small girl, cold and shivering in a thin dress, with little hope of a decent meal. I became angry and said to God: Why did you permit this? Why don t you do something about it? For a while God said nothing. That night He replied, quite suddenly: I certainly did something about it. I made you. This short but poignant story has been passed around the internet for some time. It could be the story of any one of us. When we see something we don t like, our tendency is to complain. But this story reminds us that, rather than complaining, we could do something about it. It is always better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. To help us do something this Lent, I have extended an invitation to Fr. Jerome Hackenmueller to visit our parish next weekend. Fr. Jerry has been a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota since Throughout most of his priesthood, he has served as a pastor at different parishes in his diocese. But, for 11 years, he was in Venezuela. He especially values his time in Latin America and his work with Spanish-speaking communities in Minnesota. Fr. Jerry will speak at all our Masses next weekend about the work of UNBOUND, and how it provides a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor. Founded by lay Catholics, UNBOUND is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth, and elderly in 20 developing countries since UNBOUND s unique sponsorship program is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the U.S. who cares about and encourages that person. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps provide much-needed nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for families and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the dignity of every person in their local community. In his letter to me, Fr. Jerry said he is delighted to connect us with the children and elders in desperate need. He hopes that, through our participation in UNBOUND s educational sponsorship, we will help to unbind people from the cycle of poverty and give them a new lease on life. Fr. Me enojé y le dije a Dios: Por qué permites esto? Por qué no haces algo al respecto? Por un tiempo Dios no dijo nada. Esa noche respondió, repentinamente: Ciertamente hice algo al respecto. Yo te hice. Esta historia corta pero conmovedora se ha transmitido por Internet durante algún tiempo. Podría ser la historia de cualquiera de nosotros. Cuando vemos algo que no nos gusta, nuestra tendencia es quejarse. Pero esta historia nos recuerda que, en lugar de quejarnos, podríamos hacer algo al respecto.
