3 Thoughts from Fr. Stephen Forrest... Commandments Not Just Set in Stone? Even though Moses came down the mountain with the Ten Commandments on tablets of stone, I am sure that neither he nor God wanted them to stay there. In fact when we read the prophet Jeremiah we are reminded that God wanted His law written on our hearts. What Jesus leads us into is a renewed look at these ancient commands, reminding us that they become part our hearts when we keep them, when we live them. Of all of the commandments that Jesus mentions in today s Gospel I suppose that most of us could say, well, I never steal, haven t killed anyone, in fact, if I just stayed at home the whole day and kept to myself, these commandments are relatively easy. I really don t have to do anything! An older priest once told me that with many of the commandments what you do is turn them around, make them positive and see if you are following the commandments: So you shall not kill becomes, did I promote life? Am I able to see the life and love around me or do I kill the spirit of life and fun in others? Do I enjoy others success? You shall not commit adultery becomes, do I see others as a child of God and equally created with all others? Or do I see them as someone to take advantage of? You shall not steal becomes, the ability to give of ourselves and see all that we have as gifts and not our property. You shall not bear false witness becomes, a desire to see the good in others and ourselves, to want to help them in their struggles even if they are not as perfect as me. You shall not defraud becomes an ability to see that all that others have are gifts from God and not their property to be taken. Finally to honor your father and your mother becomes a desire to live in a right and good relationship with others and our creator. What Jesus ultimately demands is that we put God back into all that we do and live in loving relationship with others and God. M i s s i o n S t a t e m e n t / M i s i ó n Our aim as Church is to grow in the love of Christ and witness to His Gospel.

5 Saint Mark School News The weather certainly tells us autumn is here. Fall jackets and even gloves are being searched for in the early mornings. Meanwhile, inside our school student s progress in their growth. Our all-school Mass was outstanding in its simplicity as we gathered together to hear God's word and celebrate Eucharist with Fr. Stephen. Thank you to our choir leaders who lead us in this prayer. Our Student Council held its first meeting and brainstormed ideas on how they have an effect in the world around them. Thirty-five ideas surfaced as Kindergarteners through Fifth Graders looked at issues of environment, community and service to those around us. Thank you to the executive committee of the council, which reviewed the ideas and will present a report on major ideas to be considered this year. One project voted in was participating in the 7th Annual PB & J Challenger held from October 5-30, 2009 and sponsored by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2009 Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin program. Peanut butter and jelly donations in plastic jars (to avoid breakage) are being collected. Three years ago, we were recognized as the school that collected the most poundage per student in our area. Last year, we were second place winners. Really, the winners are the students who enjoy these products as we work together to combat hunger. Won't you join us in this venture? Just drop off your contributions of peanut butter or jelly in our school office. Our student council membership and their officers will take it from there. We are grateful for your help. We also join our parish family in collecting food items for the Thanksgiving baskets that will be prepared in November. Working with our parish family and others gives us a global approach to problems. Thank you for your kindness. Meanwhile, we continue to collect Box tops for Education, Campbell s Soup Labels, milk caps, and many other items to continue updating our learning materials. Please continue collecting these items, and give to any St. Mark student or drop in the boxes near our Hospitality Room in back of church. Our collection for gifts donated to our Technology Fund continues to grow. Thank you to so many who have given. A matching gift will look at what we have collected up to and including December 31, Won't you or any of your friends consider a donation, large or small, to this fund? These gifts will carry us far into the future with our technological needs. Again, we are most grateful. Have a wonderful week. Hope to see you at our Special Person's Day this coming Tuesday. All are welcomed to join us from 8 until 12. See education at its finest, hospitality at its best, and prayer with Mass at 11. Stop in and see our school family at work. Parish Evangelization "There are no strangers here only friends we haven't met." What is more important to you than anything else? For the young man in today s Gospel, it was his possessions. He knew and followed the commandments and wanted to inherit eternal life. But not if it meant giving up what he owned, which is exactly what it did mean in his case. Jesus demands a lot from his followers. In fact, he demands everything! If we wish to follow Jesus fully, then Jesus must be the most important thing in our lives. If family, career or even other noble ideals are more important to me than Jesus, then that other thing is my God, and not Jesus. Jesus calls each of us, as an evangelizer, to examine our lives and let go of anything that is more important to us than He is. Such things may differ from person to person, but the call to follow Jesus at all cost remains the same for each of us. When Jesus is the most important thing in our lives, all else follows in proper order to his greater Glory! This week, spend some time evangelizing your own heart and renewing your relationship with God. Remember, for our Lord, There are no strangers here only friends we haven t met.
