Saint Paul tells the Corinthians that he was given a thorn in the flesh. Scripture scholars have debated just what this thorn really was. Perhaps it is best that we do not know exactly, for each of us has our own thorn in the flesh. It may be chronic illness, a fractured relationship, deep disappointment, unemployment, or any number of things. It is Paul s attitude that we are called to emulate. When we are tempted to groan or complain about our own thorns in the flesh, let us remember that it is in weakness that we are made strong. This is a central paradox of the Christian life, one that is difficult to live. May Saint Paul intercede on our behalf so that we will be strengthened in faith, even in our weakness. San Pablo le dice a los corintios tengo una espina clavada en mi carne. Los eruditos de las Escrituras han discutido acerca de que era esa espina. Tal vez sea mejor que no lo sepamos, ya que cada uno de nosotros tenemos nuestra propia espina clavada en nuestra carne. A parish pastoral council is the chief consultative body to the pastor. Consultation is a sharing of wisdom that enables the parish to carry out its mission. The pastoral council discerns issues that impact the lives of parishioner, prays, studies, and discusses those issues, and recommends practical ways of addressing them. HOW DOES A PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL OPERATE? A council meets once a month with the pastor to consider pastoral issues. It listens carefully to the concerns of the pastor, the parish staff and others involved in the life of the parish. Through prayer and discernment it searches for the guidance of the holy Spirit and reaches decisions through consensus. Sacred heart of Jesus Parish Pastoral Council meets the second Monday of each month from 7:00pm to 8:30 pm. Regular attendance at meetings is critical. WHO SHOULD BE A MEMBER OF A PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL? A council member should be at least of high school age, prayerful, care about the spiritual well-being of the entire community, be willing to learn about the universal Church, have a sense of mission: to bring Christ to people and people to Christ, and be involved in the life and activities of the parish. A council member must be prepared to make a sincere commitment and attend meetings consistently. ALL THOSE INTERESTED IN SERVING ON OUR PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL! It is necessary to attend the Information Night on Saturday, August 15, at 11:00 am in the Parish Life Center. We anticipate the meeting to last about an hour. It will also be necessary to attend the Parish Pastoral Council Discernment process on Saturday, August 22, from 11:00 a.m. 1:00 pm in the Parish Life Center. Supreme Court Ruling on Marriage: June 26, 2015 The Supreme Court's narrow majority decision today is gravely unjust as it attempts to change the nature of marriage. Mandating marriage redefinition across the country is a tragic error harming the common good and the most vulnerable among us. The ruling does not and cannot change what marriage really is. No one and no court can make what is false true. Marriage is a perennial institution, with deep roots in who we are and in our nation's culture and laws. Marriage is and always will be the union between one man and one woman. This truth is inseparable from the duty to honor the God-given dignity of every human person, to protect the beautiful truth of marriage, which concerns the essential well-being of the nation, especially children. Children have a basic right, wherever possible, to know and be loved by their mother and father together. The law has a duty to support every child in this most basic right. With renewed purpose, we call upon all people of good will to promote and defend marriage as the union of one man and one woman for life. The redefinition of legal marriage to include any other type of relationship has serious consequences, especially for religious freedom. Our Church will continue its efforts to support public policy issues, including a version of the marriage and religious freedom act, which would prohibit the government from discriminating against those who act in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction that marriage is the union between a man and woman. I encourage the faithful of the Archdiocese to move forward with faith, hope, and love: faith in the unchanging truth about marriage, hope that these truths will once again prevail in our society, and love for all our neighbors. Together, we must increase our efforts to strengthen marriages and families and rebuild a marriage culture. And, we shall continue to reach out with love and support to all people, including those who experience same-sex attraction knowing that all people are loved by God and are called to love Him. Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Community we need your help Once again the youth of this parish are preparing to go to AYC July 31--August 2. It is a 3 day conference for all high school youth put on by the Archdiocese of Galveston- Houston. It is a chance for the youth to learn more about their faith, grow in their relationship with Christ, and to meet other young people that share our same faith around the Galveston-Houston area. The cost for the conference is $250 per youth and adult chaperone. Our goal is to take 100 of our youth, but they can t go without your help. Prayerfully consider sponsoring a complete youth registration or just a donation. Every little bit will help.
