1 1 Spanish American Literature 20 th -21 st SPAN TR 2:30-3:50 Fall 2015 Century Dr. Alexandra Perkins Office: GC 411 Office Hours: Mon: 12-1, Tue: 12-1 and 4-5, Wed: 12-1, Thu: 12-1 and by appointment Course Description: This course provides an overview of exemplary texts from Spanish American Literature. Students will examine major periods, trends, and authors from the 20 th and 21 st centuries. Students will approach texts through the lens of otherness ( otredad ). Otherness includes a variety of factors such as race, nationality, gender, sexuality, religion, globalization, cultural hybridity, and others. Students will analyze how these texts work on and against hegemonic frameworks of identity within given time periods in Latin America. The goal of this course is to understand the impact of these works within their own historical framework, while analyzing the impact these texts have in contemporary times. Specifically, we will address the following questions: What is the impact of writing from and creating spaces of otherness? How do we situate these texts within the Latin American literary canon? What resonances do these writings have for contemporary readers? How can we use these texts in contemporary times to address social/political issues? Conducted in Spanish. Essential Learning Outcomes: 1) Critical Thinking: To critically analyze and understand the development of literature in Latin America within the 20 th and 21 st centuries. 2) Inquiry and Analysis: To gain a deep understanding of themes and literary movements, including el modernismo, las vanguardias, el boom, el pos-boom, el posmodernismo and others. 3) Communication: To improve the ability to read, analyze, and discuss complex texts in Spanish. 4) Digital Literacy: To utilize a variety of web-based applications, including websites, blogs, and social media sites to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information. 5) Intercultural Knowledge and Competence: To understand, question, and challenge the relationship between historical/literary texts and contemporary issues. To relate texts to students experiences in the 21 st century. Course Requirements: Must have taken SPAN 3210 or 3212 Required Texts: Arroyo Pizarro, Yolanda. 2 2 Recommended Materials: 1) Supplementary readings posted to Canvas 2) 3) Grade Breakdown: s: 25% Mini-Quizzes 15% Midterm Exam: 25% Creative Final Project: 35% *s: -For homework, students will complete a blog that addresses the reading. Students are first required to look up and discuss basic information about the author of the texts. Then, students will respond to a question/prompt for each class. I will include a few questions/prompts related to the readings for the day, but feel free to go beyond these if they do not address something you find interesting or important in the texts. Each blog entry should be a thoughtful, edited word composition in Spanish. Students will be required to read the blog posts of a few of their classmates. These blogs will serve as a starting point for our discussions. The blog posts are due by 8:00AM on the day of class in order to give the professor and students time to read and reflect on the blogs. Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend class and arrive on time. You have 3 free absences (no explanation, note, etc. needed). After 3 absences, TWO percentage points will be deducted from the final course grade. Each subsequent absence will result in the deduction of TWO further percentage points (of 100 total points). Policy on Online Translators: Use of online translators is NOT ALLOWED. Do not use an online translator for any assignments in class. Using an online translator is equivalent to plagiarism and will be reported as a violation of Academic Integrity, as outlined by Policy 6.33 Academic Integrity.
