Welcome to lesson 2 of the The Spanish Cat Home learning Spanish course. Bienvenidos a la lección dos. The first part of this lesson consists in this audio lesson, and then we have some grammar for you to learn and some written exercises for you to do. The first thing we re going to do today though is learn how to introduce yourself. Buenos días - Good Morning Buenas tardes - Good afternoon. Buenas noches good night. Repite después de mí: buenos días, buenas tardes, buenas noches. Buenos días - Good Morning Buenas tardes - Good afternoon. Buenas noches - good night. Buenos días, buenas tardes, buenas noches. Now, how do you ask how someone is? Cómo estás? - How are you? (informal) Muy bien - very well. Más o menos - more or less. No muy bien - not very well. Repite despues de mi: como estas? Muy bien, mas o menos, no muy bien. Cómo estás? - How are you? (informal) Muy bien - very well. Más o menos - more or less No muy bien - not very well Cómo estás? Muy bien, más o menos, no muy bien. Excelente!
Now, I want you to answer the question. Cómo estás? Now, once you ve answered, you might like to ask the other person how they are. Y tú? Cómo estás? And you, how are you? Repite después de mí: Y tú, cómo estás? OK, now lets put it together. Answer the question then ask how the speaker is. Speaker: Cómo estás? You: y tú, cómo estás? Speaker: Muy bien gracias. Gracias means thankyou in Spanish. OK, so it might be time to explain something here. In Spanish you have both a formal and informal way of addressing people. The informal way of saying you is tu and the formal way is usted. The verb needs to be changed accordingly. Por ejemplo: Cómo estás tú? - how are you? (Informal) Cómo está usted? - how are you (Formal) We don t need to say the tú or usted though, because the change in the verb is enough. OK, let s move on to a few more questions: Cuál es tu nombre? - what is your name? Dónde vives? - where do you live? Dónde trabajas? - where do you work Repite después de mí: Cuál es tu nombre? Dónde vives? Dónde trabajas?
Cuál es tu nombre? - What is your name? Dónde vives? - Where do you live? Dónde trabajas? - Where do you work Cuál es tu nombre? Dónde vives? Dónde trabajas? OK, how do we answer these questions? Mi nombre es Iliana My name is Iliana Yo vivo en Mexico I live in Mexico Yo trabajo en The Spanish Cat I work at The Spanish Cat Repite después de mí: Mi nombre es, Yo vivo en, Yo trabajo en. Mi nombre es - My name is Yo vivo en - I live in Yo trabajo en - I work at Repite después de mí: Mi nombre es, Yo vivo en, Yo trabajo en. Excelente! OK, now we re going to put these questions and answers together. Say the right answer when the question is asked: Cuál es tu nombre? (answer: Mi nombre es ) Dónde vives? (answer: Yo vivo en ) Dónde trabajas? (answer: Yo trabajo en ) OK, now to ask the speaker about themselves, we use: Y tú? - And you? Y tú, cuál es tu nombre? - and you, what is your name?
So, ask the speaker about themselves after answering the questions: Cuál es tu nombre? (Answer: Mi nombre es. Y tú, cuál es tu nombre?) Mi nombre es Iliana. Dónde vives? (answer: Yo vivo en. Y tú, dónde vives?) Yo vivo en México. Dónde trabajas? (answer: Yo trabajo en. Y tú, dónde trabajas?) Yo trabajo en The Spanish Cat. Mucho gusto. Mucho gusto - pleased to meet you. Repite después de mí: Mucho gusto. Mucho gusto. Excellent. Would you like to practice this conversation again? OK, here it goes: Cuál es tu nombre? (Answer: Mi nombre es. Y tú, cuál es tu nombre?) Mi nombre es Iliana. Dónde vives? (answer: Yo vivo en. Y tú, dónde vives?) Yo vivo en México. Dónde trabajas? (answer: Yo trabajo en. Y tú, dónde trabajas?) Yo trabajo en The Spanish Cat. Mucho gusto. (answer: Mucho gusto) OK, you might like to repeat this conversation over again a few times until you can get it right.
Let s learn how to say a few countries in Spanish: United States - Los Estados Unidos. Australia - Australia England - Inglaterra Spain - España Mexico - México Repite después de mí: Los Estados Unidos, Australia, Inglaterra, España, México. Muy bien. Muy bien - Very good. De dónde eres? - Where are you from? Repite después de mí: De dónde eres? De dónde eres? De dónde eres? Yo soy de Los Estados Unidos - I am from the United States. Repite después de mí: yo soy de los Estados Unidos, yo soy de México, yo soy de Australia Muy bien. OK, now answer the question: De dónde eres? (answer: Yo soy de ) Now, ask the person about themselves: Y tú, de dónde eres? - And you, where are you from? Repite después de mí: Y tú, de dónde eres? Y tú, de dónde eres? OK, answer the question and then ask the speaker about themselves: De dónde eres? (answer: Yo soy de. Y tú, de dónde eres?)
Yo soy de España. OK, one last thing and we can have a basic conversation: Adiós - goodbye Nos vemos - see you Hasta luego - See you later Repite después de mí: Adiós, nos vemos, hasta luego, adiós, nos vemos, hasta luego. It doesn t really matter which one of these you use. OK, let s see if we can have a complete conversation now. Answer the questions, and then ask the speaker the same question: Hola. (answer: Hola) Cómo estás? (answer: Y tú, cómo estás?) Muy bien gracias. Cuál es tu nombre? (answer: Mi nombre es. Y tú, cuál es tu nombre?) Mi nombre es Iliana. De dónde eres? (answer: Yo soy de. Y tú, de dónde eres?) Yo soy de Mexico. Dónde vives? (answer: Yo vivo en. Y tú, dónde vives?) Yo vivo en Australia. Dónde trabajas? (answer: Yo trabajo en. Y tú, dónde trabajas?) Yo trabajo en The Spanish Cat. Mucho gusto. (answer: Mucho gusto) Hasta luego.
(answer: Adiós, hasta luego, or nos vemos). Excelente! OK, you re doing really well and starting to learn quite a lot now. The next part of today s lesson is some grammar and a written exercise. Please open the pdf file in the lesson 2 folder and read through it, print it out, and complete the exercises. See you next class. Hasta la próxima clase!
