The "Pennies from Heaven" donations help several Respect Life Groups in Orange County including Obria Medical Clinics (Birth Choice), Mary s Shelter, and other groups. This effort is one substantial way that we can promote a culture of life in our community. These donations also serve as an opportunity for parishioners to participate in formation around life issues and practical efforts to help our neighbors affected by threats to the life and dignity of the human person. This year, like last year, we will be using baby bottles to help in the collection of donations. On Saturday and Sunday September 29 and 30, a week before Pennies from Heaven Weekend, we will pass out baby bottles (one baby bottle per family) after all the Saturday and Sunday Masses including the Spanish and Latin Masses. During the week, we are asking parishioners to put their donations of checks, cash or coins into the baby bottle and return it to any of the Masses on Saturday or Sunday October 6 and 7 Pennies From Heaven Weekend. If you cannot return them at that time, they can be returned to the Parish Office or Sacristy. Please return your bottle, as we will need them for next year s program. THIS WEEKEND SEPT. 8 & 9 Sister Mary Dietz, SSND is with us this weekend to share her missionary story and invite us to partnership in the African ministries of her religious congregation, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. If you are not prepared to respond to her appeal today, please take home the special envelope and drop your contribution in the collection basket next week; checks can be made out to the parish. This is an opportunity for our parish to share in the work of the Church in mission lands. The need is great; please be generous.

7 September 9, 2018 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Religious Education Office Hours Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 1pm VII First Day of Religious Education Classes will be Sunday, September 9th (10:30am) and Monday, September 10th (5:30pm). We will gather in the gym. Parents need to attend, we will have our orientation meeting during your child's class Calendars are available in the Religious Education office if you need an extra copy. Sunday, September 16th is Catechetical Sunday. All catechists will receive a blessing during the 9am and 1pm Mass. All families are welcome to attend. Our parish is in need of parents, grandparents, siblings, young adults and teens who love to work with children. 8 VIII Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano reflection from Bishop Kevin Vann My dear sisters and brothers in the Lord, It is with the utmost sorrow that I write to you in this time of great scandal and tribulation in our Church. Many people in leadership, particularly among the episcopacy, have failed the people of God. There can be no ambiguity about this. As your spiritual father and the shepherd of this Diocese, I have prayed, struggled, and reflected a great deal these past few weeks in order to determine how I can best serve you. The release of the Pennsylvania s Grand Jury report yesterday confirms that we who lead the Church have a great responsibility to take action against a predation that can only be called satanic. After I was appointed to our Diocese I began to meet regularly with our Oversight Review Board, whose charge it is to advise me on matters concerning accusations of sexual abuse of a minor perpetrated by a cleric. Based on the painful experiences in my home Diocese of Springfield, Illinois during Bishop Daniel Ryan s tenure which resulted in a devastating loss of trust, I wanted to take every opportunity to create a truly safe environment, including reviewing allegations involving adults, not just minors. I regularly seek the members of this group to offer their observations and advice on a variety of matters that came to the attention of the Diocese. Their counsel has been invaluable and a great help in dealing with matters of misconduct, regarding both clerical and lay matters. Their membership includes ten lay experts, one priest, and one religious sister. Five diocesan employees also staff the Board, three of whom are clergy and two lay. I am grateful to all of the members for their sage advice and willingness to serve. In addition, I urge anyone who has been a victim of clerical abuse in our Diocese to report the abuse by calling our toll free number: (800) In light of the revelations surrounding Archbishop McCarrick, not to mention the situations in Honduras and Chile, I now know that the review process needs to be expanded to include claims from seminarians and priests so that they, too, are protected from sexual abuse by those in power. Additionally, I will review our process with my leadership team to confirm that it is as robust as possible. Canon law provides for judicial processes to try all clergy, including bishops, who are charged with canonical crimes. Make no mistake, sexual crimes against the faithful are serious violations of Church law. As a canon lawyer, I know also that these canonical processes were strengthened by Pope Francis as recently as It goes without saying that there are civil and criminal recourses, as well. I appreciate the righteous anger expressed toward those who have failed to follow due process and the demands of accountability. I also want to assure you that I am committed to join with my brother bishops to address these failings. A competent independent national investigative body comprised of qualified professionals needs to be created so that if we have systemic issues within our Church, they can be thoroughly reviewed and addressed. I pledge my support to this and will allocate diocesan funds for this purpose. Unequivocally, I join my brother bishops who have already spoken out to identify the root cause as a crisis in holiness. Shepherds who sincerely seek the Lord do not abuse the power that Our Lord has entrusted to them. Those who abuse this holy office fail Christ and his Church. In this difficult time, please join with me to pray that our Church be purified, that all the people who have been wounded by abuse on the part of the clergy experience healing, and that I, along with the rest of Church leadership, act with wisdom, courage, and humility to fulfill the office that the Lord has entrusted to us. On this, the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, I pray that she be consoled to see the truth of these injustices coming to light so that her children may be part of a Church that is worthy of them and of her Son. Toda la liturgia de este domingo está anunciando esta novedad. La palabra mágica puede ser el ÁBRETE del evangelio, expresado de forma diversa en las demás lecturas. Es todo un símbolo para el hombre y la mujer de hoy y para este nuestro mundo, tan encerrado en sí mismo. Y es que resulta que la SOLEDAD se va convirtiendo en el pan nuestro de cada día. Los hombres y las mujeres construyen puentes y autopistas para comunicarse con más rapidez y, al mismo tiempo, el contacto humano, la comunicación cálida, cordial y sincera se hace más difícil: los hombres y las mujeres se sienten extraños unos para otros, unas para otras. Viven más aislados y aisladas, cerrados y cerradas a Dios y a los y las demás. Por eso, cuántos hombres y mujeres necesitan escuchar las palabras de Jesús al sordomudo: ábrete. También a nosotros y a nosotras nos hace una invitación a abrirnos. Cuando actuamos egoístamente, nos alejamos de los demás, nos separamos de la vida y nos encerramos en nosotros mismos, en nostras mismas: éste es el camino de MUERTE, de SOLEDAD. Dios nos quiere ABIERTOS, SOLIDARIOS. Ábrete! Abrámonos!

Las donaciones de"centavos del cielo" ayudan a varios Grupos de Pro-Vida en el condado de Orange incluyendo Obria Clínicas Médicas, Mary's shelter, Horizon y otros grupos. Este esfuerzo es una forma sustancial adonde podemos promover una cultura de vida en nuestra comunidad. Este año, al igual que el año pasado, estaremos utilizando los biberones para ayudar en la recaudación de donaciones. El sábado y el domingo 29 y 30 de septiembre, una semana antes del fin de semana de Centavos del Cielo, pasaremos los biberones (un biberón por familia) después de todas las misas. Durante la semana, estamos pidiendo a los feligreses a poner sus donaciones de cheques, efectivo o monedas en los biberones y devolverlo después de todas las misas del 6 y 7 de octubre Centavos. Si usted no puede regresarlos en ese momento, pueden ser devueltos a la Oficina de la parroquia o la sacristía. Por favor devuelva el biberón, ya que los necesitaremos para el programa del próximo año. ORACIÓN POR LAS FAMILIAS EN LA FRONTERA Y NUESTRA COMUNIDAD INMIGRANTE Únase a nosotros en oración y ayuno en apoyo a los padres e hijos que inhumanamente han sido separados en nuestras fronteras. Todos los jueves por la tarde de este verano a partir del 19 de julio de 6 p.m. a 7 p.m. en el área verde de la puerta lateral de la Basilica sobre la calle Camino Capistrano.
