MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH November 18, 2018 CULTURE OF LIFE AND PRO-LIFE MINISTRY Disciples for Life The St. Mary s Pro-life Ministry will be hosting a 5 week program to teach ways to answer questions regarding the dignity of every human life. Each session will consist of a 30 minute open discussion. The sessions will be held in classroom #10 Monday nights from 7-8pm. Sessions will be on November, 19th and 26th. Pro Life Ministry Meeting The St. Mary Pro-Life Ministry will have a meeting on Monday, Nov. 19, at 6:15 pm (prior to the Disciples for Life series). Please try to attend. Anyone interested in joining the ministry is welcome as well! California s End of Life Option Act & the Courts For over two years LEGAL LIFE DEFENSE FOUNDA- TION has been battling California's assisted suicide law in the courts. In May, 2018, the trial court ruled that the End of Life Option Act was enacted unconstitutionally. It has been reinstated (SB-282) while a few opponents' legal challenges are considered. This would allow facilitation of the death of anyone defined as "terminally ill". The law defines "terminal" as a condition expected to lead to death within 6 months if left untreated. This could include diabetes, high blood pressure, and other treatable conditions; even an infection could be considered "terminal". Here's what you can do to make a difference: 1) Contact Governor Brown to let him know that you think this new law is an affront to human dignity. 2) Contact the Diocese of San Diego, bishops, and other members of the clergy and urge them to RISE UP for the protection of all LIFE. Abortion and Sin A recent poll showed that 52% of those polled believe that abortion is a sin. This is an increase from 49% polled in A small glimmer of hope! 7 November 18, 2018 ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH PAGE 7 Debt Reduc on Campaign In November the SECOND COLLECTION for the Debt Reduction Campaign will be held the third weekend NOVEMBER 17 and 18. Thank you to the parishioners who have been generously donating to pay off our Parish Center debt. We look forward to your continued support. We hope to make a large payment on the principal of the loan in December. Please be sure to use the gray pledge envelopes or the gray boxed "Parish Center" envelopes. The money received in these envelopes is deposited to the Campaign bank account and credited to the donor's pledge balance. All donations not received in the gray envelopes, including online bank payments, must have the identity of the donor and a note to indicate "Parish Center" or "Capital Campaign" to insure that they are deposited and credited correctly. The October mortgage payment of $22,815 consisted of $5,512 applied to principal and $17,303 paid for interest. The current principal balance is $4,152,638. We plan to make a large payment on the principal balance in December to reduce the amount of the monthly interest payments next year. We would appreciate receiving your quarterly and annual donations before we make that December prinicipal payment. If you are behind in paying your pledge donations, please make an effort to "catch up" before the end of the year. 8 PAGE 8 ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH November 18, 2018 Overview As Catholics we often do or say things as a matter of habit and perhaps we may not even know why we are doing them. Some of these are as follows. Why do we make the sign of the cross? Making the sign of the cross is done often and begins with touching the forehead and saying In the name of the Father. Next we move our hand to our chest (or heart) saying And of the Son. Finally, our hand moves (slowly) across the chest from the left shoulder to the right shoulder - as we say And of the Holy Spirit. In doing so, we trace out the cross on our body using the triune formulae in recognition that Jesus died for us on the cross. Take note that when we trace (slowly) from the left shoulder to the right we are also signifying that the Holy Spirit flows between the Father and the Son as we so state in the Creed. Why do we dip our fingers in the Holy Water? Upon entering church, we encounter a Holy Water font. We dip our fingers in the water and make the sign of the cross as discussed above. When we do this - we recall our Baptism using the Holy Water which is a sacramental. Sacramentals are visible sacred signs instituted by the church similar to the sacred seven Sacraments in that they signify spiritual effects through the intercession of the church. They help the faithful to receive the effects of the Sacraments. Why do we light candles or burn incense? This tradition has its roots from the very early Jewish culture. Firstly, when we light a candle it signifies that we are bringing the light (of Jesus) into darkness. Secondly, it signifies that our prayers are being carried to heaven on the smoke. What a beautiful thought! Why do we genuflect or bow when passing the tabernacle? The tabernacle contains the consecrated hosts of the Body and Blood of Jesus and is usually found at or near the main sanctuary (just look for the red candle). A genuflection is a slight bending of the knee. When we genuflect or bow passing the tabernacle we are recognizing that Jesus is truly God and is truly present in the tabernacle Body and Blood. It is a sign of profound respect and devotion to God. In a like manner we bow before receiving the Eucharist during mass from the priest or minister. Why do we wear medals? There are many types of religious medals which we call Sacramentals. Medals are not good luck charms and do not necessarily prevent you from any physical harm. However, if they are blessed they can offer spiritual protection. Why do we fast or abstain? Catholic 101 Why do we do that? - Por qué lo hacemos? Fasting and abstinence are usually linked together but are quite different. When we fast we reduce the amount of food we eat. When we abstain - such as from meat on Friday during Lent - we do not partake of that food at all. In both instances they are a sacrifice in honor of God s love for us. When we deprive the body of these foods it promotes discipline and in a special way it opens us more fully to the Holy Spirit. Los Sacramentales son signos sagrados visibles instituidos por la iglesia, similar a los siete sacramentos sagrados, en que ellos significan efectos espirituales a través de la intercesión de la iglesia. Ayudan a los fieles a recibir los efectos de los sacramentos. Por qué encendemos velas o quemamos incienso? Esta tradición tiene sus raices desde la cultura Judia primitiva. Primeramente, cuando encendemos una vela significa que estamos trayendo la luz (de Jesús) a la oscuridad. Segundamente, significa que nuestras oraciones son llevadas al cielo en el humo. Qué pensamiento tan bello! Por qué hacemos una genuflexión o nos inclinamos cuando pasamos por el tabernáculo? El tabernáculo contiene las hostias consagradas del Cuerpo y Sangre de Jesús y usualmente se encuentra en o cerca del santuario principal (solo busque la vela roja). Una genuflexión es doblar la rodilla brevemente. Cuando hacemos la genuflexión o nos inclinamos al pasar por el tabernáculo estamos reconociendo que Jesús es verdadero Dios y está realmente presente en el tabernáculo El Cuerpo y la Sangre. Es una señal de profundo respeto y devoción a Dios. De la misma manera cuando nos inclinamos antes de recibir la Eucaristía durante la misa del sacerdote o ministro. Por qué usamos medallas? Hay muchos tipos de medallas religiosas las cuales son llamadas Sacramentales. Las medallas no son amuletos de buena suerte y no necesariamente nos previenen de algún daño físico.
