To tell the time in Spanish is a little more complicated. For midnight or noon, you begin with es. es el mediodía - it's noon es la medianoche - it's midnight For any time that begins with one o'clock, you begin with es. Let's look at some examples: es la una menos cuarto - it's fifteen til one es la una menos veinte - it's twenety til one es la una - it's one o clock es la una en punto - it's one o clock sharp es la una y cuarto - it's one fifteen es la una y veinte - it's one twenty es la una y media - it's one thirty For other times, you begin with son. son las dos 2:00 - it's two o clock son las cinco 5:00 - it's five o clock son las cinco en punto 5:00 - it's five o clock sharp son las cinco y cuarto 5: it's five fifteen son las seis menos cuarto - it's fifteen til six son las tres menos cinco - it's five til three son las tres y veinticinco - it's three twentyfive son las cinco menos ocho - it's eight til five son las ocho y veintidós - it's eight twenty-two son las cinco y media - it's five thirty

2 To be more precise, you may express if you are referring to the early morning, morning, afternoon or evening. son las dos de la madrugada - it's two o clock in the early morning son las siete de la mañana - it's seven o clock in the morning son las cinco de la tarde - it's five o clock in the afternoon son las ocho y media de la noche - it's eight thrity in the evening Half Hour and Quarter Hour - Vocabulary in Spanish There are a couple differences between Spanish and English. To say the half hour in English we say thirty, but never in Spanish. What might be 5:30 in Spanish - becomes cinco y media. You literally say half (media). For the quarter hours you can say, 15 (quince) or 45 (cuarenta y cinco). So, 5:15 is cinco y quince or 5:45 is cinco y cuarenta y cinco. You can also use, quarter cuarto, for example cinco y cuarto (5:15) or sies menos cuarto (5:45). Use Menos to Tell Time in Spanish One of the differences in telling time in Spanish is the use of menos. In English you would say "It is ten before six," or more normally, 5:50. In Spanish you would say, "Son las sies menos diez." Using menos for the latter half of the hour is important as it is used much more in Spanish than in English. You would be understood if you simply said the time in numbers, but to understand others, you should practice this. Also in Spanish, unless it is 1 o'clock, say "son las" and the time. If it is 1:00, you say "es la una" and then the minutes. In English where you say the time directly, 5:12, in Spanish you must always say "and." Son las cinco y doce.

3 Conversation Examples Using Time in Spanish Here are some examples in common usage: Normalmente me levanto a las siete. Normally I get up at 7. Son las diez y diez. It's 10:10. Vamos a comer a la una y media. Let's have lunch at 1:30 Son las cinco y veinte. It's 5:20 Son las ocho menos veinte. It's 7:40. Son las ocho y cinco. It is 8:05. Voy al cine a las cinco menos cuarto. I'm going to the movies at 4:45. Es la una y cuarto. It's 1:15.
