3 9. Get your facts straight a. Hay más cultura en San Juan que en Milwaukee. (What?!) b. Hay más personas en San Juan que en Milwaukee. (Oh, really? How many, then?) c. Go to San Juan because: Hay mucha cultura allí. (What does that mean?) 10. Verbs a. Tener vs. Haber b. Tener = to have something i. I have enough money. = Yo tengo bastante dinero. c. Haber = to have done something i. I have earned enough money. = Yo he ganado bastante dinero. ii. He has won a free trip. = Él ha ganado un viaje gratis. (NOT Él tiene ganar un viaje gratis. ) d. Divertirse = to have fun i. I have fun in San Juan. = Yo me divierto en San Juan. (NOT Yo tengo divertido en San Juan. ) ( Divertido(a) is an adjective not a noun.) ii. San Juan has many fun things to do. = San Juan tiene muchas diversiones que hacer. ( La diversión is a noun.) 3
4 11. Adjectives a. Free i. Gratis = free of charge 1. This meal is free. = Esta comida es gratis. ii. Libre = free from restrictions 1. We are free to go do waterskiing. = Estamos libres para hacer el esquí acuático. 12. Capitalization a. Titles that use nouns and adjectives: i. In a title in Spanish, normally only the first word is capitalized. ii. However, names are also capitalized. Other proper nouns are not. iii. El viaje a San Juan iv. El viaje a otra ciudad donde se habla español v. El viaje a una ciudad en México vi. El viaje a una ciudad mexicana 13. Word choices a. When in doubt, use a dictionary! Go to Merriam-Webster s free online dictionary at the links page on my website. Keep a separate window open so you have quick and easy access to the dictionary at any time. 4
5 b. Another = otro(a) i. I want to take another trip. = Quiero tomar otro viaje. (NOT un otro viaje. ) c. Other = otro(a) i. I have taken other trips to Mexico. = He tomado otros viajes a México. d. El dolor = pain i. I have a headache. = Tengo dolor de cabeza. e. El dólar = dollar i. I have a dollar and fifty cents. = Tengo un dólar y cincuenta centavos. f. Works Cited = Obras Citadas g. Travel company = la compañía de viaje h. Travel companion = el compañero / la compañera de viaje 14. Future tense a. Present tense + adverb: i. I am going to the park tomorrow. = Voy al parque mañana. b. Ir + a + inf.: i. I am going to go to the park tomorrow. = Voy a ir al parque mañana. ii. I am going to eat dinner at six. = Voy a cenar a las seis. 5
6 c. Future endings i. I will go to the park tomorrow. = Yo iré al parque mañana. ii. I will eat dinner at six. = Yo cenaré a las seis. 15. Other errors a. Chewing gum while presenting over the headphones. b. Mispronouncing words new to you, especially names of people and places. c. My name is. = Yo me llamo. (NOT Me llamo es. ) d. My name is. = Mi nombre es. e. State the exchange rate i. $1 (EEUU) = en el país de ii. What symbol do they use for their money? (For example, Mexico uses N$5.00 for cinco nuevos pesos. ) f.
