2 2014 Migrant Summer Program Language Enrichment for English Language Learners Through Science Themes Students will enhance English language acquisition through academic vocabulary and science based content. In addition, students will review mathematics skills and vocabulary daily. The following areas will be addressed: Listening/Speaking/Reading/Writing Comprehensible Input of English Language Academic Language (CALP) Vocabulary Development Science Concept Awareness Mathematical Skills Sample activities include but are not limited to: Oral Language Development Vocabulary Development Shared Reading with Big Books Foldables Choral Poetry Reading Vocabulary Development Chants and Songs Science Experiments Math Word Problem Solving Skills
3 Migrant Summer Program Dear Parent or Guardian of Grade Your child has been nominated by his/her teacher to be considered to attend the Migrant Summer Program. This is an English language acquisition program focusing on academic language through science themes. Activities include oral language development, vocabulary development, science demonstrations, and math skills. Here is the specific information you need to know as you plan your family s summer activities: If selected, your child will be attending the Migrant Summer Program at Pierson Elementary. (Bus transportation will be provided. Transportation information will be sent home at a later date.) Migrant Summer Program Dates: July 7, 2014 through August 1, 2014 Please see attached calendar for actual dates Migrant Summer Program Times: 8:35 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided at no cost. (Arrive by 8:20 a.m.) Return the attached Emergency Contact/Parent Permission form immediately and you will receive an acceptance letter or a waiting list letter. All students completing the Migrant Summer Program will receive an exciting assortment of books to add to their home library. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please check, sign below, and return to your child s teacher so that another child may participate.
