Look at the pictures of the systems that are shown or represented. Tell your parents one thing you know about each picture. 2. How does the system shown in each picture relate to your life? 3. Here is what you do: Step 1 Discuss the difference between vertebrate and invertebrate animals. Step 2 Go for a walk with your child outside to the park or on a trail in the woods. Vertebrate: Animals with a backbone. Invertebrate: Animals without a backbone. Step 3: Play the animal/insect guessing game. Ask questions that will help you guess the correct animal/ insect: Extension Questions: What are the major differences between vertebrates and invertebrates. Are there more vertebrates or invertebrates in the world? Vertebrates have highly developed nervous systems that allow them to react very quickly to changes in their surroundings. Why is this important? Is your insect smaller than my fingernail? Does your animal live in the water? Did your child like the activity? YES NO Was the activity easy to do?
