AUTOR GUIA: LUZ COLOMBIA DURAN ARIAS HABILIDADES A DESARROLLAR Identificar y traducir los diferentes usos de la terminación ING CONCEPTUALIZACIÓN La terminación ING es un sufijo que se agrega a los verbos para formar nuevas categorías de palabras ( sustantivos, adjetivos,etc ) dando origen, en algunos casos, a nuevos significados. Su traducción a español varía según el uso dado en inglés y va más allá de la comúnmente conocida como ando / endo. Los seis usos más comunes son: 1. COMO GERUNDIO Este uso se presenta en las formas progresivas / continuas de los tiempos ( presente progresivo / continuo, pasado progresivo / continuo ) y su traducción equivale a la terminación ando / endo del español.

2 EJEMPLO 1 I am studying for the exam Estoy estudiando para el examen I was reading when she arrived Estaba leyendo cuando ella llegó 2. COMO SUSTANTIVO Por lo general se usa al inicio de una idea ( cuando el sujeto de la idea es una acción ) y para títulos de texto. En el primer caso, se debe traducir como infinitivo, es decir, verbo terminado en AR, ER, IR. EJEMPLO 2 Running is good for health Correr es bueno para la salud En el caso de títulos se puede traducir como como y lo que indique el verbo así: MAKING A HEALTHY DIET CÓMO HACER UNA DIETA SALUDABLE 3. DESPUES DE PREPOSICIÓN Se debe agregar ING a todo verbo que esté antecedido por una preposición. La traduccción generalmente se hace como infinitivo, es decir, verbo terminado en AR, ER, IR. EJEMPLO 3 Turn off the light before leaving Apague la luz antes de salir 4. DESPUES DE OTRO VERBO Cuando un verbo va seguido de otro verbo en algunos casos el segundo debe llevar ING y puede traducirse como infinitivo, verbo terminado en AR, ER, IR.

En el primer caso, se debe traducir como infinitivo, es decir, verbo terminado en AR, ER, IR.

3 EJEMPLO 4 I like dancing Me gusta bailar 5. COMO ADJETIVO Un verbo con ING puede considerarse adjetivo cuando antecede a un sustantivo y puede traducirse como QUE y lo que indica el verbo o usando las terminaciones españolas ante / ente. EJEMPLO 5 The coming soldiers received a medal Los soldados que llegaron recibieron una medalla I read an interesting book last vacation Leí un libro interesante las pasadas vacaciones 6. PALABRAS CON ING POR NATURALEZA Existen muchas palabras que, sin ser verbos, terminan en ING. En estos casos la traducción no es otra que el significado de la palabra. EJEMPLO 6 I ll see you tomorrow morning Te veré en la mañana The king will travel around the world El rey viajará alrededor del mundo EJERCICIOS PROPUESTOS Analice los siguientes ejemplos de usos de ING y tradúzcalos a español.

A smoothing circuit removes the fluctuations in the DC output of the rectifier
