2 Intermediate Medical Spanish Course Duration & Dates: 10 weeks Oct. 13, 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24 Jan. 5, 12, 26 Instructor: Laura Radchik, Ph.D. Contact Information: Location: CHS Day, and Time: Mondays 3:00-5:00 pm Number of students: 15 Prerequisites: Students should have an intermediate level of written and conversational Spanish, three years of high school or one year of college Spanish, or equivalent. Students must complete a phone interview and written placement test exam prior to being accepted in the course. Students who do not pass the entrance placement exam at least at an intermediate level will be provided a list of resources and may reapply for the second session GOALS AND OBJECTIVES GOAL: To provide medical students with basic communication skills in order to deliver effective, preventive and acute health care to the Spanish speaking community. OBJECTIVES: By the end of this course, the student will develop attitudes that include: Awareness of the impact and importance of the Spanish language in the medical encounter with Hispanic patients Increased desire to learn Spanish and interact with the Hispanic culture. Willingness to adjust the patient interview to effectively treat and diagnose the Spanish speaking patient By the end of this course, the student will develop knowledge in: Utilizing common verbs during the medical encounter Conjugating verbs properly Applying proper use of special verbs: To be and Reflexive Commands Taking Medical History I and II Developing a focused treatment plan for disease oriented Education By Identifying the end of body this course, parts in the Spanish student language will develop the following skills: Identif Obtain ying a patient s a basic medical chief complaint and social using history medical from terms Spanish and speaking dialog patients in a culturally sensitive fashion. Identify some basic Hispanic cultural values and beliefs that could potentially affect clinical decision-making. Communicate effectively with Spanish Speaking patients to elicit focused clinical history Provide patients with an education and treatment plan in Spanish By the end of this course, the student will develop the following skills: Obtain a basic medical and social history from Spanish speaking patients in a culturally sensitive fashion. Identify some basic Hispanic cultural values and beliefs that could potentially affect clinical decision-making. Communicate effectively with Spanish Speaking patients to elicit focused clinical history Provide patients with an education and treatment plan in Spanish

Medina De Chase Attendance Policy Students are required to attend all sessions to pass the class. One excused absence is accepted. An unexcused absence will require the student to submit a paper covering the material from the missed session. You must contact the instructor prior to the missed class to be excused.
