2 FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: BE LIGHT, BE SALT FOR THE WORLD! In today s gospel, Jesus uses two very common images, but at the same time very appropriate for the message he gives to those that listen to him. Many times as cradle Catholics, we become stagnant; people who go to mass and pray, but many times are not moved by the word of God, the receiving of the Body and Blood. Jesus knew that the people he was sending forth were not great in numbers, but He also what He had given them. For us to touch hearts and inspire a world, we had to remember today s words: You are the light of the world! You are the salt of the earth. Everyone knows what salt can do, it can turn a bland dinner into something savory, it can bring out the flavor of what is being cooked. We know the dangers of too much salt, but here we are talking giving enough to be able to digest what the Lord is giving. Many times I hear some comments about us priests, or maybe someone who is ministering; they say He needs or they need to spice things it up. It s not about changing words, the Lord s words are powerful and mighty, but I times if we are not transformed by it, how can we communicate life? We understand the importance of light in our world, without it, we would be incomplete darkness and lost. We also know that until that presence of the Lord in our lives, many preferred some darkness, in order not be seen in our sinful life. The disciples understood that only in the Lord s light can we recover our place before the Father. The light lets us see, lets us be embraced by God s mercy, let's attract others to experience His goodness and walk in hope. Pope Francis, along with many of the current church leaders, has reclaimed a word for us that helps us have a greater direction to the current poverties of the world. He says that we have to go to the peripheries of society to be salt and light for the world. It may sound far for many but truly is nearer than we imagine. Those peripheries are in our cities, in our neighborhoods, but they go unseen because we have blinders on. We get caught with our own needs, trapped by our fears or comfortable way of life, that we forget that we are called to encounter. It is sad to see that even in our Church, we don t know the reality of those in our community who are going without, that are suffering unthinkable situations and are left alone. We forget that we are all to go out and encounter each other, discovering what is truly going on in our neighbor s life. It not about being busybodies as Paul writes in some of His letters; it s about truly caring for all of God s creation. Many changes are occurring in our neighborhood, nation, and the world; that does not mean that the basic needs of humanity have changed. We need to have the basic needs met, we need to feel that we are loved and cared for, not forgotten. Let s start with that simple and profound call to be salt and light for the world. Let us soak up our living in Christ and let it permeate every thought, prayer, word, and action for all. Wherever we may be, may Christ be manifested for all. I ll finish with a quote from Saint Vincent de Paul: If God is at the center our hearts, no words are necessary, your mere presence with touch hearts. In Christ and Saint Vincent, Fr. Astor QUINTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO: SEAN LUZ, SEAN SAL PARA EL MUNDO! En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús utiliza dos imágenes que son muy comunes, pero al mismo tiempo muy apropiadas para el mensaje que da a quienes lo escuchan. Muchas veces como católicos de toda la vida, nos quedamos estancados; personas que van a misa y rezan, pero muchas veces no se conmueven por la palabra de Dios, la recepción del Cuerpo y la Sangre. Jesús sabía que las personas que estaba enviando no eran grandes en número, pero también sabía lo que les había dado. Para que podamos tocar corazones e inspirar un mundo, tuvimos que recordar las palabras de hoy: " Tú eres la luz del mundo!, tú eres la sal de la tierra". Todos saben lo que puede hacer la sal, puede convertir una cena suave en algo salado, puede resaltar el sabor de lo que se está cocinando. Conocemos los peligros de usar demasiada sal, pero aquí estamos hablando de dar lo suficiente para poder digerir lo que el Señor está dando. Muchas veces escucho algunos comentarios sobre nosotros los sacerdotes, o tal vez alguien que está ministrando; Dicen que Él necesita o necesitan darle sazón. No se trata de cambiar las palabras, las palabras del Señor son poderosas, pero a veces, si nosotros mismos no nos transformamos, cómo podemos comunicar la vida? Entendemos la importancia de la luz en nuestro mundo, sin ella estaríamos en completa oscuridad y perdidos. También sabemos que hasta esa presencia del Señor en nuestras vidas, muchos preferían algo de oscuridad, para no ser vistos en nuestra vida pecaminosa. Los discípulos entendieron que solo en la luz del Señor podemos recuperar nuestro lugar ante el Padre. La luz nos permite ver, nos permite ser abrazados por la misericordia de Dios, atraer a otros para experimentar Su bondad y caminar con esperanza. El Papa Francisco, junto con muchos de los líderes actuales de la iglesia, ha retomado una palabra para nosotros que nos ayuda a tener una mayor dirección hacia las actuales pobrezas del mundo. Él dice que tenemos que ir a las periferias de la sociedad para ser sal y luz para el mundo. Puede sonar lejano para muchos, pero realmente está más cerca de lo que imaginamos. Esas periferias están en nuestras ciudades, en nuestros vecindarios, pero no se ven, porque tenemos anteojeras. Quedamos atrapados con nuestras propias necesidades, atrapados por nuestros miedos o nuestra forma de vida cómoda, que olvidamos que estamos llamados a encontrarnos. Es triste ver que incluso en nuestra Iglesia, no sabemos la realidad de aquellos en nuestra comunidad que se van pasando mucha necesidad, que sufren situaciones impensables y se quedan solos. Olvidamos que todos debemos salir a encontrarnos y descubrir lo que realmente está sucediendo en la vida de nuestro vecino. No se trata de estar entremetidos como Pablo escribe en algunas de sus cartas; se trata realmente de cuidar de toda la creación de Dios. Se están produciendo muchos cambios en el vecindario, la nación y el mundo; eso no significa que las necesidades básicas de la humanidad hayan cambiado. Necesitamos que se satisfagan las necesidades básicas, necesitamos sentirnos amados y cuidados, que no se nos olvida. Comencemos con ese llamado simple y profundo a la sal y la luz para el mundo. Empapemos nuestra vida en Cristo y permeemos que permee cada pensamiento, oración, palabra y acción para todos. Dondequiera que estemos, que Cristo se manifieste para todos. 4 Pope Gives Lessons on How to Be Salt of Earth, Light of the World Christians are to be salt of the earth and light of the world, and there s a battery that we can use to never run out of either. The Pope drew inspiration from today s Gospel reading when Jesus tells His disciples You are the salt of the earth, You are the light of the world. Christians, he said, must be salt and light, but never self-serving: salt must add flavor and light must illuminate the other. The Battery The Pope went on to ask, What must a Christian do in order for the salt not to run out so that the oil to light the lamp does not come to an end? The battery a Christian uses to generate light, the Pope explained, is simply prayer. There are many things one can do, many works of charity, many great things for the Church a Catholic University, a college, a hospital you may even be rewarded as a benefactor of the Church with a monument, but if you do not pray, it will be dark and dimly lit, he advised. Prayer, Francis continued, is what lights up Christian life, and is a serious matter. He underscored that our prayers, in all their forms, must come from the heart. Regarding the salt that Christians are called to be, he noted, it becomes salt when it is given to others. This, Francis explained, is another Christian attitude: to give of oneself, to give flavor to the lives of others, to give flavor to many things with the message of the Gospel. How We Don t Run Out of Salt, Light Salt is something to be used, not to keep for oneself, but to give to others. It s curious, he continued, both salt and light are for others, not for oneself: salt does not give flavor to itself; light does not illuminate itself. Of course, you may be wondering how long salt and light can last without running out if we continue to give of ourselves relentlessly, he acknowledged, noting, That s where the power of God comes in, the Pope explained, because the Christian is salt given to us by God during Baptism, it s a gift that never ends. Pope Francis urged Christians to shine brightly and always overcome the temptation to shine light upon themselves. Calling it mirror spirituality, the Argentine Pope said, It is a bad thing to want to shine light onto oneself. Be light to illuminate, be salt to give flavor and to preserve, Pope Francis concluded. Saint Vincent de Paul Vincent prayed that over time his designs and actions would be more and more in harmony with God s desires. He knew that this was the way to a full life. One afternoon in the very last months of his life, Vincent sat with some of his close friends. In the way that people sometimes do when they sense that their time is coming to an end, Vincent began to speak about what mattered to him most. He did not tell of any particularly successful project, or of people whom he had loved and who had loved him, nor even of his precious poor ones. Rather, he talked to his friends about the loving hand of God that had led him, of the interior star that had steered him through all the hectic years. Bent and elderly as he was, he declared, We should give ourselves to God and wear ourselves out for God. (Fr. 7 HOLY SACRAMENTS Infant Baptism Birth to 6 yrs. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. Baptism preparation class for parents and Godparents are held on the Tuesday prior to the Baptism Sunday. Parent(s) or Godparent(s), please bring an original birth certificate of the child to the main office where you can begin the process of registration for this beautiful sacrament. Children s Faith Formation ages 7 yrs. to 15 yrs. (Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation) Our Children s Faith Formation program provides preparation of the Holy Sacraments for children. The program follows Diocesan Guidelines for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children. The hours for children's faith formation classes are Sunday, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M. Pentecost Confirmation 16 yrs. and older Are you baptized and received First Holy Communion but have not completed the Sacrament of Confirmation and you are over the age of 16? Our Confirmation only program begins in January in preparation for Pentecost Confirmation typically at the end of May or beginning of June. Sacrament of Marriage For a marriage ceremony at St. John the Baptist or Our Lady of Good Counsel, arrangements must be made with the Pastor at least 1 year before the wedding date. The diocesan Marriage Preparation or Pre-Cana classes are presented in English, Spanish, Creole, Polish and Italian. The Diocese of Brooklyn have specialized Pre-Cana for Interfaith/Interchurch couples, for couples who are re-marrying and for couples who are convalidating their civil unions. La clase de preparación del bautismo para los padres y padrinos es el martes antes del domingo del bautismo.
