1 P.A.S.S. the Fire Extinguisher A fire on a jobsite can lead to devastating deaths and destruction. When fire extinguishers are used properly, they can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or controlling a fire until additional help arrives. You can put out a small fire quickly by using the P.A.S.S. technique, if you are trained and have quick access to a suitable fire extinguisher. The P.A.S.S. technique breaks down into four simple steps: P. Pull the pin so you can discharge the extinguisher. A. Aim low, at the base of the fire. This is where the fuel source is located. S. Squeeze the lever to release the extinguishing agent. S. Sweep from side to side until all flames are extinguished, or the extinguisher is empty. When a fire occurs, you have seconds to decide whether you should try to fight it with a fire extinguisher or just evacuate. What do you have to know before you try to fight a fire? Fires can increase in size and intensity in seconds, they can block exit routes, and they can create toxic smoke. Before you fight any fire, think about: 1) the fire size, 2) your evacuation route, and 3) the air quality in the vicinity of the fire. You can attempt to fight the fire: if the fire is limited to the original material ignited, if it s contained (in a sink, a bucket, a trash can), if it hasn t spread to other materials, if the flames are not higher than your head, if the fire has not depleted the oxygen in the room, if the temperature in the room has only increased slightly, if there s minimal smoke, visibility is still good, and if you have a clear evacuation route behind you as you fight the fire. Never try to fight a fire: that involves flammable liquids; that has spread; that is inside a wall or ceiling; that cannot be reached from a standing position; that cannot be fought without respiratory protection; that creates so much heat that you can t get within 10 or 15 feet of it; if smoke is filling the room and decreasing visibility; or if fire, heat, or smoke are blocking your evacuation path. If you decide you can fight a fire: Sound the alarm and call the fire department. Make sure you have a clear evacuation path. Select the right type of fire extinguisher. Discharge the extinguisher within its effective range using the P.A.S.S. technique. Back away from an extinguished fire in case it flares up again. Evacuate immediately when the extinguisher is empty regardless of whether the fire is out. SAFETY REMINDER Don t use water to put out electrical or flammable liquid fires. In such cases, water can make matters worse.
