2 A GREAT EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR ALL! TICE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BENEFITS OF DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS Students will be able to develop high levels of proficiency in their first and second language. Learning a second language in the early years facilitates the language acquisition process (Penfield 1989) Research shows that on academic achievement tests, both English proficient students and English Language Learners (ELLs) in Dual Language programs perform as well as or better than their peers who receive all their instruction only in English. Students will be able to demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors needed for a global market place. Tice Elementary School is a growing Professional Learning Community that is committed to high achievement for all students. Tice Elementary School has been selected to implement the Dual Language Program in grades Pre-K and Kindergarten. The Dual language program is a dynamic form of education that develops high levels of academic achievement in two languages (English and Spanish). The program selected is the 50/50 model in which instruction is provided in both languages on a daily basis for the same period of time. Children have the ability to learn and excel in the acquisition of a second language (Krashen, 1982) Participation in early second language acquisition shows positive results in areas of standardized testing (Armstrong & Rogers, 1997)
