4 EE1_2.3 WS #4 A PERSONAL The personal a in Spanish is when a is placed before the direct object in a sentence when it is a person. This is used so that the direct object is not confused with the subject. The a can also be used when the direct object is a pet. The a is not used with the verbs tener, ser, or estar. The personal a and the masculine, singular form of the combine to form al. EX: Juan no conoce a mi padre. No vemos al maestro en la clase. Yo ayudo a mis amigos con su tarea. Carlos es mi primo.
