For regular preterite tense verb conjugations, drop the ending of the infinitive and add the following endings in its place: Drop AR, and add yo é nosotros amos tú aste vosotros asteis él ellos ó aron Drop ER, and add yo í nosotros imos tú iste vosotros isteis él ellos ió ieron Drop IR, and add yo í nosotros imos tú iste vosotros isteis él ellos ió ieron 1 Yes, it s true!!! ER and IR preterite tense verbs share the same endings!! Easy!!

2 2. AR and ER stem-changing verbs do NOT have a stem-change in the preterite!! YEA!!! The e remains an e and the o remains an o. 3. CAR verbs will end in qué in the 1 st person (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation. 4. GAR verbs will end in gué in the 1 st person (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation. 5. ZAR verbs will end in cé in the 1 st person (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation. 6. The preterite is used to express completed past action. The action has a definite beginning and a definite end. 7. Look for clues. Look for adverbial expressions that imply the preterite - completed past action, action with a definite beginning AND a definite end: ayer yesterday;ayer por la mañana yesteday morning;el año pasado last year;el sábado pasado last Saturday; hace una hora an hour ago;la última vez the last time;la primera vez the first time;anoche last night First, write the English equivalent for the Spanish infinitive. Then,conjugate the infinitive into the preterite tense.
