1 Lección 6 - Escenario Antes de salir a cenar, Thomas llama a Roberto García, un amigo y socio en los negocios, que vive en México. Antes de llamar, pide información a la operadora sobre cómo comunicarse directamente desde el hotel. La secretaria de Roberto le dice que él está en una reunión. Thomas deja un mensaje. English Setting Before going out to eat dinner, Thomas calls Roberto García, a friend and business associate, who lives in Mexico. Before calling, he asks the operator for information about how to make the call directly from the hotel. Roberto's secretary tells him that he is in a meeting. Thomas leaves a message.

2 Lesson 6 - Cultural Notes: The way one answers a telephone in Spanish varies from country to country. In some places, the speaker answers with Alo! or Hola, while in other places, one says Bueno? or Dígame? Some people will answer with the number you have reached, or with the name of the family who lives in the house. Until you are familiar with the telephone system in the country you are visiting, you are probably better off making phone calls through the hotel switchboard. In many countries, on e must buy telephone tokens in order to use pay phones, since the phones do not accept coins of any kind. These tokens are usually available at tobacco stands, news stands, and small shops. Thomas is familiar with dining customs in Latin America, and he knows that people in general eat dinner much later there than they do in the United States. it is common to go out for dinner about nine o clock, although this is late by U.S. standards. If you go to a restaurant at 5:30 or 6:00 p.m., it will be practically empty. Here are some useful expressions for talking on the telephone: Spanish Expression Está el señor Smith? De parte de quién? 5 Lesson 6 - Grammar Ser Verses Estar Ser and Estar (To Be) Spanish has two verbs that mean to be: ser and estar. Both are irregular in the present tense indicative, and their forms must be memorized. They are as follows: Ser yo soy tú eres él, ella, usted es nosotros somos vosotros sois ellos, ellas, ustedes son Estar yo estoy tú estás él ella, usted está nosotros estamos vosotros estáis ellos, ellas, ustedes están Notice that many forms of estar have written accents marks. It is very important that you respect the need for these marks or the various forms of the verb estar will be confused with the demonstrative pronouns. For example the word esta means this, but está means it is. Some uses of Ser and Estar: Ser and estar have numerous different uses, and you will learn all of them in time. But some of the most common uses of the verb ser are: to identify a person or a thing; to tell time, the day of the week or the date; to express national origin; to describe a person s characteristics, personality, or traits (young, handsome, rich, good, intelligent, etc.); to tell what someone does for a living. Ser is also used with impersonal expressions (Es importante, It is important; Es interesante, It is interesting, etc.), and with the preposition de to indicate possession (es de Juan, it belongs to Juan). Some of the common uses of the verb estar are: to tell the location or position of a person or thing; to describe someone s emotional or physical condition (tired, happy, well, nervous, etc.).
