3 Conjugation and Translation SER= to be 1st (yo) Soy = I am (nosotros) Somos = We are 2nd 3rd (tú) Eres = you are (informal) Ud. es = you are (formal) Él es = he is Ella es = she is El libro es = it is singular (vosotros) Sois = You all (y all) are (informal) Uds. Son = You all are (formal) Ellos son = They are (males or mixed group) Ellas son = They are (females) Los libros son= they are plural
4 Uses of SER 1. with de to describe origin: Q: De dónde eres? A: Soy de Chicago. I am from Chicago. Q: De dónde es ella? A: Ella es de los Estados Unidos. She is from the United States.
5 Uses of SER 2. with de to describe possession Q: De quién es el currículum? A: El currículum es de Elena. The resumé is Elena s. Q: De quién es el expediente? A: El expediente es de nosotros. That is our file.
6 Uses of SER 3. with de to describe what something is made of. Q: De qué material es la chaqueta? A: La chaqueta es de algodón. The jacket is cotton. Q: De qué son las enchiladas? A: Las enchiladas son de pollo. The enchiladas are chicken.
7 Uses of SER 4. before adjectives to indicate condition that doesn t result from change: nationality, age, physical attributes, personality, religion and color. There are two questions we will learn associated with this type description.
8 A. Descriptions with SER For Physical Attributes and Personality use the following: Masculine: Cómo eres? Soy trabajador y cómico. Feminine: Cómo eres? Soy trabajadora y cómica.
9 Other Examples of Descriptions Q: Cómo es el presidente? A: El presidente es joven. The president is young. (an adjective that indicates age) Q: Cómo es Carlos? A: Carlos es alto y rubio. Carlos is tall and blond. (adjectives that indicate physical attributes) Q: Cómo es Nora? A: Nora es inteligente. Nora is intelligent. (an adjective that indicates a general quality)
10 Other Examples of Descriptions Q: Cómo son tus primos? A: Mis primos son graciosos. My cousins are funny. (general quality) Q: Cómo son las señoras? A: Las señoras son católicas. (religion) The women are Catholic. Q: Cómo es el coche? A: El coche es azul. (color) The car is blue.
11 B. Descriptions with SER For Nationality use the following: Masculine: Q: De qué nacionalidad eres? A: Soy español. I am Spanish. Feminine: Q: De qué nacionalidad eres? A: Soy española. I am Spanish.
12 Other Examples of Nationality Q: De qué nacionalidad es tu padre? A: Mi padre es panameño. My father is Panamanian. Q: De qué nacionalidad es Carlos? A: Carlos es peruano. Carlos is Peruvian. Q: De qué nacionalidad es Nora? A: Nora es estadounidense. Nora is a U.S. citizen. (there is no true translation for this word. We use American but when you think about that term, isn t very general? How many Americas are there?)
