Modales. Habilidad. Usamos can para expresar habilidad en el presente: I can drive a car puedo conducir un coche. Usamos could para expresar habilidad en el pasado I could read when I was 5 podía leer cuando tenía 5 años. I must write a letter Desbo escribir una carta. Por tanto I must será una obligación que me impongo a mí mismo - Have to: Se usa para expresar también para obligación, pero en este caso es impuesta por el exterior del hablante: You have to wear an uniform Tienes que llevar uniforme. Prohibición Usamos mustn t, can t o couldn t (en pasado) Mustn t You mustn t talk in class No debes hablar en clase Can t You can t talk in class No puedes hablar en clase. Couldn t You couldn t read with 2 years No podías hablar con 2 años Ausencia de obligación: Para expresar ausencia de obligación en inglés usamos:
- Don t have to Ausencia de obligación externa I don t have to go to school on Saturdays. - Needn t Ausencia de obligación del hablante I needn t bring my books. I didn t need to get up early, but I wasn t tired, so I did. Permiso Para pedir permiso usamos can, could, may, might May es más formal mientras que can es más informal. Ejemplo: you can use my pone puedes usar mi teléfono. You may use my phone podrías usar mi teléfono. También usamos to be allowed to: Passengers aren t allowed to smoke no se permite fumar a los pasajeros. Para el pasado usamos could / was o were allowed to. Para permiso en general podemos utilizar ambas formas (could o was/were allowed to) pero cuando la acción está permitida y realizada usamos was/were allowed to. Posibilidad. MAY / MIGHT / CAN May expresa una probabilidad mayor de que algo ocurra, mientras que con might, la probabilidad es más remota. Ejemplos: There is someone in the door. It may be Sarah. Ejemplo: You can ski because there is enough snow today. Puedes esquiar porque hoy hay suficiente nieve. También puede significar posibilidad ocasional. Por ejemplo: Healess can be dangerous El sarampión puede ser peligroso.
May / might \ could + be + verbo acabado en ing Se utiliza para indicar que quizás alguien este haciendo algo en el momento. They may be having dinner Puede que estén cenando. May / might \ could + have + past participle: Sirve para mostrar una posibilidad en el pasado: Where was Sally last night? She might have been at home Dónde estuvo Sally la pasada noche? Podría haber estado en casa. Should / ought to (esto iría en consejo, pero lo explico aquí) Se usa para: Dar consejo: You should see a doctor. Deberías ver al médico. Petición de consejo u opinión: Should I stay or should I go? Debería quedarme o debería ir? Predicción con seguridad (más segura que con will): He s studying hard. He should pass the exam. I wonder why they re so late. They should have arrived long ago. Shouldn t / ought not to have done: Se utiliza para expresar algo que has hecho, pero que no debiste haberlo hecho. He has been running for four hours; he must be tired. You have just had lunch. You can t be hungry yet.
I wonder why Jane hasn t answered my letter. She may be ill. I ll take an umbrella as it might rain Cogeré un paraguas ya que podría llover. Must/may/might/can t + be + V. Ing He may be studying a lot because I haven t seen him for days. Must/may/might/can t + infinitivo perfecto (have done) / infinitivo perfecto continuo (have been doing) Phil hasn t arrived yet. He may have missed the train. You can t have been studying all night No puedes haber estado estudiando toda la noche. Consejo. Should / ought to / must Must expresa un consejo con más énfasis: You should study harder deberías estudiar más Doctor: You must stop smoking Doctor: Debes dejar de fumar Had better: se usa para una recomendación más fuerte en una situación particular You had better take an umbrella Deberías coger mejor un paraguas. To be supposed to: Sirve para hablar sobre lo que se espera que haga (disposición, norma o deber). You re supposed to start work at 8:00. I ve missed my bus, what shall I do? May as well significa mas vale que We may as well go home más vale que vayamos a casa. You might like to join us (una sugerencia muy educada) podría gustarle acompañarnos. I d rather + forma base (preferiría) I d rather study English preferiría estudiar inglés.
I d rather + sujeto + pasado simple I d rather he studied English Preferiría que él estudiara inglés.
