4 TO THE STUDENT: Your workbook, Cuaderno para hispanohablantes, is similar to Cuaderno: Práctica para todos, but it has been especially designed for you as a student with some degree of experience with Spanish. The leveled vocabulary and grammar activities cover the material taught and practiced in each lesson of your textbook. In each lesson, two pages of additional vocabulary and grammar (which are not found in the Cuaderno) present more advanced concepts such as complex grammar, spelling difficulties, and advanced vocabulary. Other workbook pages use the vocabulary and grammar from the lesson to target a specific skill such as listening, reading or writing. These are the sections in the Cuaderno para hispanohablantes for each lesson: Vocabulario Has two to three activities that practice the vocabulary taught in that lesson. Vocabulario adicional Provides additional vocabulary lessons relevant to you as a heritage learner. Gramática Follows the same pattern as the Vocabulario section and reinforce the grammar points taught in each lesson. Gramática adicional Teaches an advanced grammar concept, such as punctuation, verb forms, and more complex sentence structures. Integración: Hablar This page includes a single activity and is not leveled. It asks you to respond orally to a single question, based on information that you will receive. The information comes from two sources. One is a written source and the other is a short audio. You must comprehend the information coming from both sources and put it together in order to answer the question. The question can usually be answered in a few sentences. Integración: Escribir This page is like the previous one, except that you will provide your answer in written form. Lectura Contains short readings comprehension activities to practice your understanding of written Spanish. Escritura In this section you are asked to write a short composition. There is a pre-writing activity to help you prepare your ideas and a rubric to check how well you did. Cultura Focuses on the cultural information found throughout each lesson. Comparación cultural In lesson 2: non-leveled pages provide writing support for the activities in the student text. v

5 TO THE TEACHER: Cuaderno para hispanohablantes is a leveled workbook which addresses the special needs of heritage students. It is similar to Cuaderno: Práctica para todos in that it provides additional practice, but it requires that students handle Spanish at a higher level than their non-hispanic classmates. Additionally, two pages of additional vocabulary and grammar, which are not found in the Cuaderno, present more advanced concepts such as complex grammar, spelling difficulties, and advanced vocabulary. As an additional study tool, the workbook contains bookmarks that include the lesson vocabulary list and abbreviated grammar explanations. The leveled practice pages labeled A, B, or C are written at three different levels of difficulty, from easiest (A) to most challenging (C). The A page is for students who recognize spoken Spanish but have no experience reading or writing it The B page assumes that students speak and understand Spanish The C page is for those who have had some formal training in Spanish The following sections are included in Cuaderno para hispanohablantes for each lesson: Vocabulario Contains three activities that practice the lesson vocabulary Vocabulario adicional Provides vocabulary lessons relevant to heritage learners Gramática Two sections that follow the same pattern as the Vocabulario section and target the specific grammar points taught in the lesson.
