You will now learn how to use the subjunctive with verbs and expressions of will and influence - LOS VERBOS DE DESEO E INFLUENCIA. Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Verbs of will and influence are often used when someone wants to affect the actions or behavior of other people. Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Atención! In English, constructions using the infinitive, such as I want you to go, are often used with verbs or expressions of will or influence. This is not the case in Spanish, where the subjunctive would be used in a subordinate clause. Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

In Noun Clauses, the Subjunctive does not just happen, it is caused: The cause for the subjunctive is in the main clause (la cláusula principal). The subjunctive is in the subordinate clause (la cláusula subordinada). Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Ejemplos... Yo quiero que tú vayas La maestra pide que nosotros trabajemos Yo insisto en que tú me llames Más ejemplos? Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

La puerta puerta al subjuntivo: Para entrar en la puerta, se necesitan unas llaves importantes: 1. un verbo especial especial 2. dos cláusulas 3. dos sujetos diferentes 4. la preposición QUE Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Cláusula Principal Indicativo Verbo especial + QUE + Cláusula Subordinada Sujeto diferente Subjuntivo Yo necesito QUE mis estudiantes hagan la tarea Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

When the main clause contains an expression of will or influence, the subjunctive is required in the subordinate clause, provided that the two clauses have different subjects. Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Las expresiones impersonales, por ejemplo es necesario que, es importante que, es mejor que, and es urgente que, could also considered expressions of will or influence. Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Los verbos especiales son los verbos de DESEO E INFLUENCIA. Aquí está una lista con algunos de estos verbos: Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Indirect object pronouns (me, te, le, nos, os, les) are often used with the verbs aconsejar, importar, mandar, pedir, prohibir, recomendar, rogar, and sugerir. Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS Me = refers to me Nos us Te = refers to you os you plural Le him, her, UD Les you plural, them OJO! 1 TE sugiero que ( I suggest that YOU ) 2. NOS piden que ( they are asking US to ) 3. Su tía LES manda que ( Their aunt is ordering THEM..) to ) Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Note that all the forms of prohibir in the present tense carry a written accent, except for the nosotros/as form: prohíbo, prohíbes, prohíbe, prohibimos, prohibís, prohíben. Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

The infinitive is used with words or expressions of will and influence, if there is no change of subject in the sentence. Copyright 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved

Completa cada oración con la forma correcta del verbo entre paréntesis. 1. Te sugiero que vayas (ir) con ella al supermercado. 2. Él necesita que yo le (prestar) dinero. 3.
