Irregular Preterite There are several irregular verbs in the preterite. In this presentation, we ll take a look at the most important ones.
Can you guess? Here are some irregular preterite forms. Can you guess what the present verb form might be? yo vine él estuvo nosotros trajimos ellos fueron
Cómo te salió? vine > vengo estuvo > está trajimos > traemos fueron > van / son Some irregular preterite forms resemble their present forms, while others do not.
Bases How do you learn the irregulars? Learn them by base forms first. Start with these five: estar > estuv- tener > tuv- venir > vin- poder > pud- saber > sup-
Okay, now what? estar > estuv- yo estuve tú estuviste él estuvo nosotros estuvimos ellos estuvieron Hey, no accent marks!
Try one yourself! tener > tuv- yo tuv tú tuv él tuv nosotros tuv ellos tuv
How d you do? tener > tuv- yo tuve tú tuviste él tuvo nosotros tuvimos ellos tuvieron
Here s another for good measure. venir > vin- yo vin tú vin él vin nosotros vin ellos vin
How d you do? venir > vin- yo vine tú viniste él vino nosotros vinimos ellos vinieron
Two more ending in S- Here are two more irregular preterite forms that both happen to end in s. poner > pus- querer > quis- Any guesses as to what their forms are?
Muy bien! poner > pus- yo puse tú pusiste él puso nosotros pusimos ellos pusieron querer > quis- yo quise tú quisiste él quiso nosotros quisimos ellos quisieron
Two more ending in J- Two more irregular preterite forms that happen to end in j. traer > traj- decir > dij-
Why are these special? traer > traj- yo traje, tú trajiste, él trajo, nosotros trajimos **ellos trajeron** decir > dij- yo dije, tú dijiste, él dijo, nosotros dijimos **ellos dijeron** The ending for the ellos form is eron (without the i-)
Hacer hacer > hic- yo hice tú hiciste **él hizo** nosotros hicimos ellos hicieron It s like the other irregular preterites, except it makes a spelling change in the él form: hic- > hiz-
How about a two-for-one? ser > fu- = ir > fu- yo fui tú fuiste él fue nosotros fuimos ellos fueron It s the same form for both verbs, and the endings are not identical to the other irregular preterite verbs.
Two kind of irregulars dar > d- / ver > v- yo di / yo vi tú diste / tú viste él dio / él vio nosotros dimos / vimos ellos dieron / vieron We saw ver in the previous presentation; dar works in the same way, even though it s an ar verb.
Wow! That s a lot to digest! Yes, it is. So let s practice.
