2 Welcome to Lesson B of Story Time for Spanish Story Time is a program designed for students who have already taken high school or college courses or students who have completed other language programs. The alphabetical lessons, starting with Lesson A, are meant to be practice for beginners of the Spanish Language. If you are familiar with this language, skip over to Lesson 1. 3 Let s continue building our story about a man named John who is visiting a Spanish speaking country. He sees a woman and wants to speak with her. He says, Excuse me ma am Con permiso señora If he approached a young woman, he would address her as, Miss Señorita Se ño ri ta Seño rita John says, Excuse me miss Con permiso señorita Con permiso señorita He would like to know if she understands English, he asks, Do you understand? Usted entiende? In Spanish, the word you has many forms. We learned the formal word, Usted which is used when speaking to a single person. Normally, this would be used to address strangers, people much older than you, in a professional setting, or in formal situations. The informal word is, Tú. This would normally be used when speaking to friends or acquaintances. But in reality, many people, depending on their culture, would use Tú with anyone they encounter. This is why it is equally important to learn how to use both Tú and Usted since a stranger would address you in either form. One last note, using words like, miss mister and ma am is considered formal, therefore you cannot use the Tú form of you Let s go back to the short story. John asks the woman, Do you understand? Usted entiende? The informal version is: Tú entiendes? Notice the word, entiendes

4 This is the conjugated version of Entender when addressing someone as Tú From now on, when speaking to a single person, we shall use both forms, both the formal and the informal. John says to the young lady, Excuse me, Miss Con permiso, señorita Do you understand English? Usted entiende inglés? Tú entiendes inglés? Another reminder, the word Tú would never be used with someone if you address them as, Señor Señorita or Señora We will use both for practice only as it is very likely that someone may address you with Tú John says, Excuse me miss Con permiso señorita Do you understand English? Usted entiende inglés? Tú entiendes inglés? Do you speak English? Usted habla inglés? Tú hablas inglés? Here, the word hablas is the Tú form of the verb Hablar Do you speak English? Usted habla inglés? Tú hablas inglés?

Spanish español es pa ñol español Actually, the word Spanish Español is a family of different languages from Spain. The specific language that you are learning, which is used in Latin America, is Castilian Castellano Cas te lla no Castellano

7 Latin Americans refer to the language Castellano when taking grammar courses. But use Español for everyday usage. In Spain, however, it would be wise to use Castellano as you may encounter someone who speaks one of the other Spanish languages. Back to the story, the lady says And you, sir? Y usted, señor? Y tú? Do you understand Spanish? Usted entiende español? Tú entiendes español? Do you speak Spanish? Usted habla español? Tú hablas español? And you, sir? Y usted, señor? Y tú? Do you understand Spanish?
