Learning goals: Gustar, por qué? and porque Use of preposition de

1. Use the verb gustar to say what people like. If the thing they like is singular, use gusta. If it's plural, use gustan. Use qué? with gusta to ask what someone likes. Te gusta la pizza? Do you like pizza? Sí, y me gustan las verduras. Yes, and I like vegetables. Qué te gusta? What do you like? Me gustan los carros. I like cars.
Expressing likes and dislikes in Spanish is challenging for English speakers, because Spanish does not have a verb which can literally translate as to like. Instead, you must use the verb gustar / goo-stahrr, which means to be pleasing to someone.
In English, the following sentences are correct: I like the room We like the books. Examine the same sentences more closely. I like the room. I = subject of sentence like = verb the room = direct object We like the books. We = subject of sentence like = verb the books = direct object
In English, it is correct to construct a sentence that has the subject liking a direct object. In Spanish, this never occurs. In Spanish, a different construction is used. English... I like the room. Spanish... The room is pleasing to me. English... We like the books. Spanish... The books are pleasing to us.
The first thing you need to notice is that both versions really mean the same thing. They are merely different expressions of the same idea. Idea... My feelings with regard to the book are positive. English Way... I like the book. Spanish Way... The book is pleasing to me..
The second thing to notice is that in English, the subject of the sentence is the person (I, we). In Spanish the subject of the sentence is the object (room, books). English Way I like the room. Subject: I Spanish Way The room is pleasing to me. Subject: The room
Finally notice that while the English sentence has a direct object, the Spanish sentence has an indirect object. English Way I like the room. room = Direct Object Spanish Way The room is pleasing to me. me = Indirect Object
Gustar does not literally mean to like, but rather to be pleasing. Me gusta = It is pleasing to me. To me are pleasing the apples Me gustan las manzanas
Let s study the following example: Me gustan los libros. Literal Translation To me are pleasing the books... Actual Translation... I like the books.
2. Put one of these pronouns (indirect object pronouns) before gustar to say who likes something. me gusta(n) I like te gusta(n) le gusta(n) you (tú) like you (usted)like, he, she, it likes nos gusta(n) we like os gusta(n) les gusta(n) you (vosotros) like you (ustedes) like, they like Notice that le can stand for you (usted), he, she or it; and les can stand for you (ustedes) or they In Spanish, object pronouns such as you, me, him, and her, always go before the conjugated verb. In English, object pronouns always go after the verb.

3. To ask who is being talked about, use a quién or a quiénes. To clarify who is being talked about, use a + name(s). A quién le gusta la comida mexicana? Who likes mexican food? A Juan le gusta la comida mexicana. Juan likes mexican food. A quiénes les gusta la comida mexicana? Who likes mexican food? A Juan y a Sara les gusta la comida mexicana Juan and Sara like mexican food.
4. Put the word no before the pronoun to say don t or doesn t. Te gusta la pizza? Do you like pizza? No, no me gusta la pizza No, I don t like pizza. 5. To ask why, use Por qué? Answer with porque (because) Por qué te gusta el helado? Why do you like ice cream? Me gusta porque es delicioso I like it because it s delicous.
Gustar does not literally mean to like, but rather to be pleasing. Me gusta = It is pleasing to me. If the thing they like is singular, use gusta. If it's plural, use gustan The definite articles el, la, los, and las are always used when talking abouth things you like or dislike. Use indirect object pronouns me, te, le, nos, os, les to indicate to whom something (activity or thing) is pleasing. Place the indirect object pronoun immediately before the conjugated form of gustar (gusta or gustan) To say that someone does not like something, no is used directly before the indirect object pronoun. When you want to really emphasize or identify the person that you are talking about, add a + noun/pronoun. To ask why, use Por qué? Answer with porque (because)
A + noun/name(s)/pronoun + IOP + form of gustar + what someone likes A Noun/name/ pronoun indirect object pronoun gustar A Adela le gusta la pizza What someone likes A ustedes les gustan las fiestas A Maria y a Pedro les gusta la comida china A A A A A A A la profesora nosotros ti mí usted teresa ellos le gustan los libros nos gustan las películas te gustan la películas me gusta a clase de español le gustan las papas fritas le gustan los vegetales les gusta la música rock

In the plural, an apostrophe alone ( ) is added after the s ending of most plural nouns. Timmy s books are in his backpack. My friend s classes are wonderful. The teachers lounge is empty.
