Diabetes in Americans Did you know that approximately 18.2 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with diabetes and another one-third have this illness but are unaware? Many of us know someone who has diabetes. Maybe it s your parents, grandparents, aunt, uncle, brother, sister or even a close friend. It is extremely important to learn more about this very common illness. What is diabetes? Diabetes, commonly referred to as sugar diabetes, means that your blood sugar is too high. Your blood always has some sugar (glucose) in it because the body needs sugar (glucose) for energy to keep you going. But too much sugar (blood glucose) in the blood can cause serious damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart. There is much you can do to delay, prevent, and/or manage this disease.
What are the signs and symptoms of diabetes? Diabetes is a silent disease. Increased sugar in the blood and in the urine leads to the classic symptoms of diabetes, which include: Frequent Urination Increased Thirst Increased Appetite Blurred Vision Weight Loss Should I be tested for diabetes? Many Americans have a higher chance of getting diabetes and should ask their doctor if they need to be tested for diabetes. These include people who: are age 45 and older are overweight have a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes have high blood pressure (above 130/80) have high cholesterol and high levels of blood fats have had diabetes when pregnant or gave birth to a large baby (over 9 pounds) are active less than three times a week. are Hispanic, African American, Asian American, Native American or a Pacific Islander. Source: American Diabetes Association
What steps will help to reduce my risk? There are many ways to delay, prevent, and/or manage diabetes with healthy eating and physical activities by: reducing food portion sizes adding more physical activity to your daily routine making healthy food choices nurturing your mind, body, and soul learning more about diabetes
No one should have to fight diabetes alone. If you or someone you love is at risk for diabetes or has any of the warning signs, visit or your doctor and get tested today.
