Colón salió de Puerto de Palos navegando hacia el oeste por el Océano Atlántico. Su destino era la actual India. Era un viaje extraordinario ya que Colón intentaba llegar al este navegando al oeste. Muchos lo consideraban loco porque en esa época se creía que el mundo era plano, no redondo. Antes de dejar España el capitán había decidido llevar dos cuentas sobre las distancias viajadas: una secreta o verdadera, solo para él, y otra pública o falsa, en la que contaría la distancia de menos, así los hombres no tendrían miedo de estar tan lejos de su patria. Sin embargo, el seis de octubre, después de haber navegado más de dos meses y aún no había signos de tierra, se produjo el primer motín entre los marineros de la Santa María. Esta vez, los hermanos Pinzón ayudaron a Colón a calmar la rebellión, pero tres noches más tarde el miedo se extendió a todos y hubo otro motín. Acordaron navegar tres días más y entonces si no encontraban tierra, la expedición regresaría a España. No fue necesario, pues la mañana del doce de octubre el marinero Rodrigo de Triana dio el grito esperado, Tierra! Colón había llegado a la isla de Guanahaní a la cual le pusieron el nombre San Salvador y tomaron posesión de esa tierra en nombre de los Reyes Católicos. Hasta su muerte, Colón no supo que no era la India adonde había llegado, sino a un nuevo continente que abrió paso al Nuevo Mundo.
