Este primer acuerdo era el resultado de muchos encuentros preliminares y de un periodo intenso de prenegociación en el exterior, especialmente en La Habana, donde el gobierno cubano, igual que durante los gobiernos de Álvaro Uribe y de Andrés Pastrana, de manera generosa había decidido prestar su territorio para contribuir a que los colombianos pudiéramos construir las fórmulas que permitieran terminar nuestro largo y vetusto conflicto interno armado. De manera simultánea, las directivas de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, lideradas por su rector, tomaron la decisión de que se creara un Centro de Pensamiento y Seguimiento al Diálogo de Paz (CPSDP), y me encomendaron la tarea de organizarlo y ponerlo en marcha. Convocamos a más de una treintena de profesores, y la inmensa mayoría respondió positivamente; así pudimos poner a andar este espacio de convergencia institucional que contribuyera al buen éxito de las conversaciones que se iniciaban con las FARC y las que seguramente luego se concretarían con el ELN.
