El Tiempo Futuro Forms and Uses of the Future Tense in Spanish

In Spanish, you already know several ways to express future events without actually using a new tense! Present indicative when we want to imply that we are certain the action will occur. Llegan a la costa mañana. They arrive at the coast tomorrow.

Now we have a new tense we can use: Future tense when we want to express an action that WILL, MIGHT, or SHALL occur; more emphatic than ir+a+infinitive. Llegarán a la costa mañana. They will arrive at the coast tomorrow.

Forms of the future tense Almost all verbs are formed by adding -é, -ás, -á, -emos, and -án to the infinitive: hablar deber abrir yo hablar é deber é abrir é tú hablar ás deber ás abrir ás él/ella/ud. hablar á deber á abrir á Nosotros/as hablar emos deber emos abrir emos Ellos/ellas/Uds. hablar án deber án abrir án

Ejemplos Will you be at the Spanish restaurant on Wednesday? Estarás en el restaurante español el miércoles? I will run with you at 4:00 in the afternoon. Correré contigo a las 4:00 de la tarde. We will share our presentations in two weeks. Compartiremos nuestras presentaciones en dos semanas.

Práctica - translate to Spanish You will have a degree in English We will go I will work They will eat You all will earn My salary will raise I will apply We will attend college

Verbs with Irregular Future Stems: to fit there is to be able to to want to know Some Spanish verbs drop the -e of the infinitive ending: cab e r Infinitive Stem Future caber cabr- cabré, cabrás, cabrá.. haber habr- habrá (habré,habrás.. poder podr- podré, podrás, podrá querer querr- querré, querrás, saber sabr- sabré, sabrás, sabrá

Verbs with Irregular Future Stems: Others replace the -e or -i of the infinitive ending with -d. pon e d r to put to leave to have to be worth to come Infinitive Stem Future poner pondr- pondré, pondrás, pondrá, salir saldr- saldré, saldrás, saldrá,.. tener tendr- tendré, tendrás, tendrá, valer valdr- valdré, valdrás, valdrá, venir vendr- vendré, vendrás, vendrá,

Verbs with Irregular Future Stems: And a couple are just different! They lose the -c and the -e. to say/tell to do/make Infinitive Stem Future decir dir- diré, dirás, dirá, hacer har- haré, harás, hará,..

Ejemplos Cuándo le dirás a ella que la amas? When will you tell her you love her? Tendré que cambiar mi especialización I ll have to change my major. Habrá mucha gente en el concierto esta noche. There will be a lot of people at the concert tonight.

Práctica 1. It will not fit in my backpack 2. We will come to the party 3. They will have to arrive early 4. I will leave at You will do the homework every night 6. In 3 years, I will know a lot of Spanish 7. There will be wifi in every store. 8. We will be able to visit Asia in 4 hours.

The future tense itself has a few meanings expressing actions and conditions that WILL happen indicating something MIGHT happen or might be the case. Giving or stating a commandment about the future that SHALL happen

Probability and the Future Tense The Spanish future tense sometimes indicates probability. In such cases, English would use probably, wonder, bet, must be, may, and might. -- Dónde estará Daniel? Where might Daniel be? --No sé. Estará en la tienda. I don t know. He is probably (or might be) in the store.

Commands and the Future Tense Giving solemn commands is another way to use the future tense, though it is not very common. Example: The Ten Commandments (from the Bible) 1º Amarás a Dios sobre todas las cosas. 2º No tomarás el Nombre de Dios en vano. 3º Santificarás el Día del Señor. 4º Honrarás a tu padre y a tu madre. 5º No matarás. 6º No cometerás actos impuros. 7º No robarás. 8º No dirás falso testimonio ni mentirás. 9º No consentirás pensamientos ni deseos impuros. 10º No codiciarás los bienes ajenos.

Exit Ticket 1. Conjugate the verb "comer" in the future tense. 2. Name one verb that is irregular in future tense and tell me how it is irregular. 3. How is future similar and different from other tenses you know? 16
