1 Securing Equipment on the Jobsite It s likely that you ve worked on a jobsite that has lost materials, tools, and expensive equipment to theft and vandalism. When jobsite security isn t tight and equipment is left unattended at night or over the weekend, there is a higher likelihood of thefts. These incidents can disrupt work; create job delays; increase the costs of building, insurance, and payroll; and can increase actual work for everyone on the jobsite. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) studied 10,925 reports of equipment theft that were submitted in They found that although thefts occurred in every state, the numbers from four states accounted for 37% of the total thefts. The top four states for equipment theft in 2012 were: Texas, North Carolina, Florida, and California. It s not surprising that the states with the most construction activity also had the most thefts. The types of equipment stolen are also significant. Thieves are most likely to steal: skid steers, backhoes, wheel loaders, excavators, and forklifts. These machines are all pretty easy to move, and can be loaded onto a relatively small trailer. According to the findings of the NICB, the newer a piece of equipment is, the more likely it is that someone will steal it. We can prevent theft from the jobsite by taking some simple precautions but, depending on location, it may not be enough to just lock the gangbox before you leave work at the end of the day. Here are some ways you can deter thieves after hours: Close and lock all gates and access points at the end of the day. Insurance may not cover theft from jobsites that aren t fenced. Know how to activate locks and/or alarms on doors, windows, and gates. Report damaged lights and surveillance cameras, gaps in fences, and doors that won t lock. Store equipment, material, and tool trailers in areas that are well lit and visible from the street. Thieves don t like to steal from places that are easily seen by security guards and the police. Remove the keys from all mobile equipment at the end of every day. Keep those keys in a secure place. Make equipment harder to steal by surrounding it with objects that are difficult to move. Use mechanical lockout devices to immobilize equipment. Lock oil and gas tank caps. Avoid Friday deliveries if the materials will sit around, especially outside, over the weekend. Report unusual or suspicious activity. SAFETY REMINDER Don t take tools from work, even to use on another job, unless you have written permission from your supervisor.
