1 THE PAST: PAST SIMPLE AND PAST CONTINUOUS THE PAST SIMPLE We use the past simple to talk about actions that start and finish in the past and we say when it happens in the past. Look at this example. Yesterday I talked to John about the party on Saturday. (when) The past simple has two forms: REGULAR and IRREGULAR. REGULAR FORM: We add ED to the infinitive --to of the verb. Walk Walked Open Opened Call Called SPELLING RULES If the verb ends in E we only add a D. Like Liked Close Closed Live Lived If the verb ends in CVC (Consonant + Vowel + Consonant) we double the last consonant and add ED. Stop Stopped Travel Travelled Admit Admitted o EXCEPT one-syllable verbs that end in w, y or x (we don t double the last consonant) Bow Bowed Mix Mixed Play Played o EXCEPT if the last syllable is not stressed. Visit Visited If the verb ends in Consonant + y we change the y for i and add ed. Worry Worried Study Studied Copy Copied
2 IRREGULAR FORM: Many verbs in English have an irregular form in the past simple. Unfortunately, you have to learn them. Here are some of the most common verbs. INFINITIVE PAST SIMPLE INFINITIVE PAST SIMPLE Be Was / Were Meet Met (I / he / she / it was // you / we / they were) Pay Paid Go Went Put Put Do Did Read Read Have Had (pronounce the past simple like the color red ) Get Got Run Ran Give Gave Say Said Begin Began (you pronounce the past simple/ sed / ) Break Broke See Saw Buy Bought (pronounce it with a long o sound /sɔː/ ) (pronounce it with a long o sound /bɔːt/ ) Send Sent Eat Ate Sit Sat (you can pronounce it / et / or / eit / ) Sleep Slept Feel Felt Speak Spoke Find Found Steal Stole Fly Flew Take Took (pronounce it with a long u sound / flu: / ) Tell Told Know Knew Think Thought Hear Leave Heard Left (pronounce it with a long o sound /zɔːt/ ) Wake up Woke up Make Made Win Won Write Wrote
3 FOR QUESTIONS AND NEGATIVE FORMS we always use the auxiliary DID and the infinitive of the verb. I didn t go to the cinema yesterday. Did you go to the cinema yesterday? THE PAST CONTINUOUS We use the past continuous to talk about actions that start and finish in the past and were in progress for some time in the past. Look at this example. Yesterday I was watching TV in the evening. We FORM the past continuous like this: PAST SIMPLE OF THE VERB TO BE + VERB + ING SPELLING OF VERB + --ING If the verb ends in E we remove the E and add ING. Like Liking Close Closing Live Living o EXCEPT verbs that end in --EE where we keep the --EE and add --ING. Agree Agreeing See Seeing Flee Fleeing o EXCEPT verbs that end in --IE where we change --IE to --Y and add --ING. Die Dying Lie Lying Tie Tying If the verb ends in Vowel + Consonant, we double the last consonant and add ING. Stop Stopping Travel Travelling Admit Admitting o EXCEPT verbs that end in w, y or x (we don t double the last consonant) Bow Bowing Mix Mixing Destroy Destroying o EXCEPT if the last syllable is not stressed. Visit Visiting Offer Offering Answer Answering
4 FOR QUESTIONS AND NEGATIVE FORMS we always use the auxiliary TO BE and verb + --ING. I wasn t watching the TV all night. They weren t talking to John at the cinema. Was she looking at me before? Were you speaking in English at the conference last month? NOW GO TO THE NEXT PAGE AND COMPLETE THE PRACTICE EXERCISE
